ESPN Watering Down Commentary in Wake of Connecticut Killings Stuck
Posted on December 15, 2012 at 01:25 PM.

The opportunity for a public relations disaster is enhanced each time a large-scale tragedy occurs in our country or world.

ESPN is well aware of this and has decided not to refer to the Pistol formation as such for today's Gildan New Mexico Bowl between the Nevada Wolfpack and Arizona Wildcats. Instead, they will refer to it as the "Nevada formation." This, of course, coming on the heels of the horrific mass killing of people -- many children -- in the town of Newtown, Connecticut.

It's a respectable move to make every effort not to insight further emotional response from a hurting nation, but does it go too far?

Human beings are intelligent enough to know that the Pistol formation is contextually unrelated to violence. Just as the shotgun formation or "rifling one in there" on a pass play is a part of football, so too are hyperbolic phrases and war-like comparisons connected to the sport's production value.

Today would not be the easiest day to call a game on the radio or television for a color commentator. But is removing a phrase like "Pistol formation" an insult to our intelligence or our ability to move on? We come to sports as spectators to get away from life, and decisions such as this create awkward moments that force us to think about "why" the decision is made.

Each time I see the Pistol formation and hear it called something different, I'm going to think of the violence. Had ESPN decided to carry on without making such an exception I likely would never have made the connection between the formation and the tragic events of yesterday. But I also understand the public relations standpoint and the care that must be taken when a wound is so fresh to an entire nation.

Sound Off: What are your thoughts on the decision by ESPN to refer to the Pistol formation as the "Nevada formation" following yesterday's tragedy?

The First Amendment and Politically Correct speech, in the long run, cannot coexist - one will have to win out. People do not need to be coddled, especially by ESPN. As I tell my kids all the time, we do not have the right to not be offended. There's plenty in our culture and society that offends me, but I don't spend my life trying to shut them up, I just move on. Well meaning folks and well meaning rules always have unintended consequences.

most of the viewing public wouldnt even have noticed the switch from "Pistiol formation" to "Nevada formation". their mistake was letting the public know of this subtle change.
Most people probably didnt even know their was even a Gildan New Mexico Bowl. I sure didnt

12664 murders in 2011. 8,583 of these murders were by firearms. Thats 23 murders by guns everyday.

Not saying something doesn't change what happened. If ESPN really cares they should offer financial support and other things to the families involved. Any kind of help like that rather than empty words and gestures.

@Aggies,
if a law were passed that outlawed guns, and an option to turn in illegal firearms with some sort of amnesty clause attached to it, most criminals would turn in their guns.
Alot of these criminals dont want to carry guns. and IM talking abouth the gun crimes taht are committed in the inner cities, across AMerica. I cant speak about other regions.

there have been successful gun buy back programs with amnesty clauses in the past. Its funny that those programs happened to coincide with a drop in gun related crimes. but due to alot of bureaucracy (mainly by NRA groups) alot of those programs had to be stopped because of cost, etc.
actually the government always backs the NRA, that's why new gun legeslation gets caught up in the system. nothing ever gets done. But yet theyll pass laws like the one in Florida, where you have a bunch of civilians shooting innocent people because they happen to look intimidating. Those laws are heaviily lobbied by the NRA. NRA is a huge contributer to the US government. I swear they're probably part of the interpol and all the other secret agencies that run this country.
Guns are destroying a certain segment of this country and they love it.
THe right to bare arms has nothing to do with whats going on in society today. its an outdated concept. especailly for a so called super power, with such wealth.
interesting debate by the way

@tril First off, I don't think you can even fathom the amount of guns out there, no buy back program will get them all off the street. Even if they are made to be illegal, people aren't going to turn them in nor should they ever have to (don;t get me wrong, I think gun buy backs are great.....to get ILLEGAL guns off the street). Two, I live in FL and there are not a "bunch" of people shooting innocent civilians...there is one or two prominent cases, but there are over 1 million conceal carry citizens in FL....the perecenteges don't add up to your argument. Even if there were, do you know how many crimes have been stopped or even never occur because criminals know people in FL are carrying? Three...disarming the public is the worst thing you could ever do...why do you want to take away the ability of the public to defend themselves? Are you going to depend on the police? How many children were killed in the precious minutes it took the police to respond to the recent shooting? How many would have been saved if a teacher or principle had a conceal carry? Do you think the mass-shooters are choosing places like mall, theater, and especially schools, since they know they are gun free zones and no one can stop them until the police arrive, which is often at least 20 mins from the intitial 911 call? Just maybe? Fourth, why don't you look at the FBI's own crime statistics over the last 20 years and see the violent crimes are decreasing while gun ownership has risen? Coincidence? Place like the UK and other European countries have strict gun bans. Violent crimes have been on the rise there ever since. Fifth, why punish the public at large for the few nutcases that do these mass shootings. Responsible gun owners who purchase guns legally and are permitted legally are not the ones committing these crimes. Instead of blaming guns, maybe we need to re-address the way we look at mental illness in this country and how over-medicated these people are, as that is the #1 thing all these crimes have in common (by the way, did you know the CT shooter tried to purchase a gun several times and was denied because of the laws we already have in place preventing those with mental illness from buying?). Finally, and most importantly, you think the second amendment is out-dated, but in the same paragraph state the NRA is probably part of interpol and the other secret agencies that run this country? What do you think these "nefarious groups" that run the government would do to us once they have our guns? Do away with the Second amendment today, and maybe tomorrow it's the First. The point is, the second ammendment is not there to let us have guns to hunt or even protect each other from ourselves. It's there to protect us from our own government so we don't end up in a situation where we are ruled by tyranny like in our colonial days. Why do you think countries like Japan in WWII never even dreamed of invading the mainland U.S.? Because they knew the citizenry was armed to the teeth. I don't even own a gun, but I will defend to the death the right of our citizens to protect ourselves.
