I'm fed up with how media covers sports....
Posted on May 6, 2010 at 06:11 PM.
I need to rant, bear with me. But I'm am tired of the Jim Rome/Colin Cowherd types who nationally try to dog out as many athletes as they possibly can. They know very little about the X's and O's of the sports they cover, but will bad mouth and berate players as much as they can. Even the local sport radio stations either talk about everything else other than sports, or just as critical of the guys who they cover. What happened to sports reporting that actually focused more of the attention to what happens on the the field instead of reading police reports and listening to scanners.
My theory is they don't know the sports that they are covering. They don't learn the difference between a cover 3 or a cover 4. They don't even do the necessary show prep to intelligently talk about the actual game. Its all just uninformed opinions based on if the guy signed an autograph for their kid or not. Some guys get vilified in the press because they won't hang out with certain media members or give them their cell phone numbers. They can make up stuff from an "unnamed source" , just to push their own agenda.
I also believe that there is alot of jealousy present and its obvious in the "TMZ" styled reporting. You see countless examples of how they love to build a player up just to pull him down later. I don't view it as racial thing completely, but race may have a role in it. I just needed to vent after riding around in my car and out of the 3 stations in Dallas, none were talking sports, all were talking about non sports issues. I really could care less about how a player leaves his/her life outside the arena, what do you think?

I feel you man. ESPN radio has been on a little less in my car. Mike and Mike in the morning is still my favorite but, the actual games are getting the backseat to the lifestyle/ political issues. The Suns jerseys are the headline of the day who won?

Is this in reference to the latest LT arrest?

Jim Rome? Sports? I didn't know the bum even talked about sports. I turn on his crap radio show and he always has some ******** smack-off, when I want to hear about the draft, I have to hear about a stupid smack-off, I so hate his show, sucks so damn much every station in my area has to have him on ugh, and Yeah he loves to "talk sports" only when its some bs news, he doesn't have anything to say when its just sports, but when someone breaks the law or something like the Las Suns or w/e he acts like hes mr-know-it-all when it comes to sports, he is the definition of what sports talk radio shouldn't be.

As a former member of the sports media (thankfully, I covered preps so I could keep my integrity in check), I have to agree that a lot of the mainstream "reporting" is pure crap.

ESPN has really shifted towards more entertainment-style than hard news. They are trying to compete with the TMZ's of the world, who can just post whatever they want, whenever they want, regardless if they have all the facts or not.

Look at the Brett Favre saga; ESPN tries to make fun of itself about the coverage, yet the past 2 years they were camped outside of his home filing daily reports on if Favre was wearing jeans or shorts while mowing the lawn.

All of these TV and radio personalities take hard-line stances to try and stir up controversy. Controversy does sell and it does get people talking, no matter how contrived the argument.

This isn't response to the LT stuff, I just got very angry in my car picking up my daughters from school and one station was talking about immigration, the other about entertainment news, and the other some random mess that they get a kick out of.

It's all about money and ratings. Sensationalism sells.

Look no further than my recent blog about ESPN and NFL Network's coverage of the NFL Draft. They spoiled the announcement by the commissioner for the sake of reporting the pick first, and subsequently cheapened the draft.

I would rather rub sandpaper on my sac than listen to Jim Rome.

So where do we turn for true sports radio? Where they actually spend most of the time on the game and personnel moves as it relates to the actual play on the field.

I think the sport owned networks do a pretty good job of keeping it about the sport, but even the local newspapers are gossipy nowadays

I am so desperate for true sports talk that I downloaded the sports radio app for the iphone that lets you listen to a bunch of stations from around the country. It is helping somewhat, but I need a true sports station. There is one guy in Dallas that is pretty good, Norm Hitzges on KTCK 1310 the ticket from 10-noon cst. Most of the other shows on that station unfortunately don't keep it about sports.

I agree with Utexas on this topic 100%. ESPN reports a lot of crap any more I wish they would go back to covering just sports. As for Cowherd and Rome those two are trash. I won`t even turn on the Herd or Rome they are both garbage with very little sports knowledge.

If you like college sports then you should definitely give Rivals Radio a chance. You can hear it on Sirius/XM or download the podcast. It`s on Monday-Friday for 3 hours. I also enjoy listening to Tim Brando on Sporting News radio which is another podcast you can get.

There is too much focus on money and arrests. There is too little analysis of the games. If you read regular coverage on a daily basis, they go with feature stories, shooting for controversy, rather than telling what happened.

What happened in the games, that is.

In terms of media, sports video games are still a sub culture, so they will never get it right, because they are not immersed into the culture. They understand the popular games, but don't get the overall culture or the gamers.

ESPN in the 90's was at it best now it is show after show watered down with screaming analyst.^^^ And what does this topic have anything to do with sports gaming.
