Letting the opp transition.

So often when I'm grappling i'll be denying transitions and holding positions, but sometimes I'll actually let the opp get a certain transition, in order to achieve a different position.

Some examples I use frequently:

Often I'll hold Side Control until they try to transition to Back Side, then give them the transitions so I can get to Back Side Control.

I use North South as a stall out position, and will often give them a transition from there, where they just roll over, just so I can get to sprawl. I'll use this frequently to get in position for the Sprawl->Stand Up reversal Guillotine which is only 2 gates.

From back side i like to get there head red, then deny transitions until they try to stand up into Back Clinch. Let them have the transition so we end up in a standing Back Clinch. From there you can immediately throw a suplex and get a KO.

Does anyone else use techniques like this as part of their game?

I do that with subs, sometimes it works and sometimes it backfires.

A lot of subs give you great position after a few gates.

I do this when someone is having alot of top control on me.

Re: Letting the opp transition.

Yeah i usually let them get to sprawl and see if they want to stand up, so I can take them down again for better ground position.

I also let them stand up after I take all their stamina way. It makes it much easier to setup them up for the finish, whether it be from strikes or tai clinch on the fence.

I only do it really if I want a easy submission win like you do with the guillotine reversal.

Re: Letting the opp transition.

I let them get to half guard in hopes they try to take my back so I can get the leg lock.

Re: Letting the opp transition.

I have let people transition from half guard to mount, denying their side control to initiate the heel hook to potentially either sub them or escape their GnP. I believe it is only the first 2 gates that turn into a escape on a failed sub attempt for the full mount bottom heel hook.
