"EVERY BLADE OF GRASS" The CPU vs CPU 20th Century Ressurection Mod for Madden 22

"EVERY BLADE OF GRASS" The CPU vs CPU 20th Century Resurrection Mod for Madden 22

Why every blade of grass?

Because every single blade of grass is fought over with no quarter given by anyone. DEFENSE is the name of the game, but there are some teams in this league that challenge that notion...

Since last November, I've been working on a semi-fictional mod+roster to resurrect the old 1970s/1980s SMASHMOUTH days.

The gameplay is accurate to the era, sim stats are tuned to 1980 actual NFL stats, and you will find smash mouth, in-your-face football full of massive hits ( without the WWE animations) worthy of the "every blade of grass" moniker. But every team in the league has talent on both sides of the ball, and anyone can win this...

Most of the players are fictional but some are actual USFL and NFL players from the 1970s and 1980s.

Special teams also count, as each team has either one or two dangerous return specialists that don't do much of anything else but return kicks. They are rated 99 in elusiveness and will routinely fake you out of your shoes. kickers will also miss easy kicks, as it was in those days.

Throwback action portraits are set for abut 3-6 players per team because that is all I could find. All others are head and shoulders from current Madden but they fit the player appropriately and realistically.

* Era specific playbooks include fullback runs where most of the teams are run first and throw the bomb second.

* fixed the audio for 99% of the players so the announcers will either say their first or last name ...this was the hardest mission I had to complete!

I could not have done this without @primetime02454 who provided the base USFL roster from the 1980's and the portrait mod and @Snowballpudi who helped with the mod...also special thanks to @sabo and @scottm0351 for playbook advice.

thank you to all of you guys.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Make sure that the CPU vs CPU 20th Century Resurrection Mod for Madden 22 is set in the number one position on the bottom of your mods in FIFA Mod Manager and optionally, Sabo's Mod on top of it in the number two position. I never tried playing without his motto on top of mine so I can't vouch for the results without it. it's possible that it might be fine without it.

In the number three position above Sabo, is "Prime's custom portrait mod" here: Prime's Custom Portrait Mod 1.3.zip - Google Drive. Then just launch from Fifa mod manager.

Now onto the season preview...

The Chicago Bears are led by their fearsome monsters of the Midway, led by Tom Kilkenny, Houston Warden, John Katzenmoyer and Matt Murdock. Bringing back memories of the 1985 Bears, these guys resurrect that feeling of FEAR. on offense, the team is led by their top running back, Calvin Williamson who can both truck you over and fake you out.

The dynamic Cincinnati Bengals are led by a trio of running backs that are all top-flight. Alonzo La Habra, Archie St. Clair and David Essex are all more than capable of carrying the load for their team, but you can choose which one you want to ride with as the starter. On defense, the team relies heavily on their strong defensive line with Thomas Dax, and Marcus Sunvold leading the way, backed up by LaVar Volt and a capable wine backing crew.

The Buffalo Bills are a smash mouth team led by a solid offensive line and the elusive Pascal Pierre-Louis, the tough to bring down Ford Donnerson and the run you over fullback Tank Bigsby. on defense, if you're opposing them, you can expect a real problem with Hakeem Abdul Rasheed, Zion Voorhees, Maverick Hansen and Carlton Gunn. Quarterbacks beware!

The Denver Broncos have standouts on both sides of the ball. Brock Masters is truly a master at fullback. Not only is he a blocking nightmare, but he is a great running back as well, bringing back memories of Larry Csonka and Don Nottingham. but that's not all this team has. Pete Duford and David Forsythe are two shutdown corners on both the left and right of this difficult to deal with defense. Also expect one of the best tight ends in the league in Tom Norman, and a nicely put together linebacking crew led by John Leatherette, and Hassan Abdullah.

The Cleveland Browns might be one of the most difficult running attacks to stop in the league. Freeman Crow, Brock Buschetti and Connor Cudjo are all difficult to tackle one-on-one, and with a top-flight offensive line leading the way, they might even set records. I can hear the players on the defense complaining that they are not getting any respect so I have to mention Malcolm Shabazz, Sam Houston and Virgil Robertson as the linebacking crew that are all rated in the mid to upper 80s. Meanwhile, Bob DeMarco, the team's quarterback, is a well respected leader of men, and might be a coach one day.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are yet another team that sports a solid running attack led by Vernon Trueblood, and the trickster, Jacques LeFevour, who drives you crazy, scrambling around like Fran Tarkenton, but their real calling card is their memorable defense, bringing to mind Warren Sapp, John Lynch and those other nasty pirates from a couple of decades ago. This time their names are Dan Crossman, Kenny Brownlee, Malcolm St. John, Samson Kashama, Dedrick Dodge, James Ulysses, and Omar Ali.

The Arizona Cardinals have without a doubt, the best secondary in the league. Jack Devlin,Tim DeVoe, Luther Bradley, Evan Dangerfield, Lupe Sanchez..the list goes on and on and they are STACKED in the defensive backfield! on offense, Dracon Zacchaeus and Tommy Lee Stoneburner lead a two-pronged attack at half back with Kane Xavier, a top-flight tight end as the safety blanket for a pair of elusive running quarterbacks Khalid Karim and Ali Abdul Quddus. Expect a vicious battle for the starting quarterback job in training camp.

So at this point, I'm sure you are asking, does anyone pass in this league? Well here we are...

The San Diego Chargers are led by Mike Archambault, and backed up by Pierre Le Voir. Both are more than capable of leading your team to the championship. and with a versatile wide receiver group led by Ansah Azalea, Ricky Galeai, and Skyy St-Juste, you can't go wrong. Add in the number one tight end in the league, Lee Chamberlain, and a top-flight offensive line, and every defensive coordinator in the league stays up late at night planning for these guys, especially when you considered they also have a top-flight running game in Ebenezer Ankrah, Rock LeFors and Sidney Charleston to contend with.

...Which leads us to the Kansas City Chiefs. Remember the Nigerian nightmare? Well he's not here, but instead you will have to deal with Elijah Priest at 6 foot three 252 pounds. and just when you think you've got him contained, along comes Amos Applewhite. You laugh when you see this little guy running onto the field, but then he shakes you out of your shoes leaving you grasping at air as he runs around you for an 80 yard touchdown. Then try dealing with 6'4" TE Sam Bowers and the elusive Cat Rattler at QB. On defense, Vic Deadrick, Rod Ezekiel and Teddy Lincoln tomahawk you down, as you are trying to recover from being dominated by their offense.

The Indianapolis Colts are a balanced team with Rick Cassata at QB, DeMarius Rock at HB, and the dual TE threat of Vernon Virgil and Gunter Reichmann. Defensively, Derrick Valentine shuts down one side of the field while Zion Hellestram plugs up the D-line and Aidan Simeon cleans up at LB.

The Dallas Cowboys do their best imitation of the doomsday defense with arguably the best shutdown corner in the league in Rock Richmond, backed up by Henry Rakestraw at SS. Meanwhile, the man in the middle, Tommy Eichenberg doesn 't let anything get past him, Stevie Cottonwood, and Reggie Ruff, at the linebacker spots. If you haven't had enough yet, Deron Vincent, Gregory Spartanville and Elijah Roosevelt shut down the run up front while applying pressure to your QB, creating a vise that leads your offensive play caller to throw up his hands into the air in disgust. On offense, Sonny Sikiller leads this smash mouth group, with Walt Garrison, Al Missouri and Autry Peacock leaving behind not only three yards and a cloud of dust, but a bushel of touchdowns as well.

The Miami Dolphins can't be any good on defense can they? They are a bunch of no-name guys that don't appear to have that much talent, but put them together and here we go again. The no-name defense resurrected. Christian Von Maanen, Terry Robiskie, and Haven Blount grind up the yards in the backfield while Tony Carmazzi tries to emulate Dan Marino, with limited success. However, the wide receiver group is full of elusive players that will drive you crazy, like Curtis Roscoe, Donovan St. Adolphine. and the enigmatic Phelonius Ezzard. Ezzard might be the best kick returner in the league, but somehow he keeps making plays on offense with his blazing speed and amazing elusiveness.

The Philadelphia Eagles? Speaking of defense, Buddy Ryan could come back in coach these guys, because he would love them. Fred Hendrix, Sam Starkweather, Michael Willis, Antonio Gibson, Scott Woerner, Willie Isaac, George Rader, Mike Lush and a host of other troublemakers make this group dominant. George Riddick, Harrison Hellestrae, Kelvin Bryant and Greg Gainwell run the ball on offense with the game manager Chuck Glowinski at QB running this three ring circus. but what might give you at head coach a difficult decision is whether to start the up and comer Tim Erickson at QB instead if you care for someone a bit more mobile, but no less the game manager.

The Atlanta Falcons are led by their undisputed leader, Quinn Van Brocklin at QB, and behind him, the triple faces of death, Baron Deaderick, Earl Drakeford and Marques Clarett. They are a difficult group to deal with, because once you get used to Deaderick and Clarett's trucking, Earl Drakeford catches a 5 yard swing pass and you are suddenly down 7-0. So let's say you avoid that, and actually stop the Falcons on their first offense of possession. Now good luck dealing with Willie Tippett, Denzel Gamble, Bubba Bolton, Von Mansfield, Robert Hawkinson and Tomas Dragosavich when you are in control of the ball. This is a group that loves to strip the ball, so make sure both hands are on the ball at all times.

The Washington football team, or whatever you want to call them, call them "headache". How can you plan for both LJ Lincoln, Christian Savage, and George Bademosi in the backfield along with Richard Thorson? A versatile offense indeed, and then on defense, we have the D line of Shiva Ramesh, Abdul Rahman Ya-Sin Malcolm Turnbull and Harry O'Casey, backed by all-stars SS Montgomery Ulrich, CB Jeff Richman and CB Vernon Cherry in the secondary.

The San Francisco 49ers have a fellow by the name of Lou Vandersea at free safety. He's not quite Ronnie Lott, but close. Perhaps the best free safety in the league has plenty of help in stars Isaac Anderson Jr at LOLB, fellow outside LB's Pete DeChristopher, Demarcus Haywood, and American Indian Billy Jack Hawk manning the middle with a vengeance. Gunther Rheinhart at tight end is perhaps their most dangerous weapon, but Logan LaSalle packs a punch at fullback.

Bill Parcells would love this New York Giants team with dominant defense and a strong running game. Edgerin Steele, Isaiah Abraham, Willie Charlestone, and Andre Hellstrom, the Best quartet of linebackers in the league are very difficult to contend with, but you are no more lucky on the defensive line, contending with John Luther, Isaiah Forest and John Mendenhall. Meanwhile, if you want to stop the run, Mo Powers and Gunnar Fredrickson will make you pay. Tony Gaziano might not be the most consistent quarterback in the league, but he is capable, and when you have a defense like he has, you don't need much on offense.

So what about the Jacksonville Jaguars? How about Michael Vick times two? Reggie Robinson and La Vonn Jett have blazing speed at quarterback. Not one out of the game and the second one will beat you just as quickly. And they're no slouches throwing the ball to Shelby Shatterfield, Kenny Yarborough, and Paul Keller either. An who the hell is Jackie Vandergrift? Arguably the best cornerback in the league, who also returns kicks! And they've also got a good group of linebackers in Vincent Manuwai, Douglas Spearman, Japanese born Don Nakamura and Fernando Moon.

Is the sack exchange back? It might be. Instead of Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons and Joe Klecko, we've got John Rapier, Leo Gorski and John Dagon. On the other side of the ball, Fionn O'Rourke is the smash mouth running back backed up by the dangerous 5'9" scatback Hasaan Ankou, but not to be outdone, the offense lives up to their team nickname with QB Tony Scaccia throwing the ball to Joe Joe Hale, Vegas Jaxon, Dean DiSanti, Hasaan Mohammed and Bobby O Reilly at WR, and John Westmoreland starting at TE.

In the Detroit Lions, we have a super explosive offense, with John Charlton at QB, a quartet of top running backs featuring Michael Grayson, Earl Roberson, Ronnie Rayburn and Haywood Haskins. Blocking for them is Ronald Melvin, who also could fill in at half back if needed. He's that good. Wide receivers? How about Anthony Carter, Marques Morningstar, Theotis Hightower, Terry Lockett Jr, Lorenzo Holloway and Cornelius Johnson? All can take it the distance. and at tight end, the ever explosive Grayson Whiteheart. These are weapons galore! With a top 5 rated offensive line to boot.

On the other hand, we have the Green Bay Packers. There is no Aaron Rogers here, nor a Brett Favre, but there is Alonzo Highsmith at running back, who carries the load along with Johnny Lee Ivory and Sam Schmidt. This is a conservative offense, but they still have capable wide receivers in Pete Mandley, Jimmy O'Brien, Ali Al-Jabbar and Alonzo Staggers. On defense, Richard Case is a lockdown cornerback with John Calvin, Carl Kramer and Joe Rocco plugging up the middle. Who starts? Who sits? It's up to you, but let them fight it out in training camp and see who wins the job.

Cesario Ironside of The Carolina Panthers is probably the best middle linebacker in the league, and Carter Carriker slots in admirably at RE, but Sullivan Seawright might be the star of the team at tight end. This is a running back committee with Herb Workman, RC Alexander, Master Teague and Ronnie Harmon splitting the load, but it's up to you which one will be the starter. Whichever you choose, Brian Sanzenbacher will be handing off to them. He's an enigmatic, talented QB that has a knack for making plays, and also turning the ball over. The kind of player that gives a coach heart attacks.

The New England Patriots could have a quarterback controversy going on, with Max O'Sullivan as the strong armed half and Teddy Flynn, the improvising mobile option of this duo. Pre-season, O'Sullivan has a hold of the job, but will he be dethroned by Flynn? Outside of that, there is strength on both sides of the ball, with Willie Fears, Orville Law, Julian Eastman and Roger Churchill heading up the defense and Ivory Lee Hitchcock, John Calvin and Will Drucker leading the offense.

What? The Las Vegas Raiders are rumored to be interested in moving back to Oakland after all! What? Maybe...it's up to you. Terry Lancaster is a white shutdown cornerback with speed! What? Believe it or not. But what is really impressive is how this Raider defense harkens back to the 1970s, when George Atkinson, Jack Tatum, Otis Sistrunk and Willie Brown roamed the field. Galen LeFevere, Will Warford, Deacon Lawless, Floyd Savage and Herman Irons are only a few of this reincarnation of those legends of yesteryear. The backups on this team could start for almost any other team in the league. That is how deep this defense is. The offense is overshadowed, but capable with Orson Strong at QB, Harlan Hightower at RB, WRs Kerry Loveless, Marcus Washington, Garçon DeVernet, and one of the best tight ends in the business, Charlie McGinnis.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Rams are a powerhouse offense, led by Tom Hassenauer at QB, Warford Warnsley and Harlan Huckabee splitting the carries with the highest rated FB Bain Bruton. The receivers include the ever dangerous Lloyd London, paired with Jo Jo Earl, "Jet" Jiggets and Elmer Lamb. With possibly the best offensive line in the league, this is a team that can move the ball! On defense, Ty Rayborne is a pro bowler at corner, and James St. Juste is a standout at right defensive end, but the rest of the defense might be suspect.

Speaking of defense, did you think the Baltimore Ravens might be lacking in that area? Just ask John Antioch, the middle linebacker who leads this group. He doesn't speak much. He lets his play do the talking for him. Let's just say you don't want to meet him in a dark alley, or on any football field, anywhere. With Tory Battles, Simmie Lovelocke, Chad Thorson, and the appropriately named Odum Bademani as his running mates, you just shake your head. Do they even need an offense? It is capable, and that's about it. But if the Giants and the Ravens meet in the Super Bowl, it might be 0-0 as the final score.

So what about the New Orleans Saints? Defense or offense? How about both? Simon St. Charles, Micah Baskerville, Ben Power, Anthony Falcone, and John Vildor can really pack a punch, but then again so can Charles Whitehead, the top ballcarrier on this team. Meanwhile, Marcus Dupree, yes that Marcus Dupree offers speed to burn. To catch the ball, although the wide receiver group is arguably pedestrian, Ken McAfee and Sam Saxton gives you a solid one-two punch at tight end.

Vladmir Giogiev mans the middle of the Seattle Seahawks defense like Batman. Flanked by his Robin in LOLB Terry Trejo, the two are heroes in Seattle. But the defense doesn't stop there. Will Cortez at DT might be just as good. But the depth here is lacking. No one know if this trio can hold together a questionable group. Meanwhile, Don Cornelius leads the offense, with Melvin Dozier, Marc Sullivan and Don Ezekiel, a trio of running backs handling the carries while Hall of Famer Steve Largent, Terry Franklin, James O'Connor and Al McGinn head up the wide receiver group. And the speedy, elusive return man Johnny Rodgers gives the offense another dimension to work with.

So will the terrible towels wave in Pittsburgh? Is the steel curtain back? It remains to be seen, however we are off to a good start with Victor Haslam, Moses Solomon Tommy Maramarosa at linebackers, and Bram Van Zandt and Doug Von Oelhoffen at the defensive end spots, with Ernie Kilgo no slouch at SS. All are rated at 83 or above. the running game features a flavor for everyone. Marcus Money is the do it all back, catching the ball and running the ball both inside and outside with a great deal of elusiveness. Buster Foreman is the third-down back that might be more than that if they would give him a shot. He could start for most of the teams in the league. and Ronson Roosevelt at fullback is not only a blocker, but an accomplished ballcarrier as well.
at quarterback, Glenn Carano has a strong arm and loves to throw the ball downfield to his wide receivers Dante Isaac, Zion Andrus, Bruce Brzezinski, Jack Torrance and Frank DiFazio, but his number one target is the 6'4" TE Warford Warlick, who is as surehanded as they come.

The Houston Texans also sport a top tight end in Lloyd Vildor the brother of the New Orleans saints, John Vildor. Having grown up together, they have a rivalry that continues to this day. Both are now All-Star players. But the Houston Texans are full of offensive weapons. Wide receivers Aeneas Kizer, Marcus Redding, Sinclair St. Pierre and kick returning specialist Mohammed Al- Shabazz can all break the game open while fullback Dimitri Armour, and HBs Marcus Mercillus, LJ Thurston stuffs the ball down your throat. Not to be outdone, Curtis Redwine provides ball catching and elusiveness out of the backfield. Jack Concannon is the ringmaster of this multi-ringed circus, and while he doesn't move much, he has one of the strongest arms in the league. This defense might not be much to write about, but the offense more than makes up for it.

The Tennessee Titans have Lawrence LaGrange and Travis Bullock as their starters in the offense of backfield along with QB Beau Vilder. this is a dangerous trio, however there is a darkhorse that might emerge this season. Tommy Lee Stanzi is a dynamic, exciting quarterback that can break a game open with both his legs and his arm. While Vilder might be the safer option, Stanzi offers multi-dimensionalitythat might be too enticing for the new coach. The number one receiving option is Charles Westminster at tight end, backed up by Hudson Pope who might be the second best receiving option on the team, because the wide receivers, while capable, don't really stand out as much. On defense, Henry Ravenswood is a superstar, while Mike Truax and Cole Nordsen I'm not far behind. Unfortunately though, outside of mainstay DT Vlad Gregor, the rest of the defense leaves something to be desired. Like the New Orleans Saints, this team is limited on defense, but has an above-average offense.

Finally, the Minnesota Vikings have the number one quarterback in the league in Marshall Norseth. Handing the ball off to Gunter Dragos and Birdine Alaka, he's also got tight end Carlson Chancellor and wide receivers Rob Garrison and Terry Rashad as nice weapons to throw to. The defense is about average, so this team will have to lean heavily on their offense to produce, but with the number one QB in the league, they should not have any problem living up to expectations.
