ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Kansas City Royals used the same formula Sunday they had all series, getting strong pitching to go with efficient offense to complete a four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers on the road at Globe Life Park.
As they did all series, it was two-out runs that gave the Royals (12-6) the edge on Sunday. Back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters in their lineup, Alcides Escobar and Whit Merrifield, gave Kansas City a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning and broke what had been a 0-0 pitchers' duel.
Escobar added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 3-0. Ian Kennedy (3-1) went eight innings with six strikeouts and three walks. The Rangers only mustered four hits on the day.
In the series, Kansas City outscored Texas, 24-11, and outhit them, 46-37. The Rangers have now lost four straight and five of their last six. Texas had won three of its last four series entering its tilt versus Kansas City. All three series that Texas has lost this season has been via a sweep.
The Rangers will look for a boost when they host the 7-12 Minnesota Twins for a three-game series starting Monday.
