The game difficulty has always been tuned by some kind of slider, the only difference is that now we can see what's being changed (which is an improvement). Makes it much easier to fine tune the difficulty exactly how you like it.
Changing this has nothing to do with players or the ball clipping through each other. That probably has something to with the new "animation system" they put in this year that allowed for smoother animation transitions. I think it's an improvement over 2k16, personally, and we're not getting rid of clipping in games anytime soon. They can't get rid of it in games where it seems easy to, let alone a game where you have 10 dudes bumping into each other constantly.
As long as it doesn't affect the outcome of the game, it doesn't bother me, and most of the time, it doesn't. When I played NHL 16, every other game had a goal scored where the puck went through the goalie. Turned me off hockey games a little hehe
