Unfulfilled Potential
Posted on November 28, 2008 at 06:43 AM.
Despite another stellar performance away from home,a hard fought 3-1 win over Sheffield United, the Molineux faithful was rocked by the news that on-loan keeper Matt Murrey had suffered another knee injury. The irony of this was it was his healthy right knee that has ruptured a tendon!!
Poor Matt was on-loan to Hereford United, who play in the lower tier 2nd Division, getting some match fitness and confidence after an 18 month rehab on first a broken shoulder followed by doing his cruciate ligement in his left knee!!!!
If ever there was a case of "what if" in the sporting arena,Matt would be a text book case,I'll take you through his career and you can decide.
2000-his first cruciate injury on his left knee, after being signed to the Wolves youth acadamy as an excellent 19 year old prospect.
2002-Finally get back to full fitness, get his chance in the first team and produces a "Man of the Match" performance, keeps the 1st choice keeper on the bench for the rest of the season.
2003-Produces another "Man of the Match" performance as Wolves win the Play-Off final to finally gain protion to the Premier League after 19 long years.
Played 5 games in the England under 21 squad, touted as the successor to David James.
2004-Never gets to play a single match in the Premier League{Wolves are relegated to the Championship after 1 season] after fracturing his foot, this injury sees him only play 7 full games in 3 years.
2006-Finally plays a full season-wins "Championship Player of the year","Wolves Player of the year" and selected in "Championship team of the year"as he helps Wolves get to the Semi-finals of the Championship play-offs.The buzz starts as Premier League clubs start scouting him,England squad rumours abound as it finally seems like Matt's on his way.Wolves act quickly and sign him to another 3 and 1/2 years, hoping to head of any contract offers from the big clubs.
The day before the big semi final play off he breaks his shoulder in training-out for 3 months,Wolves lose play-off 1-0.
2007-Back in training, suffers another cruciate injury on his left knee-two operations and out for 12 months.
2008-Left knee keeps inflaming-out till October, sent on loan in November to Hereford United after all clear given on left knee-suffers cruciate injury to right knee in 3rd game of loan spell-forcast of maybe another year out!!!!
His contact is up at the end of the next season,so I don't think Wolves will re-new it,I can't see many teams gambling on him when his contract finishes either.Have you ever heard of a more demoralising tale???
Wolves play against local rivals Birmingham city in a top of the table clash on saturday,a definate "9 pointer",can't wait, will be one of the games of the season!!!
cheers stench

Just to update Matt's injury-he had surgery this week on his pantella tendon-prognosis is maybe another year on the sidelines recovering!!!
Two weeks ago Wolves had the best goalkeeping line up in the championship, also the envy of many Premier league teams, but with the loss of Matt and 1st choice keeper Cark Ikeme they've had to loan in a back up keeper for the next month, what a difference a couple of weeks make!!!cheers Stench
