Is Rec The Most Poorly Designed Mode in All of Gaming? (Next Gen)

Under perfect conditions, with decent teammates, full teams of actual players (not bots) that are not complete selfish jerks the mode can be fun. But what are the actual chances of that happening. The design choices in this mode are so mind boggling it actually seems like it was designed to fail.

Lets first start with the matchmaking or lack thereof. This seems to continuously pit full squads of completely leveled up players against randoms of various levels. Right from jump it is obviously going to be a blowout and everyone knows it. As a matter of fact the vast majority of games played in the rec are blowouts.

Next is there being no penalty for quitting or dashboarding. This means that people quickly quit as soon as things turn unfavorable leaving others to play with bots.

Which leads to the bots compounding the problem because they are actually even worse than the players that they replace who already played like complete morons. The bots make so few of their wide open attempts and space the floor so poorly that the other team never guards them and the opposing players will just roam around making the ballhandler miserable. If you quickly pass to the bot to to alleviate the double/triple team the bot more likely than not will just jack up a clank before you can move into open space or any teammates left will spam x no matter their position or openness on the court. Worse yet is that the bot just does not register much of a contest for whatever reason so a badged up player can just shoot and green in the bots face without any worry of getting open. This makes the game that much less fun where a players just runs down catches on the bot shoots and makes ad nauseum. Everyone else gets to stand there and do nothing.

I am not even addressing any gameplay mechanic problems, op badges, or fact that the mode doesn't even load some of the time. These 3 issues make the mode basically unplayable. Even if you are the squad that gets to go in and slaughter some randoms the game will not be fun. Most of them will quit by half time leaving you to play braindead bots. I have a hard time thinking of any other mode in any game that seems to be designed this poorly. Sure there are a lot of games just hampered by bugs and are broken but these are actual design choices from a AAA studio.

Those bots are probably there because of the small population next gen has now.

They should make those bots be lebron and such to spice things up lol

Wouldn’t matter. Superstar players still can’t shoot.

Unless it’s different on next gen, you’d have the same issues. I’ve been running PNO exclusively for about 2 months and I routinely had bits of steph curry, James Harden, luka, Dame, etc and it’s bricktown for all of them. Occasionally you will get lucky and they will go crazy and hit like 50% of their 3s but it’s extremely rare, so people still do the same thing and just leave them open

Well, to start- Expecting randoms to change, or thinking there's some kind of magical mechanic to make them play a certain way, is a pipe dream. It's just not happening. I get that not eveyone is a fan of linking with others, but you are on a site with a large amount of like minded users...sometimes you have to do your part in easing the headache.

Everything else is spot on. Matchmaking was awful this year. Not only were the bots bad, but the algorithm all together. The non penalty for quitting was tied to the many technical issues next gen had, but I don't expect that to stay around.

I dont mind being a lower level team against a high level team. I like the challenge actually. I dont have an issue with matchmaking necessarily.

The main issues in my opinion are:

- 90% of the builds are power forwards that are hall of fame level finishers, shooters, playmakers, and defenders. No real role players or anything.

- AI teammates would be fine if they just hit open shots (this would force user defenders to stay on their guy) and played tighter on ball defense to get better shot contests.

Dashboarding wouldn't be much of an issue and I wouldnt mind playing with bots if they just played better.

Next gen is always gonna have some stuff you will never see again. Devs get the fever too.

But 2k does need to make bots at least have a role. And put them on hard lock on any perimeter player. Better to have a wild running bot than to have open shooters who exploit bots.

I think one of the most overlooked things in this game for the past few years is the IQ conditioning from grinding attributes and badges by playing MyCareer. I've seen randoms bring their MyCareer skills to the Rec all of the time.

Bro you would get even more complaining if the bots were hitting game winning shots and locking people down. Solution seems like you just gotta make friends bro and play with 4 other people
