Georgia State Names Ben McLane as the Starting Quarterback for Final Two Games

Georgia State’s head coach Patrick Cross announced today that Ben McLane is going to be the starting quarterback for the final two games of the season against Arkansas State and South Alabama. Coming into the season, Ben McLane was expected to be the starting quarterback, but Patrick Cross shocked everyone when he chose Ronnie Bell instead due to Bell’s scrambling ability.

Robbie Bell hasn’t had a super impressive season, 147 completions on 228 attempts for a 64% completion percentage with 7 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He’s added just over 300 yards on the ground on 71 runs with 3 rushing touchdowns. This benching comes after a game where he struggled, 4 interceptions with only 1 touchdown and only 118 yards through the air and only 6 yards on the ground. Ben McLane hasn’t recorded any stats on the season, only playing one snap where he handed the ball off when Bell got wind knocked out of him during one game.

However, Cross mentioned this benching wasn’t due to Bell’s play this season and was only to see McLane to end the season and gauge who gets the edge going into next season. He also mentioned that Bell could still see the field occasionally due to his running ability. McLane doesn’t have the same speed as Bell does so expect a bit of a two quarterback system for the Panthers these final two games.

Both of these teams came into the game with the same record, even down to the exact same conference record. So one of these teams were going to win their sixth game of the season and fourth conference game while the other was going to lose their sixth game of the season and third conference game.

The Red Wolves got the ball to start the game, but only a few plays into the game, fumbled the ball and the Panthers recovered. However, a facemask penalty by Georgia State negated the play and gave the ball back to Arkansas State who was able to score a touchdown only a few plays later. The Panthers answered with a touchdown of their own, a 3 yard run by fullback Anthony Hudgins on fourth down. The Red Wolves added another touchdown late in the first quarter.

However, outside of their first drive, Georgia State struggled to put another drive together. But another fumble by Arkansas State was returned to the six yard line by the Panthers and this time there was no penalty to reverse the fumble. Ronnie Bell came into the game and ran it in for a touchdown on the very next play. Not much of note during the third quarter, a touchdown from Arkansas State and a 50 yard run by Georgia State’s Greg Howse was the only things worth noting. The fourth quarter started off with a missed field goal from the Red Wolves. Down by eleven, the Panthers had to score points to keep themselves in the game. After converting a fourth down, the Panthers were able to score a from a run by fullback Anthony Hudgins.

The Red Wolves got the ball back with just over two and a half minutes left in the game, up by four. Georgia State had all their timeouts and had to stop Arkansas State if they had any hope to win the game. After one first down by the Red Wolves, the Panthers were able to stop them and only using one timeout as two of the next three plays after the first down were passes that were knocked away. Georgia State got the ball back with just over two minutes left in the game and with two timeouts. The Panthers were able to move down the field quickly and with eighteen seconds left in the game, Greg Howse was able to run it in for a touchdown, giving Georgia State a three point lead. The Red Wolves still had a chance, with all three of their timeouts, it was just a slim chance. However, after a false start and then a sack, Arkansas State had only one shot left, a hail mary and then laterals, but Georgia State was able to knock the ball down to end the game.

Hudgins barely gets the football into the endzone for his second touchdown on the day.

Georgia State moves to 6-5 on the season, 4-2 in Sun Belt play. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, Georgia State isn’t eligible for postseason play as this season is considered a transitional year as they move to the FBS. However, this is still a great season for the team as no one thought they would win this many games this season. We’ll have to see how they fare next season. They finish off their season next week at home against the 2-8 South Alabama. The Jaguars are coming off a surprising win against UL Monroe. Arkansas State falls to 5-6 on the season, 3-3 in Sun Belt play. They’re also finishing their season next week as they head to Kentucky to visit the 6-5 Western Kentucky. If the Red Wolves can best the Hilltoppers, they become bowl eligible.

Re: HRNolin96's Georgia State Panthers | A NCAA 14 Dynasty

Week 14: South Alabama at Georgia State
Saturday, November 30
Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia

Sloppy, Sloppy End to the Season

South Alabama (2-8 [2-3]) - 15
Georgia State (6-5 [4-2]) - 3

If you showed someone South Alabama’s opening drive of the game and then told them to guess their record, no way they would guess the Jaguars have only had two wins on the season. They were able to move the ball down the field easily, on both runs and passes. South Alabama’s quarterback already had nearly seventy yards on the opening drive alone. However, the Jaguars only were only able to get a field goal for their effort as the Panthers were able to do a goal line stand on third down. After Georgia State missed a field goal, South Alabama was able to add another field goal late in the first quarter. Near the end of the half, Georgia State was able to put points on the board finally with a field goal of their own.

The second half started with a long drive from the Panthers, but unlike the Jaguars in the first half, they missed their field goal. South Alabama was quickly able to move down the field thanks to two long screens that Georgia State quickly missed on, but South Alabama had to settle for another field goal. Midway through the final quarter, South Alabama was finally able to score the game’s first touchdown. It was that kind of game. The Jaguars went for two to go up two touchdowns, but was sacked on the attempt. On the kickoff, Georgia State’s Albert Wilson took it from his endzone to the other endzone, giving the Panthers a touchdown of their own and keeping them in the game. However, a clipping penalty erased the touchdown, putting the ball around Georgia State’s 40 yard line instead. Georgia State wouldn’t score a touchdown all game as South Alabama stopped them on fourth down and was then able to run the clock out.

tumblr_27bf09c693802ebb84d714fae411931c_927f2067_540.jpg
One of the few noteworthy things from the Panthers in this game was this sack by Nermin Delic in the redzone on third down, leaving the Jaguars to have to kick another field goal.

tumblr_139d84d4886860ad8d0d641702d5236b_8aa9ce9f_540.jpg
It took all game, but a touchdown was finally scored in the fourth quarter.

tumblr_41f43001a5fd9abd1b442668e194d225_f0caa847_540.jpg
Knowing a field goal won’t help, Georgia State decided to go for it on fourth down deep in their territory with around two minutes to go in the game. The ball was caught, but Avery Sweeting was stopped just short of the line.

tumblr_6329edf36e3a65006fbc3e1ceec33131_48c2f355_540.jpg
South Alabama’s Jay Jones falls forward for a first down, sealing the win for the visiting team.

After just a terrible start to the season, South Alabama has now won two games. They finish the season next week against UL Lafayette who just lost for the first time this season against UL Monroe. Let’s see if the Jaguars can pull off another surprising win or if their win streak will end at two. For Georgia State’s season overall, they shouldn’t be anything less than happy. The team has far exceeded expectations people had for them entering the FBS level. They finish .500 at 6-6, but with a winning record in Sun Belt Conference play at 4-3. However, we’ll see if this really sloppy end to the season will affect Georgia State’s momentum going into next season.
