Re: "Uncoachable"
Cam Newton Lands in Minnesota
Teams with starting quarterback needs like the Chargers and Patriots passed on Cam following his release from the Panthers. The draft went by, teams like the Dolphins and Bengals selected their futures. Another head-scratching few weeks went by, and nothing for Cam. Until Rick Spielman called and offered Cam a chance. Mike Zimmer did not confirm any quarterback competition as Kirk Cousins had a solid year in 2019, but did guarantee Cam would be a part of the offense going into the regular season.
Josh Gordon Gets Another Chance
Following the ratification of the new CBA that prohibited suspensions for positive marijuana tests, Roger Goodell began revisiting previous cases of current players hampered down by the past regulations. The facts are, however, that Gordon failed two drug tests: one for substance abuse, and the other for performance-enhancing substances relating to steroids. He will serve a six-game suspension in 2020, but that did not stop the Los Angeles Chargers from offering him a one-year prove-it deal.
Brady's Successor: Andy Dalton?
All offseason, the Patriots moves have indicated they were selling-out on Jarrett Stidham as their new starting QB with the departure of Tom Brady to Tampa Bay. They brought back Brian Hoyer, but that's just stability and a veteran presence. Belichick passed upon a strong free-agent QB class, headlined by Phillip Rivers, Cam Newton, Marcus Mariota, and Jameis Winston. In the draft, they couldn't find the right situation to select a QB despite prospects like Jalen Hurts, Jake Fromm, and Jacob Eason being available at their picks. They signed Brian Lewerke and J'Mar Smith as UDFAs, and now the final hat has dropped. With the Bengals releasing former franchise QB Andy Dalton, Belichick has finally tipped his hand. With 5 quarterbacks on the roster, all eyes are on The Red Rifle vs. Stidham.
Clowney Ends His Patience, Signs with New England
2014's first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney had set his market value high with a starting price as high as $20 million a year. With 32 career sacks, and a crazy good motor, he is definitely a wanted commodity but the price was too steep for most teams in the early stages of free agency. The price dropped as each staged passed, yet Clowney was still unsigned as training camp peered around the corner. The Patriots offered a one-year deal, reportedly worth around $7 million laced with incentives and a team-option attached. About 13 million less than wanted, but placed into a winning culture and the whims of a defensive mastermind in Bill Belichick.
Rams To Replace Gurley with Falcons RB Devonta Freeman
The Rams cut ties with Todd Gurley at the end of the 2019 season, and he found his way to Atlanta. Atlanta's former starting tailback Devonta Freeman, who struggled to stay healthy and barely averaged over 3.5 yards per attempt in 14 starts last season. He'll get another shot in Los Angeles in McVay's system that in years past have been kind to his style of running back.
