NHL 19 Revamped Rosters - Top Player Ratings

As was discussed within the EA top 50 player ratings, I took a look at re-rating players.

For forwards, I based my ratings on stats from the 2017-18 season, Corsi ratings from the 2017-18 season, and stats from the 2016-17 season. I rated players for each of those 3 categories separately, and then took a weighted average of the 3 ratings.

The weight of each rating was:
Stats from 2017-18 season = 40%
Corsi ratings from 2017-18 season = 25%
Stats from 2016-17 season = 35%

I had to make a few adjustments here and there to get some players to where I thought they should be.

Here are my updated top forwards:

1. Connor McDavid - 95 OVR
2. Evgeni Malkin - 93 OVR
3. Sidney Crosby - 93 OVR
4. Nikita Kucherov - 92 OVR
5. Brad Marchand - 92 OVR
6. Alex Ovechkin - 91 OVR
7. Steven Stamkos - 90 OVR
8. Nathan MacKinnon - 90 OVR
9. Taylor Hall - 90 OVR
10. Claude Giroux - 90 OVR
11. Ryan Getzlaf - 89 OVR
12. Mark Scheifele - 89 OVR
13. Blake Wheeler - 89 OVR
14. Phil Kessel - 89 OVR
15. Anze Kopitar - 89 OVR
16. David Pastrnak - 88 OVR
17. Auston Matthews - 88 OVR
18. Patrice Bergeron - 88 OVR
19. John Tavares - 88 OVR
20. Evgeny Kuznetsov - 88 OVR
21. Patrick Kane - 87 OVR
22. Patrik Laine - 87 OVR
23. Vladimir Tarasenko - 87 OVR
24. Artemi Panarin - 87 OVR
25. Tyler Seguin - 87 OVR
26. Jack Eichel - 87 OVR
27. Jamie Benn - 87 OVR
28. Aleksander Barkov - 87 OVR
29. Mark Stone - 87 OVR
30. Johnny Gaudreau - 87 OVR

I rated defensemen based on 65% stats from the 2017-18 season and 35% Corsi ratings. I made a few tweaks here and there as well.

Here are my updated top defensemen:

1. Victor Hedman - 92 OVR
2. Drew Doughty - 91 OVR
3. P.K. Subban - 90 OVR

12. Seth Jones - 87 OVR
13. Ryan Ellis - 87 OVR
14. Ryan Suter - 87 OVR
15. Shea Weber - 87 OVR

I rated goalies based on 65% stats from the 2017-18 season and 35% stats from the 2016-17 season. I made a few tweaks here and there as well.

Here are my updated top goalies:

1. Pekka Rinne - 91 OVR
2. Jonathan Quick - 90 OVR
3. Tuukka Rask - 90 OVR
4. Sergei Bobrovsky - 89 OVR

It's almost unbelievable how our ratings are similar now! We have one or two overall ratings difference here and there, but they are all very close.

To go into more details, the only forwards that I have in my top 30 and that you don't have are: Backstrom at 27 and Toews at 30. I don't have Stone and Pastrnak in my top 30, but they are 31 and 32 in my list!

For defensemen, I have Keith at 14 and Ekman-Larsson at 15. On the other hand, I have Ellis at 16 and Byfuglien at 17.

Great work! These are pretty spot on according to me!

Did you get Vasy in your top 8 this time? It made no sense why he was excluded before. Especially since you're basing your ratings on last years performances. Vezina finalist and carried the Lightning in the playoffs.

I don’t really agree. Vasilevskiy had a great year (he actually started out as arguably the best goalie in the league), but his end of year stats weren’t as good as other goalies. He had a 2.62 GAA and a 0.920 SV%. His record of 44-17-3 was remarkable though. I just can’t rank his stats better than the goalies I had above him.

2017-18 goalie stats that, in my opinion, out-ranked Vasilevskiy:

1. Rinne 2.31 GAA, 0.931 SV%
2. Hellebuyck 2.36 GAA, 0.924 SV%
3. Fleury 2.24 GAA, 0.927 SV%
4. Quick 2.40 GAA, 0.921 SV%
5. Rask 2.36 GAA, 0.917 SV%
6. Raanta 2.24 GAA, 0.930 SV%
7. Crawford 2.27 GAA, 0.929 SV%
8. Hutton 2.09 GAA, 0.931 SV%

Vasilevskiy’s 2016-17 stats were 2.61 GAA, 0.917 SV%. Those stats were very similar to the 2017-18 season; however, his record was only 23-17-7, which was much worse than his 2017-18 record.

I currently have Vasilevskiy at 85 OVR.

8. Antti Raanta - 87 OVR
Our rankings for forwards and defensemen were so similar, but goalies are quite different. I personally find it a bit hard to rank goalies based exclusively on stats, because most of the time, the team in front of him plays a huge part in it (goals against, quality of shots received, etc.). Wins are really important for goalies, but it's more of a team stat too. Number of starts is also important, but you don't want to hurt a goalie's ratings if he played less only because of injuries either. It's definitely a bit tricky.

I have as top 10:
1. Bobrovsky
2. Price
3. Holtby
4. Rinne
5. Vasilevskiy
6. Rask
7. Quick
8. Hellebuyck
9. Fleury
10. Dubnyk

Love these kind of debates and support, nobody is wrong, just one opinion vs. another.

Personally would I have Vasi over Raanta and Hutton? Not for my roster, but very interesting to see the stats. For me this would have to be a case of relying on my eyes rather than the numbers.

Re: NHL 19 Revamped Rosters - Top Player Ratings

I will never please everyone with all of the ratings. The ultimate goal behind the Revamped Rosters is to try to produce stats that are as close to real life as possible.

The good news is that anyone can tweak ratings to get them exactly as he/she wants them. My goal is to get you 90% of the way there so you just have to tweak a few ratings.
