Coach Ricky Proehl has ended the speculation and announced his choices for offensive and defensive coordinator. The offensive coordinator should be no stranger to fans of Carolina Sports: Dan Morgan.
After playing professionally for the Panthers (and Saints) and most recently serving as a position coach with the Seattle Seahawks, Morgan is happy to have the opportunity. "I'm looking forward to being back in this part of the world," said Morgan. "I know this will be an uphill battle, but it is exciting to get the opportunity to run the defense. When Ricky called me, I instantly let him know that I'd like to be a part of what he is building here in Greensboro."
While the D.C. was no shock, the offensive coordinator choice will definitely catch some fans off guard. Instead of choosing someone with experience, coach Proehl went a different route.
"After meeting with executives from Fox, we agreed that the best way to encourage the rest of the country to get behind the team was to do something out of the box: hire a fan," said Proehl. "We accepted resumes from fans around the country and were very impressed with the applicants. I invited three to come out for interviews and it was the interview process that set it apart for me."
Coach Proehl chose to hire Rex Monroe, a 23 year old Kansas State University graduate, as his offensive coordinator. "I was thoroughly impressed with this kid's knowledge of the X's & O's and his passion for the game," declared Proehl. "He will totally resonate with the players and once they see what he has in mind for this season, they will follow him. I know this might seem like a publicity stunt, but rest assured Spartan fans will be glad that Rex is on our side."
Proehl then let the coordinators unveil the depth chart going into the fall. There was no surprise that Ricky's sons Austin and Blake show up prominently on both sides of the ball. Austin was granted immediate eligibility after transferring from North Carolina, where he redshirted last year. Blake, who was lightly recruited, will have a chance to prove the rest of D-1 wrong since he wasn't offered a scholarship by any other FBS institution.
