Red in the Face

I want a place to store my stats and accolades for the Reds chise I'm building-- I'm From SD so naturally a Padres fan, but I chose the Reds for a love of their field, roster, and history. This will not mirror real-life and Bauer is on the team still and I'm on 20. I'll include OOTP style storylines along the way. Since I’m in the final month of season 1, I’ll include a mock of newspaper article headlines til the point we’re at.

The story begins toward the end of year one.

A brief summation of moves by the newspaper headlines:

Re: Red in the Face

Tyler Mahl Embarrassed in Call-up

After being stuck with a 54.00 ERA in 1.1 innings, which was beyond an abysmal performance that included 2 hit batters, 8 earned runs off 6 hits and 0 strikeout at home against the Brewers, Mahl was told ten minutes after the game that he was being sent back down to Louisville.
Heading into the outing, there was virtually no pressure on Mahl to perform and even a mediocre performance would've sufficed in holding the 5th rotation spot-- the call-up was an open audition to remain on the big league squad moving forward (possibly next season as well). After fumbling in Spring Training to an ERA over 6.. he was told he'd spend some time in AAA to work on mechanics and get the call sometime this season.
After a 6-9 record in 155.1 innings 136 K 31 BB 3.19 ERA 1.07 WHIP and Trevor Bauer heading to the IR, he received that phone call from Brandon Phillips, " It was regrettable, but it's baseball."
It was so embarrassing that Mahl headed to the dugout and started packing his locker before the 5-8 loss to the Brewers concluded.

Hunter Greene to make Debut

The Reds decided to call-up Hunter Greene, the 20 year old, who posted a 5-6 record in 86.2 ip 87K 42 BB 3.22 ERA 1.44 WHIP with the Louisville Bats.
He will be making his MLB debut tomorrow against the Brewers, pushing Luis Castillo start back a day.
All this comes after Bauer 10-5 in 151.2 IP 166K 70 BB 3.20 ERA 1.50 WHIP fractured his hand against the Cardinals August 25th in the 1st inning. When the team announced he will miss the remainder of the season, it was up to the players in the minors for relief as the trading deadline passed and the market offered nothing but expensive aging vets.
A tough break for Bauer and the Reds who signed him earlier this season to a 5 year 91 million dollar extension.

Greene Can’t Recover After Rocky 1st inning in MLB Debut

Greene going 6 IP 6 H 3 ER 6 SO 4.50 ERA and taking the loss as they fell 1-6 to the Brewers. It was just enough to cement his status in the rotation moving forward. 40,203 (95% cap.) were on hand as the young rising star who managed 2 quick outs on 2 pitches before walking Yelich and immediately giving up a homer to Hiura on a hanging curveball. His 1st career strikeout came on the first batter in the 2nd.
“If you take away the 1st inning homer, his line would be sexy time. We aren’t concerned..” Reds manager assured reporters after the game. “ He’s going to be our 5th pitcher moving forward.”

Tough Choice for 2 Roster Spots as September Call-Ups Conclude

Anthony Bass, who came in way of a trade with Toronto early in the season, played 21 games with a 2-1 record 1 BS 2 HLD in 22.2 IP 20 H 12 R 9 ER 4 HR 4 BB 11K 3.57 ERA before being sent down for a southpaw. He received the news that he was one of the two call-ups after posting a 5-1 record in 54.1 IP 56K 8 BB 2.32 ERA 1.03 WHIP for the Louisville Bats.

Aquino played 11 games to start the season posting the following line before being sent down when the team signed Puig: 40 AB 10 H 3 R 1 HR 3 RBI 11K 1 CS .250 avg .262 OBP. He received the call-up after 311 AB with the Bats scoring 47 R 13 HR 52 RBI 7 SB .305 AVG. He recently signed a 3 year 3.48M extension.

A deep look at the pitching stats:

The Batters will be placed here:

---Reserved for Batting stats---

A look at the Reds 1st Draft of Brandon Phillips Era:

Many within the Reds don't believe the opening day catcher is on this roster. 1st round pick Greg Stewart is projected to be in the show sometime next season, and he will be given the opportunity to compete in Spring Training for the catcher role-- it's unlikely with his low fielding ability.

LF Schreiber was a reach.
Katin and Oh are good depth

5th rounder SP Alex Pollock may end up being the best of this draft for the Reds

Levandowski and Villanueva both are long named RP fillers.

Re: Red in the Face

Evans Signed Cheap 14 years 374.30M

“Todd Evans is the greatest rookie discovered ever.”

When you look at top MLB contracts signed, Todd Evans now ranks second behind Mike Trout and his 12 year- 430M deal with the Angels, and ahead of third on the list Mookie Betts with a respectable 365M.
Last season, toward the end, the Reds…after their latest prospect suffered a humiliating bout of stage fright in his debut for the team, sent scout Al Percolo, who discovered the young man..as punishment in the off-season to the*Mexican*countryside to look for his next find… there he found Albert Brooks and Brendan Fraser shooting a 1994 movie, but he also discovered a phenomenal 18 year old centerfielder in Todd Evans.
He convinced the Reds front office and ownership to take a chance on the unknown prospect, calling him the best damn player he’s ever seen EVER.
Given his history,Al was laughed off the phone, but when he threatened to take Todd to the Yankees for an open tryout, the Reds agreed to sign him to a 1 yr - 500k deal, extending a spring training invite.

In 136 games and after his first all-star appearance, he is the favourite to win MVP, the batting title, ROYT, Hank Aaron Award, 2nd behind Victor Robles for a Gold Glove, and the Silver Slugger Outfield award.

A look at his Ranking NL and (AL)

1st in Batting War— 13.2 (1st)
1st in Batting AVG— .368 (1st)
1st in Hits— 177 (2nd)
27th in ABs— 481 (32nd)
1st in 2Bs— 39 (1st)
1st in 3Bs— 11 (1st)
1st in HRs— 54 (1st)
1st in RBI—128 (1st)
1st in Runs— 118 (1st)
21st in SB— 12 (23rd)
10th in BB— 76 (T4)
1st in OBP— .456 (1st)
1st in SLUG— .832 (1st)
1st in OPS— 1.287 (1st)

Phillips commented after the extension, “He’s going to break the single season homerun record next season, he’s at what 54 now.. with a month of the season left…Hell, he might break it now, then his own record next year. Record shattering stuff. And the season after that, and so on. He will hit above .300 forever. The man is worth triple what we paid, he is a baseball machine. We lucked out and he’s made a lot of men rich and looking smart…. Don’t be surprised if he becomes, deservingly, the wealthiest player ever before this contract is even up. I would’ve signed him 600M..”

-------

Kyle Farmer Sent Down, Barnhart Reactivated from IR

Farmer managed to catch 31 games sharing time with Narvaez (came in way of trade once Barnhart officially hit the 60-day IR) He will finish the season in AAA.. in those 31 games he managed 108 AB 26 H 2 HR 13 RBI 9 BB and a .241 avg.
Farmer's contract ends this season and he is expected to test the FA market.

REDS CLINCHED DIVISION, FINISH SEASON 98-64

CIN- The Reds are ranked 5th in the MLB. Heading into the first season under Brandon Phillips they were projected to finish 4th in the NL Central division...They ended up winning the most games since 1976, when they went an insane 102-60 and won the WS 4-0.
No one could've predicted the flurry of moves they would make during this Spring Training, and throughout the season as well. The kind of moves that pushed long-time faces out and new-era dynasty players in with the arrival of Evans, Chisholm, Reyes, and Bummer-- to name a few.
"It was a perfect storm, the management change and hitting on rookies and team chemistry. It's just the beginning in Cincinnati." Manager Brandon Phillips said. He is on pace to win Manager of the Year.
How did we get here?

Well, Todd Evans 159 G 563 AB 139 R 207 Hits 61 HR 146 RBI 15 SB .368 AVG .459 OBP .817 SLUG 15.2 WAR certainly is a reason. It's the reason he won almost every award imaginable and a 14-year contract extension.

They also had a star pitching in Luis Castillo, who won a gold glove himself, and came 2nd in the Cy Young race behind Kershaw. Kershaw who went 18-3 2.62 ERA and 233 K 7.1 WAR... Luis Castillo would finish with a 16-4 record on 224 IP 251 K 2.17 ERA 72 BB 1.07 WHIP 10.08 K/9 2.89 BB/9 and 6.0 WAR.. By the way, the 27 year old Castillo insanely low ERA was ranked 1st in the league. I bet he is kicking him self for signing for cheap on that 5 year 35.88M extension.

Early in the year, we saw Joey Votto head to the Phillies for Segura and Herrera (sent to SD in Pagan deal) Lets see how it played out:

The 36 year old Votto ended up having 233 ABs with the Phillies, after some injury time, he managed 8 HRs 28 RBI 24 BB .288 AVG .360 OBP .429 and a 0.6 WAR. He is due 22.5M in 2021 and 22.5M in 2022. The Phillies ended up 4th in the NL East (78-84) 15 GB of the Mets.

The 30 year old Segura, for the Reds, managed 612 ABs 182 Hits, 82 R, 14 HR, 71 RBI, 22 SB, .297 AVG, and .349 OBP and 3.4 WAR. He is due 14 M in 2021 and 14M in 2022.

Verdict: The Reds will send a B ranked prospect to be named later to try and lessen the Phillies burn.

Herrara played the entire season for Pads AA team-- stats unavailable.

Next the Reds sent SS Galvis back to the Padres.. Herrera and Minor League Catcher Casall too, Pads Gave Pagan in Exchange. Let's take a look:

Pagan played 54 games went 2-3 13 Saves 6 Blown Saves 22 HLD 55K 1.70 ERA 1.1 WAR

Galvis was basically moved for his 5M salary. He played 114 games for San Diego, with 302 AB 21 R 74 H 11 2B 7 HR 24 RBI 5 SB .245 AVG .277 OBP .364 SLG and 0.6 WAR

Herrara AA stats unavailable
Casali AAA stats unavailable

Verdict: A fair trade

Then Miley was traded to Toronto for Bass, where the southpaw finished the season with an 8-7 record 1 BS in 136.2 IP 112 K 4.21 ERA 1.51 WHIP 1.1 WAR
He was traded for being 33 and due 7.5M this season and 7.5M next season.

Bass managed a 2-3 record in 29 games 31.1 IP 18K 4.02 ERA 1.28 WHIP -0.3 WAR with the Reds. Spending almost the entire season at AAA

Verdict: No one cares

We will look over three more trades then move on, first this one: Marlins and Reds Exchange Prospects: SP Nick Lodolo, SS Jose Garcia, and Josh VanMeter for SS Jazz Chisholm, and RP Yimi Garcia.

This one is difficult as AAA stats are unavailable... The Marlins ultimately got a 21 year old southpaw Nick Lodolo who spent the entire season in AAA, but now has a 79 Overall B Potential. He throws a 96 MPH FB, has 81 Velocity, and 80 Stamina. He should be on their opening day squad next season.

The 25 year old VanMeter played in 58 games had 191 AB 3 HR 20 RBI .272 AVG .382 OBP 1.6 WAR. It will be interesting to see what the Marlins do at this position as Villar and Berti are both above him on the roster, but set to test the FA market. He is also battling Isan Diaz for the spot.

The 21 year old Jose Garcia (SS) is 70 Ovr and B pot. He played all season in AAA.

How did Chisholm and Garcia do?

Chisholm played in 67 games had 136 AB 4 HR 19 RBI 2 SB 1 CS .309 AVG .373 OBP and 1.5 WAR

Yimi Garcia wound up being traded at the deadline as part of the Narvaez package when Barnhart went down. He played the season at AAA for the Reds. During his time in MIL
he managed: 0-3 2 SV 2 BS 24.1 IP 27 K 3.33 ERA 1.32 WHIP and 0.1 WAR

Verdict: I'd say it's fair. The Marlins now have an ace in Lodolo and Vanmeter will be serviceable moving forward. Chisholm is the coolest player on the Reds and Garcia is just useless..

INDIANS Send Naquin (CF) and Reyes (RF) to CIN for Siani (CF), Ervin (RF), and Sims (RP)

This was an interesting trade because the Indians would go on and later trade Siani (CF) to Baltimore in part of a package that brought them Trey Mancini (RF), which paid huge dividends as Mancini put up huge numbers:
TOT: 156 G, 162 H , 34 2B, 40 HR , 103 RBI, .271 AVG .342 OBP .543 SLG 2.6 WAR

Siani spent the entire season at AAA ball and improved his overall to 78. He should see the bigs next season as the starting RF for Baltimore.

It might've pushed Ervin off the roster as he was sent down to their AAA team. He managed to play in 73 games had 253 AB 72 H 9 HR 43 RBI 7 SB 1 CS .285 AVG .356 OBP and a 1.7 WAR

Finally the Indians didn't see much out of RP Lucas Sims, as the 25 year old had an abysmal 6.24 ERA and 2.02 WHIP...He went 79.1 IP gave up 111 hits 15 HR walked 49 . He started 9 games for the Tribe, managing to finish with an 0-5 record. The prospect from Georgia will look to bounce back next season.

Now on the Reds side,

Naquin played in 132 games for the Reds, 348 ABs, 84 H, brought in 13 HRs and 55 RBI, and managed a mediocre .241 AVG .312 OBP and 1.9 WAR

Expectations were sky high for Reyes, the 24 year old 80 overall RF, but his numbers were so-so... He played 91 games and with 260 ABs managed 44 runs on 61 hits, 14 HR and 42 RBI, struckout 81 times, and managed a .235 AVG and sad -0.2 WAR. He was so bad at times, that the Reds were forced to sign troubled Puig to fill-in who managed 6 HRs and 18 RBI in 45 games.

Verdict: Very Exciting. I actually would say the Indians won this trade. They excited me by trading for Mancini, and I can't wait to see how Siani develops in Baltimore next year. Reds had more expectation from Reyes who put up 37 HRs in 2019 for the Indians. Naquin was as expected.

After 3- Blown Saves RP Lorenzen Traded with High-Grade AAA Prospect Tapia (CP), and Janakowski (CF) to White Sox for Bummer (RP)

The Reds were absolutely surprised they landed Bummer, and immediately made him their CP. Who can blame them, in total he managed 41 saves with 6 blown saves, pitched 44.1 innings, struck out 51 and finished the season with a 3.25 ERA. Plus the 26 year old is locked up until 2024 on a contract that tops out at 4M. He finished 5th in saves. The honour went to Dodgers Kenley Jansen who managed 55 saves.

So how did the White Sox make out?

Well, they got a pretty decent righty in Lorenzen. in 40 Tot games, he went 56.2 IP gave up 21 ER, had 1 SV 1 BS, and finished with a 3.34 ERA 1.31 WHIP 0.7 WAR. Their closing situation was a revolving door, with 28 year old Cordero getting the most with 27 Saves and 7 BS. They still as a team ranked higher (15th with 50 saves) than the Reds (17th 48 saves)

The best part of the deal for them was a young Ryan Tapia who at 19 is 76 OVR and should be their future closer for awhile. He played an unknown amount of games in AAA. He has a 96 velocity and 70 K/9 with a 76 Bb/9. He should continue to develop and smooth out this trade a bit.

Jankowski was just fodder. He bounced up and down from the majors to minors. He did manage 108 AB for Chi town, but did nothing remarkable... .222 avg 4 HR and 10 RBI. Nothing worthy of the 1.2M contract he signed earlier with the Reds.

Verdict: Reds won this year, but Tapia might be a damn good closer for Chi town, might help elevate them to a few more wins than their 3rd place 79-83 finish this year.

The final trade we will look at is: Desperate Reds Buzzer- Beating Deadline Trade: RP Garcia, Prospects 2B Blandino and SP Lopez to Milwaukee for Catcher Narvaez, Farmer set to Backup...

This trade is the only one that Reds GM wish he hadn't made. Why? Because intra-division trades are rare and stupid... Did you know the semi-recent trade of Yankees Adam Ottavino to the Red Sox is the first winter trade between the Yankees and Red Sox since February 17th, 1937.
The Reds have become so disinterested by this trade... so much so that they told Narvaez that he will be a free agent after the season. An interesting thing since he put up the 3rd most HR on the team with 26... In 442 combined ABs he hit 70 RBI and finished with a .267 AVG and respectable 4.5 WAR. He was still a subpar catcher with low reaction and mediocre arm strength that couldn't throw anyone out.

The Brewers, who finished 2nd behind the Reds, but are a wild card team, didn't get much out of Yimi Garcia. As earlier stated, he only saw action in 25 games and finished with an 0-3 record 2 SV 2 BS and 3.33 ERA

They also didn't get much out of Blandino, the 2nd baseman is 63 overall B potential 27 year old and probably won't set the league on fire.

Jose Lopez, the 26 year old 75 overall B prospect, had an unknown season, but considering he was never called-up and still has a very low BB/9, Clutch, Control, and Velocity rating... he seems to have reached his ceiling.

Verdict: The Brewers should've never accepted this trade. The Reds should've never offered it. The Brewers were forced to finish the season with Manny Pina as their everyday catcher, and he's angry after hitting the IR...out of the playoffs for 15 days. He managed 8 HRs and 28 RBI. The Brewers are now down to an odd looking fellow named Carlos Leal, the 65 overall catcher with 50 AB 2 HR and 3 RBI will be behind the dish as they take on Colorado in the WC game.

Re: Red in the Face

Reds Agree to Give Tyler Callihan to Phillies

AA player Callihan received the news that he is going to Philly for 90K. The 3rd round pick will have an easier road to the show in the NL East.
" We knew we were going to have to give up a good player at a later time in that Votto trade. Part of our agreement was dependent on certain stats that Votto needed to put up to avoid this move...and..he failed."
Tyler Callihan faced a daunting road in Cincinnati since the Reds front office seems comfortable with Nick Senzel and longtime Royals Moustakas at the 2B position for the near future, "just not a lot of room for him to advance right now. And part of this trade is making sure good players make it to the show and make this league competitive. I can't wait to see what Callihan does in Philly." First time manager Brandon Phillips added.
The Phillies have no depth at 2B as their starting 2B Josh Harrison is a .233 hitter with a 71 overall. They have virtually no prospects waiting in the wing.
Phillips concluded, "We hope this evens out a bit that Votto trade."
19 year old 72 OVR A POT Tyler Callihan will become a part of the Phillies organisation officially when the off-season starts.

FELIX HERNANDEZ Comeback Player of the Year:

Felix Hernandez was presumed done after 2019 when the long time Mariner parted ways with Seattle... putting up a 1-8 record with a 6.40 ERA in 15 games for Seattle in 2019 was a nail in the coffin. When he signed in our alternate universe... He wasn't even expected to make the Braves roster, so when the 32 year old was named the 5th starter it was a bit of a surprise for the league... After 32 games he went 13-9 with 170.2 innings 16 quality starts and 148 K 3.96 ERA and an average 1.33 WHIP and 0.8 WAR, his biggest problem was a piss poor 3.53 BB/9--- still no one else deserves the honour.

Breaking: 20-year-old Androstenedione Bonds will be Eligible for FA This Season: First Son of Gay Parents

Androstendione, who goes by "Andy" for short, was born in San Francisco, and was conceived using the juice of two men...Barry and Mark. Both declined to have their last name made public.
" We are so proud of our son. The night he was conceived, October 5th, 2001, I broke Mark's... record. We knew he was destined to carry-on the tradition. Our love S.F child. It was difficult because both our testicles shrunk so much, but we did it, we made him."
Andy Bonds is a special young man that is ripped. Absolutely jacked. He projects to be a liability in the field and should sign with an AL team, but he is expected to be a young rising star.
