May Recap: Pitching Propels Thunder to a Good Month

A disappointing April had Thunder fans worried but a strong May has restored some optimism to this team. After May, the Thunder stand at 31-23, one game back of the first-place New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

A strong month for the bullpen was largely responsible for the club’s turnaround. The BP has climbed to first in the league in ERA while the starters are still just seventh. Cody Carroll has taken the closer spot, in between stints with Scranton. JP Feyereisen, the former closer, has been a shut-down setup man (with eleven saves and a 1.66 ERA.) Jordan Foley (1.10,) Jose Mesa Jr. (1.57,) and Garrett Mundell (1.09) have all been solid. Joe Harvey (1.08) continues to shine, too. The same is true of Rayner Espinal (0.92 ERA.)

In the rotation, Albert Abreu has seen his ERA drop to 5.13. The tam, and it’s fans, hope that number keeps dropping. Josh Rogers has a 2.14 ERA in 7 starts, and he made a cameo (one solid start) in Scranton, too.

Holder’s injury demoralized the whole clubhouse but the offense still has some studs. Leadoff hitter Abiatal Avelino has a .348 average. Their Estrada was sent down from Scranton and has put up a .316 average with Trenton. Estevan Florial’s average has climbed to .246. Gosuke Katoh had a good month, as his average climbed to .273. Jhalan Jackson is still struggling (.215 average) while catcher Chace Numata (.205) has struggled to replace Kellin Deglan, who was promoted to Scranton.

If the pitching keeps this up, the sky’s the limit for the Thunder this year.
