Raymond Rose Legacy Reborn (CH2K8)

Here we go again! Had to cut short and kill my 10-year old Raymond Rose Legacy after my PS3 gave up on me. Someone did attempt to revive my system successfully but warned it has seen better years and its next farewell may be for good. He asks me why not upgrade to PS4 or even PS5, my reply they don't have College Hoops 2k8. My only hope in this Legacy Reborn is my old and trusty PS3 system holds till eternity.

SANTA CLARA BRONCOS 2007-2008

Last season: 21-10, 10-4 (second in West Coast Conference)
Tournament: Lost to Gonzaga 77-68 in the Finals

Coach: Raymond Rose
Assistant Coach: Al Locklier
Assistant Coach/ Scout: Dane Markusovic

Starters: Senior guard Brody Angley (6.5 points, 6.1 assists), freshman forward Scott Thompson (8.5 points, 5.3 rebounds), junior center John Bryant (9.3 points, 5.8 rebounds), junior guard Calvin Johnson (10.0 points) and freshman forward Darnell Dobson (14.7 points, 3.3 rebounds).

Keep an eye: Freshmen Darnell Dobson and Scott Thompson. Coming out of junior college, Dobson, who leads the team in scoring, was billed as a premier shooter and fans hoped that he would provide something that the rest of the roster could not, which is consistent outside shooting. Big and lanky Thompson, whose whose status for the season was uncertain because of an appendectomy, has range and a good inside game. Dobson started since the season start while Thompson won the right after a battle with Mitch Henke.

Key reserves: Senior forwards Mitch Henke (6.8 points, 3.8 rebounds) and Josh Higgins (5.3 points, 3.2 rebounds), sophomore guard/forward Cedric Latimer (3.2 points) and sophomore guard Zac Tiedeman (3.0 points, 1.1 assists).

Strengths: The Broncos have senior leadership at point guard Brody Angley and a potentially dominant big man in John Bryant. Scott Thompson is expected to learn fast and do a little of everything and provide a third option on offense behind Bryant and Darnell Dobson. The Broncos were well drilled defensively under Dick Davey, and that should continue with Rose.

Weaknesses: The Broncos have big men and bulky middle presence in John Bryant and Josh Higgins but the first 10 games showed of lack of inside tenacity and the team currently languished at the bottom of the rebound pile with a disappointing 28.6 average.

Points could be at a premium on the perimeter, where the Broncos have Calvin Thompson and Darnell Dobson but that’s about it save for some sniping care of forwards Cedric Latimer and Scott Thompson.

Out of their league: The Broncos will host the 4-team Cable Car Classic on December 28 and play the 3-7 Denver Pioneers on opening day. On their final out of conference game on January 7 the Broncos try to avenge an earlier defeat against the San Jose State Spartans.

Outlook: Santa Clara currently at 4-6 is picked to finish fourth in the WCC preseason poll, which seems a bit generous given whom the Broncos must replace. The combination of an inexperienced team and a new coaching staff could make for some rough going. Another 20-win season seems unlikely.

SANTA CLARA CAPTURES THE CABLE CAR CLASSIC
Broncos offense and defense too much for the Niagara Purple Eagles

Dec. 29, Santa Clara CA - After surviving a 66-57 overtime game against the Denver Pioneers yesterday, Santa Clara shifted into high gear with guns blazing to capture the Cable Car Classic with an impressive rout of the Niagara Purple Eagles, 79-59, at the jam-packed Leavey Center.

The Broncos limited the Eagles to only 18 points and 26% field shooting in the first half en route to a 37-18 advantage at the half. The Broncos were threatened once or twice in the second half but each time Darnell Dobson and Calvin Johnson would respond. Dobson, the freshman forward, top scored for 21 points including 3 of 4 from the three-point area. Johnson, who led scoring against the Pioneers with 19 points, chipped in 17 but was a horrendous 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.

The Broncos inside game was a force and a pillar of strength. Big man John Bryant had his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He was 14-12 again the Pioneers. Freshman forward Scott Thompson likewise finished with a double-double 13 points and 13 rebounds, he had a game high 16 boards against the Pioneers. Back up point guard Zac Tiedeman added 10. Niagara hotshot Charron Fisher, marked all afternoon by Dobson and Cedric Latimer, together with Tyrone Lewis led the Purple Eagles with 12 and 11 points respectively. Miroslav Pajevic contributed 8 markers and 11 boards.

SANTA CLARA DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR SAN JOSE STATE
Broncos going to the West Coast Conference on a high note

Jan. 8, Santa Clara CA - Santa Clara avenged their earlier defeat to San Jose State with an 80-50 demolition job in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Leavey Center. The Broncos raced to a 45-16 halftime lead limiting the Spartans to a measly 22% from the field. From thereon, Coach Raymond Rose had the luxury of fielding his back up crew to stand forth defensively and finish the job.

Backup center Josh Higgins took the spotlight finishing a game high 16 points with 8 rebounds while reserve point Zac Tiedeman chipped in 11 while Scott Thompson had another masterful game with 11 points and 7 rebounds, 4 offensive, all in the first half. Tim Pierce was the only Spartan in double figures with 13 points.

Meanwhile the West Coast Basketball Conference gets underway in January 12 with all eight teams scheduled to play. The defending and 9-time champions Gonzaga Bulldogs will play on the road against the Loyola Marymount Lions at the Gerstein Pavilion in Los Angeles while the Pepperdine Waves match up with the Portland Pilots at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu. Next the San Diego Torreros play host to the San Francisco Dons at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. Lastly, the Santa Clara Broncos play the Saint Mary Gaels at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga.
