Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

Seahawks Free Falling, can they right the ship quickly enough to stave off the 49ers?

November 13, 2023 -

Seattle has dropped two straight, understandably losing to the Ravens in Baltimore but then inexplicably dropping a winnable game at home versus a mediocre Commanders team. They are now only one game up on San Francisco and two games up on the Rams. With the other two capable teams in their division getting hot Seattle will have to turn things around and end this losing streak with a critical stretch of games coming up.

Their next five games: in LA against the Rams this upcoming weekend - basically a critical game to win because a loss brings the Rams within a game of tying Seattle in the division standings and offers the 49ers the opportunity to win their week 11 matchup and tie Seattle for the division lead - Seattle needs to stop the bleeding and end this losing streak right away to remain a serious contender - then at home against the Niners before facing Dak Prescott and the Cowboys in Dallas then against the 49ers again in San Francisco then against the current top team in the NFC in the Eagles. They need to win at least one of the matchups against San Fran to stay ahead in the NFC West.

Seattle's offense is riding the statistical wave of their ridiculous start, they're still 3rd in points scored and 8th in total yards but as the season goes on their rushing and passing numbers are steadily regressing towards middle of the pack numbers. Their pass rush has been respectable but they are hoping that Boye Mafe, who has done an impressive job causing havoc and creating pressure as the season has gone on, can start getting home and coming up with some sacks. Mafe has been a key contributor to the pass rush but has struggled to actually bring down the quarterback. They will be looking for more big plays from him, especially missing Nwosu and possibly Taylor as well on the edge.

If Damien Lewis isn't good to go that will hurt them, they struggle significantly more on offense without him. Their front seven could use Wagner and Nwosu back sooner than later, and they may also be without the services of edge rusher and pass rush specialist Darrell Taylor depending on how his recover goes through the week.

Devon Witherspoon played through his neck injury last week and was still impactful. He's still listed as questionable and they will be hoping he can continue to play as he has already emerged as an impact player on their defense. He leads the team with three interceptions, he has a forced fumble and four tackles for a loss. He has allowed an average of just under 3 receptions per game and his pass defense percentage is a respectable 80%.

LA Rams - Dwayne Woodruff (158-247, 64%, 1,721 Yds, 15 TD, 8 INT, 91.2 QBR)

Recap:

1st Quarter
Seattle gets the ball to start. On third and 7 they get a conversion with a ten yard pass to D.K. Metcalf. On the next set of downs Walker is stuffed for a loss of one, Geno is sacked by OLB Nick Hampton, sack allowed by Abe Lucas, and Geno's 3rd and 17 pass to Metcalf is defended by S Jordan Fuller. Michael Dickson punts it 52 yards and the Rams take over on their own 17. A holding flag on first down sets them back further. On second down Cooper Kupp beats Julian Love with a sharp route but he's tackled by Devin Bush 3 yards short of the first down and Mike Morris bats down the 3rd down pass to force a punt. A screen pass to Cody Thompson went for 40 yards to put Seattle in scoring position. They were stuffed in the next set of downs but Jason Myers came out and hit a 52 yard field goal to give Seattle the first points of the game. Seattle 3, Los Angeles 0. Three straight conversions on third down kept the Rams drive going as they move the ball to the Seattle 25. Another first down on a 7 yard pass to Cooper Kupp moved them to the 15 but after a couple of 2 yard runs and a neutral zone infraction by Seattle DE Myles Adams they faced a 3rd and 1 from the 6.

2nd Quarter
A Dre'Mont Jones defensive holding penalty gave the Rams a first and goal from the 3 and Dwayne Woodruff connected with RB Cam Akers in the end zone for their first score of the game. Los Angeles 7, Seattle 3. Despite big plays to Noah Fant for 17 yards and by DeeJay Dallas for 19 yards the Seahawks next drive fizzled out just outside field goal range and they punted back to the Rams. LA moved the ball with three hard earned first downs before, on a 3rd and 7 just inside Seattle territory, Boye Mafe strip sacked Dwayne Woodruff and recovered the ball at midfield. Seattle picked up a couple first downs on completions to D.K. Metcalf and capped the drive off with a 24 yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett to take advantage of the turnover. Seattle 10, Los Angeles 7. The Rams next drive picked up a first down but was stymied at midfield and they punted to Seattle with 1:33 left in the half. Two first downs had Seattle at their own 42 with 36 seconds left when Will Dissly caught a short pass but fumbled it. The Rams would recover the fumble and take over with under 30 seconds on the clock. It took them only two plays to score a touchdown with a 42 yard completion to Tutu Atwell. Los Angeles 14, Seattle 10.

3rd Quarter
The first possession of the half belonged to the Rams. They drove it down the field, getting 3 receptions from Cooper Kupp for 53 yards on the drive. They scored on a ten yard reception by RB Kyren Williams on a screen pass. Los Angeles 21, Seattle 10. The Seahawks only managed one first down before punting it away from midfield. Nick Bellore made the tackle at the Rams 8 yard line. Cooper Kupp was injured on a first down catch where he gained six yards before being knocked out of bounds by Coby Bryant. Higbee caught a seven yard pass for a first down but that was the only one of the drive and the Rams punted it on fourth and four. Seattle started from their own 29 and Geno Smith picked up a first down on 3rd and 6 with a 12 yard scramble but that was as far as they got and Tommy Hudson tackled Rams returner Josiah Scott for a three yard loss on the return.

4th Quarter
LA started from their 6 yard line. They picked up seven first downs, four of them third down conversions, moving the ball all the way down to the Seattle 3 where Cam Akers would punch it in from three yards out. Los Angeles 28, Seattle 10. Seattle picked up a first down on a 14 yard reception by Tyler Lockett. Then they went for it on a 4th and 11 and threw a screen pass to D.K. Metcalf. He was stopped 8 yards short and the ball was turned over on downs. Seattle's defense allowed one first down but then stepped up with Devin Bush making the key tackle on 3rd down to stop Kyren Williams five yards short of the first down and force a punt. The Seahawks started at their 20 with 4:33 to go. Geno Smith threw three straight incompletions but on 4th down he connected with Tyler Lockett for 36 yards to stay alive. First downs from 15 and 21 yard completions to D.K. moved the ball to the one. After a five yard loss on a screen to Metcalf Geno would find RB Zach Charbonnet open in the end zone for a six yard score with 2:49 left. Los Angeles 28, Seattle 17. The Rams recovered the onside kick but were stuffed on three straight runs and Seattle used up their timeouts. Ethan Evans punted it out of bounds at the Seattle 1 at the 2-minute warning. Smith and Lockett hooked up for a 15 yard completion to get out of the shadow of their own goal posts but Charles Cross allowed a sack by S John Johnson on first down and Seattle was unable to make those yards up, with Geno's 4th and 11 pass to DeeJay Dallas being dropped to turn the ball over on downs at their 15. The Rams ran out the clock to claim victory.

Final Score: Los Angeles 28, Seattle 17.

Dwayne Woodruff was the player of the game, going 26-37 for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns. Seattle failed to generate any sort of run game, Kenneth Walker only carried the ball 8 times and gained 0 yards in his worst game of the season. Kyren Williams ran it 23 times for the Rams for 77 yards and also caught two passes for 19 yards and a touchdown. Devon Witherspoon was hampered by injury enough that the coaching staff kept him out of the game, only giving him a couple plays before deciding to sit him.

San Francisco - Brock Purdy (115-168, 68.5%, 1209 Yds, 11 TD, 4 INT, 101.0 QBR)

Seattle - Geno Smith (217-329, 66.0%, 2586 Yds, 23 TD, 5 INT, 106.8 QBR)

Preview:

This is a tale of two teams going opposite directions. Seattle started the season on fire but has dropped three straight. San Fran has won 3 of their last 4 to climb their way into a tie with Seattle atop the NFC West. This game and their rematch two weeks late in San Francisco will likely decide the division.

The 49ers have successfully executed a bend don't break defense this year. They are the seventh worst defense in the league in yards allowed but the 5th best in the league in points allowed. They also lead the league in sacks. Their vaunted pass rush is led by Nick Bosa and his 11 sacks through 10 games this year. Safety Tashaun Gipson has 4 interceptions.

The Seahawks offense is led by Geno Smith. He has two prime targets in Lockett and Metcalf but tight ends Noah Fant and Will Dissly and slot receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba also figure into the offense. Geno has thrown for 23 touchdowns this season and Seattle is 3rd in the NFL in points scored per game. They have allowed the seventh fewest sacks against per game but recently young tackles Charles Cross and Abe Lucas have struggled and they are going to have to contain Nick Bosa somehow if Geno is going to be able to sling it to his weapons. They run by committee, with Kenneth Walker III their number one and most dynamic back but also their streakiest. He needs to get going early in this game for them to have success.

Seattle's defense has been improving over the season in getting pressure, led by a rapidly progressing Boye Mafe and getting a high volume of effective snaps out of rotational edge rusher Tyreke Smith. Their most exciting player is rookie Devon Witherspoon but he is battling a neck injury and barely got any snaps last game. They're expecting him to play a lot more this game and he's reportedly been feeling better this week. Safety Jamal Adams has been all over the field making tackles and has been key to keeping this defense together in the absence of injured captain Bobby Wagner.

The 49ers offense has hardly been healthy all year but they finally have Purdy, McCaffrey, Kittle, Samuel and Aiyuk all good to go at the same time. Purdy is a very efficient passer and is just getting back into his rhythm after returning from injury two weeks ago. Elijah Mitchell has been an X-factor for them so far, making the most of his carries and enabling Kyle Shanahan to keep McCaffrey fresh.

The difference in this game may come down to whether Charles Cross and Abe Lucas can protect Geno Smith from Nick Bosa and company. If Geno can't find his rhythm and move the ball the 49ers are going to get ahead and have no problem staying ahead. Seattle is going to have to rely on Devon Witherspoon or Boye Mafe to make some big plays in key moments on defense but if they can slow down this Niners offense with all their weapons and Geno can run this Seahawks attack the way he has all year this should be a very close game.

Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

Week 12, San Francisco 49ers (6-4) @ Seattle Seahawks (6-4)

Weather: Rain, 43 degrees, 5 mph wind

Recap:

1st Quarter
Seattle starts with the ball and their first play from scrimmage is a 36 yard bomb to Tyler Lockett. After the 49ers pushed them into 3rd and 9 Geno connected on a short pass to Metcalf and D.K. picked up the first down yardage and then some, gaining 16 on the play. A ten yard pass to Will Dissly on second down moved the Seahawks to the Niners 9 yard line for first and goal. After Kenneth Walker carried it to the five Geno ran a playaction on second down and dumped it off to Metcalf who ran it into the end zone for the TD. Seattle 7, San Francisco. The 49ers marched down the field on their first drive of the game, with a 10 yard playaction pass to Deebo Samuel for a touchdown capping off a 12 play, 73 yard drive. San Francisco 7, Seattle 7. A 42 yard completion to Will Dissly started the Seahawks drive off on the right foot. Four plays later Geno threw a 16 yard touchdown to Dissly. Seattle 14, San Francisco 7. The Seahawks defense allows only one first down before getting the first stop of the game, forcing a punt that is downed at the Seattle 13.

2nd Quarter
A couple runs by Kenneth Walker move the ball to the Seahawks 33. On 3rd and 4 OLB Dre Greenlaw bats down a pass intended for D.K. Metcalf and Seattle sends out the punt team. Michael Dickson's punt is blocked by Chris Conley and San Francisco's Ben Niemann recoverd the ball at the Seattle 32. Two runs by McCaffrey for 16 yards and an 11 yard pass to Kittle sets the Niners up at the Seattle 5. Elijah Mitchell carries it for three yards to get a fresh set of downs at the two. McCaffrey's outside run is stopped in the backfield by Jon Rhattigan. On second and goal from the four Purdy throws for George Kittle but is intercepted in the end zone by LB Devin Bush. The Seahawks drive it all the way to the San Francisco 19, in large part due to a 42 yard completion to Noah Fant, where they find themselves in 3rd and 8. On a playaction pass Geno targets Cody Thompson but S Talana Hufanga intercepts the pass and returns it to the Seattle 28. San Fran couldn't do anything with the momentous turnover and after a three and out they punted it back to Seattle and Deejay Dallas fair caught the punt at the 32. After a couple first downs off a Kenneth Walker 13 yard run and a 15 yard completion to Nick Bellore Seattle had a first and 10 at the Niners 27. Smith threw a short pass to D.K. for five yards then on second down he found Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the end zone for a 22 yard touchdown. Seattle 21, San Francisco 7. With 2:55 to go in the half the 49ers took over and moved the ball downfield, getting a chunk play on a key third down with a 38 yard completion to Deebo Samuel, making it all the way to the Seattle 7 before they ran out of time and kicked a field goal. Seattle 21, San Francisco 10.

3rd Quarter
San Francisco starts the half with the ball but goes three and out. After a 14 yard return by DeeJay Dallas Seattle starts their drive from their own 44. After getting a first down by penalty and another first down on a 15 yard pass to Metcalf they were stopped on 3rd and 6 at the 32 with a rare Lockett drop on third down. Jason Myers came out to kick the field goal but just missed, hitting the left upright. The 49ers take over at their own 39. They convert a third down to Brandon Aiyuk to move the chains. A couple runs by McCaffrey earn another firrst down. A 20 yard playaction pass to Chris Conley moves the ball to the 13. On 3rd and one Purdy runs a sneak for 2 yards. Two consecutive McCaffrey runs punch it in for the score. Purdy finds Kittle for the successful two point conversion. Seattle 21, San Francisco 18. Seattle goes three and out and punts it back to the 49ers. After a first down to Samuel the Niners are stopped and forced to punt. They pin the Seahawks on their own 9. On 3rd and 5 Geno finds Tyler Lockett open at the sidelines for 17 yards to keep the drive going.

4th Quarter
On a 3rd and 3 from their own 38 Geno Smith completed a 16 yard pass to Cody Thompson to move the sticks. An 11 yard run by DeeJay Dallas gave them another first down. At the Niners 29 they were in 3rd and 4 and Geno connected with D.K. for 7 yards and the first down. On their next set of downs they found themselves in 3rd and 6 and handed it off to Dallas who fought for 6 yards and just got the first down. On 3rd and 5 Geno scrambled for a 7 yard touchdown to extend the lead. Seattle 28, San Francisco 18. The Niners started their next series with a seven yard pass to Deebo Samuel but Riq Woolen popped the ball loose and Devin Bush recovered the ball for Seattle. The Seahawks slogged their way down to the San Francisco 4 yard line but on 3rd and goal DeeJay Dallas only got one yard so Myers came out to kick the field goal. Chris Conley blocked the kick after Chris Stoll sent a poor snap back that took an extra second to place. George Odum recovered the ball for San Francisco on their 21. An offensive holding penalty set them back but a 16 yard pass to Aiyuk and then a defensive holding penalty on Quandre Diggs gave San Fran a 1st and 10. Elijah Mitchell caught a seven yard pass for a first down at the two minute warning, moving the ball to midfield. Another defensive holding call on Seattle gifted them a first down but the defense would push the Niners to 3rd and 6. Brock Purdy completed a pass to Aiyuk for 22 yards to keep the drive going. A screen pass to McCaffrey for 4 yards gave them a first and goal at the 8 and they had to use their first timeout. A bizarre call to run the ball led to the 49ers having to use their second timeout after gaining only two yards. Brock Purdy was forced to scramble on second down for five yards and the 49ers used their final timeout with 31 seconds left. After an incomplete pass it was 4th and goal and Kyle Shanahan elected to take the field goal. Seattle 28, San Francisco 21. The onside kick failed and Seattle took a knee to end the game.

Final Score: Seattle 28, San Francisco 21.

Geno Smith was named the player of the game, going 23-29 for 295 yards, 3 TD and an INT. Will Dissly caught 5 passes for 77 yards and a TD. Kenneth Walker had a good game, gaining 78 yards on the ground in 17 carries. Christian McCaffrey was limited to 61 rushing yards and 6 receiving yards by the Seahawks defnse. Deebo Samuel caught 9 passes for 112 yards and a TD in a standout performance for San Francisco. Brock Purdy had a mediocre game, finishing with an 82.5 QB Rating. Chris Conley was a special teams monster for the Niners, blocking a punt and a field goal. The offensive lines deserve an award, as neither team allowed a sack all game. Seahawks G Damien Lewis was 5/7 on key run block opportunities.

Post Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

John's Journal

Dec 2nd, 2023 -

Well we took care of some business this week, I decided to re-sign linebacker and special teams specialist Jon Rhattigan for another year. He won't cost us much and fills a roster spot that I won't have to spend time looking for in free agency. With a lot of expiring contracts to deal with this year I wanted to get some minor stuff out of the way so I can focus on the big decisions in the spring.

Speaking of some of those big decisions, I've pretty much concluded we won't be bringing Noah Fant back. With Dissly on the books for another year at a $9 Million plus cap cost we just can't afford to pay another tight end over $10 Million like he's asking. And his agent says he wants a bonus of $5.5 Million as well, which for the long term deal he's asking for limits us a lot as far as roster flexibility down the road. We're not even in the same ballpark with him so although he's been very good at his job all year we can't afford to keep him around. I'm strongly considering re-signing Parkinson because of this. He'll be more affordable and wants a shorter deal. I do wonder if his current injury is an aberration or the new norm for him. I don't want to sink money into an injury prone TE2. I'm gonna think on this one a bit more but if I do decide to extend him for a year for $4.58 M it would be one less thing on my plate this offseason.

I have committed to Damien Lewis and his agent, although some of the details are still being ironed out, and we will be keeping him around for 3 more seasons. He's proven to be a key part of our O-Line and with a $3.1M Bonus he wants a salary that will put the cap number at $8.75M next year, going up to $10.5M against the cap by the final year of the deal. There's one piece of my interior offensive line locked in. I'm thinking of letting Phil Haynes and maybe center Evan Brown walk and looking for upgrades in free agency or the draft.

I'm told Nick Bellore is still unhappy with his playing time. Not much we can do about that. At least he's being professional about it and he's under contract for another season as well. If he's not too toxic with his dissatisfaction I'd like to keep him around. He's a valuable piece on special teams and a useful fullback.

This next game tomorrow should be interesting. The Cowboys give up the most passing yards in the NFL, should be good opportunity for Geno to feast as long as he can avoid turnovers. Dallas leads the league in turnover differential at +11. DaRon Bland is dangerous as a corner with great hands and instincts and Dak basically never throws interceptions. Their defense is strong against the run. Hopefully we can buck that trend and keep a balanced attack. They are second in the league in scoring so our defense is going to have to be up to the task. Pete and I have talked about Bobby who is capable of playing but we are keeping him inactive because the doctors say there's a moderate risk of re-injury and I want him back for the rest of the season once he's good. Micah Parsons is having an off year but he's certainly still dangerous and we need to be careful of him coming off the edge and disrupting Geno's rhythm. The Niners are playing the Eagles this week and the Rams are going up against the Browns, so it's a very possible outcome that they both lose and if so we need to take this game and solidify our playoff chances.

Dallas - Dak Prescott (264-372, 71.0%, 2866 Yds, 29 TD, 3 INT, 115.9 QBR)

Recap:

1st Quarter
The Seahawks started with the ball. First play from scrimmage was a completion to Will Dissly for 9 yards. On second down the reverse to Jaxon Smith-Njigba was good for 2 yards and the first down but more importantly Geno Smith went down with what looks like a serious injury and he would miss the rest of the game. Drew Lock took over but the next three plays went for -4 yards total and Dickson came out to punt it away. Starting their first series of the game from their own 14, Dallas drove it 86 yards in 13 plays to score, finishing it off with a 5 yard TD pass to Michael Gallup. Tony Pollard had 47 rushing yards on the drive. Dallas 7, Seattle 0. The Seahawks would go three and out despite an 8 yard Kenneth Walker run and Dickson's punt was downed at the Dallas 11. The Cowboys moved methodically down the field, getting two key third down conversions from Tony Pollard and making six first downs while moving the ball to the Seattle 11 by the end of the quarter.

2nd Quarter
On 3rd down it was Tony Pollard again with the five yard run for first down before being forced out of bounds at the one by Devin Bush. On the next play Pollard ran it in from the one. Dallas 14, Seattle 0. The first first down with Drew Lock at the helm came by penalty when LB Devin Harper was flagged for Defensive Holding. A 22 yard run by Kenneth Walker moved the chains a second time. Seattle would get one more first down on a 6 yard pass to Noah Fant but they were stopped with D.K. Metcalf losing five yards on a screen pass on 3rd down. Jason Myers came out and hit the 51 yard field to get the Seahawks on the board. Dallas 14, Seattle 3. The Cowboys start their next drive from their own 34. They go for it on a 4th and one at their 43 and get it with an off-tackle run by Pollard. A couple passing first downs moves them into Seattle territory then on a 3rd and 3 it's Tony Pollard again with the four yard run for first down. On second down Pollard would run for seven yards and another first down at the Seahawks eight yard line. Prescott connected with TE Jake Ferguson in the end zone but Pollard looked like he sustained an injury on the play. The Seahawks took the ball at their 33. On 2nd and 6 Drew Lock completed a 34 yard playaction pass to Dissly but Trevon Diggs stripped the ball and Micah Parsons recovered it on the Dallas 29. Dak Prescott moved his team back down the field, throwing first downs to TE Jake Ferguson, TE Sean McKeon and WR Michael Gallup as they marched down the the Seattle 3. A holding penalty on first and goal pushed them back and on 3rd and 8 Prescott was sacked by Boye Mafe as the Seahawks defense held the Cowboys to a field goal. Dallas 24, Seattle 3. After DeeJay Dallas returned the kickoff to the Seattle 11 the Seahawks went 3 and out and punted the ball away. KaVontae Turpin brought it all the way back 76 yards to paydirt for the Cowboys. Dallas 31, Seattle 3.

3rd Quarter
The Cowboys took the ball but the Seahawks defense finally made a stop, forcing the Cowboys to go three and out. The Seahawks earned a first down on their next series but on 3rd and 4 Drew Lock was sacked by DE Neville Gallimore for a loss of 15 yards to force another punt. The Cowboys put backup QB Cooper Rush in to rest Prescott since their lead was so large and with Tony Pollard banged up it was RB Deuce Vaughn slicing and dicing the Seahawks defense, picking up two first downs. Rush completed an 11 yard pass to Brandin Cooks to move the ball to the Seattle 38. On the next third down, with three yards to go Cooper Rush looked for Cooks again but CB Coby Bryant stepped in front of the pass for the interception at the Seahawks 27 yard line. The Seahawks offense was unable to move the ball and Dickson came out for another punt after three plays. The Cowboys drove it down to the Seattle 33 but they went for it on 4th and 5 and Jon Rhattigan made the tackle one yard past the line of scrimmage. The Seahawks offense went three and out once again, and Dallas' offense followed suit in their next series.

4th Quarter
Seattle managed a first down with a 9 yard completion to Dissly but the very next play Drew Lock was sacked by DE Chauncey Golston and DT Mazi Smith for a loss of seven yards. On 3rd and 27 Lock threw to Metcalf but CB DaRon Bland intercepted the pass and ran it 24 yards for the defensive touchdown. Dallas 38, Seattle 3. Following the pick six Seattle again went three and out. Dallas returned the favour and Seattle got the ball back at their own 32 with 11 minutes to play. They picked up three first downs through the air before they were stopped at the Dallas 31. Jason Myers kicked the 48 yard field goal successfully. Dallas 38, Seattle 6. After another Dallas three and out Seattle got the ball at their own 36 with five and a half minutes left in the game. They couldn't manage a first down and on 4th and 13 Michael Dickson punted it away. Dallas ran the clock to the two minute warning before punting it back to the Seahawks. After one more three and out Seattle punted it back and Dallas ran the rest of the clock out.

Final Score: Dallas 38, Seattle 6.

Prescott was effective as long as he was in the game, going 21-25 for 196 yards and 2 TD. Tony Pollard ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Seattle couldn't move the ball and didn't stick with the ground game. Lock threw for only 122 yards and an interception, going 15-31. Will Dissly had 4 catches for 55 yards but also lost a key fumble early. Michael Gallup had 10 receptions for the Cowboys, gaining 87 yards and scoring a touchdown. KaVontae Turpin scored a touchdown and had 101 yards on 4 punt returns for Dallas and DaRon Bland had a pick six. Michae Dickson punted 9 times for Seattle, averaging 48.3 yards per punt and pinning Dallas inside their 20 three times.
