NHL 2020 Offseason

And so it begins.

Leafs trade Kapanen to the Pens.

From what I've read, people seem to think Leafs got better end of this deal, joking that Pens might have confused Liljegren and Lindgren, thinking Lindgren was the Leafs better D prospect.

Hallander is Pens 3rd best prospect, and they also got the 15th overall pick.

IIRC the Canes get 13th pick from Leafs for Marleau, so Leafs undid the Marleau trade basically by giving up Kapanen instead, but also getting a good prospect out of it.

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason

Asking price for a cost-controlled middle six guy was a mid/late 1st at the deadline, so Dubas did well especially considering the Leafs' incoming cap circumstances. It'll be interesting in what he does with the pick and the cap; it never felt like he truly maximized the cap space he got in dumping Marleau.

Wings re-up Fabbri for 2 years, 2.95 M per. If he continues to be good, the Wings could trade him for the aforementioned mid/late first. If he was a flash in the pan, it's not like the Wings are going anywhere soon anyways. May as well spend the cap space somehow.

As far as the offseason shopping list, Wings could use a goalie and a D to round off the roster. Matt Murray, Carter Hutton and Jake Allen could be goalies teams are trying to dump.

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason

Dealing Marleau let Leafs keep Johnsson and Kapanen.

At this point, minus Rielly, Matthews, Tavares and probably Marner, nobody else is untouchable.

Even Andersen could go, but I'd imagine that only happens if Leafs for sure sign Lehner or Markstrom. Though I don't think Andersen is a problem for them at all, but it would be a bonus for them to sign a replacement for him and deal him to help in an area of need.

Andersen,Johnsson,Kerfoot,Engvall are names which could be gone next. That's about 13m right there. Andersen's replacement will cost about the same, so those moves would save about 8m really. 8m which hopefully could land them someone like Pietrangelo.

Fantasy GMing now, but if they sign Lehner and then have a top 3D core of Rielly,Muzzin,Pietrangelo, that's a better team than this past season. You'd still have the big 4 on offense plus Mikheyev, Robertson,Hyman and 5 others (I'd imagine 1 or 2 vet FA signings like they did with Spezza last year, and the rest are AHL guys like Petan,Bracco and others).

Canes with interest in Andersen.

I'd say Slavin or Hamilton would have to be involved to consider it.

If the package includes Hamilton or Slavin then it should be a hard pass. There is no way I would give up either one, both are all-star defenseman. They just need to try and get someone in Free Agency if possible to solidify the goaltending position.

I don't think you have much to worry about. The Leafs getting a king's ransom for Andersen (who has one year left on his contract) in a year where there's an extremely strong FA market for goalies (Holtby, Lehner, Markstrom, Khudobin, Crawford, Greiss) is wishcasting of the highest order.

Re: NHL 2020 Offseason

On that note...

Habs got Jake Allen for a 3rd pick.

So next year they're spending almost 15M on goaltending. Unless.....

Allen's 30 and only has one year left on his contract. It's a baffling deal, unless...

A. The Habs are all-in for 20/21 (I mean...)
B. The Habs think they can flip Allen for more than a 3rd
C. The Habs think they can find someone dumb enough AND with enough cap space to take Price
