Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

Geno Smith done for the season - are the Seahawks?

December 9th, 2023 -

Two plays into their Week 13 matchup against the Cowboys Seattle fans were horrified to see Geno Smith go down on what should've been a routine play. He was in significant distress and was taken to the locker room for further evaluation immediately and not long after it was reported that he would not be returning to the game. The offense guided by backup Drew Lock was an unmitigated disaster and Seattle looked almost entirely incapable of moving the ball without Geno Smith, even against the league's worst passing defense. The only touchdown Lock threw was to the other team when DaRon Bland snagged one of his throws and ran it back for the pick six.

The injury report is in and it is not good news for Geno Smith or the Seahawks. In the midst of an almost MVP calibre season, Geno will miss the rest of the year with a torn lower leg ligament. The Seahawks have placed him on injured reserve. He finishes the year with 2,890 yards passing, 26 TD, 6 INT, a 67.1% completion rate and a 108.7 QB Rating. As of now he sat at seventh in the NFL in passing yards, eighth in completion percentage (minimum 100 completions), second in passing TDs, ninth in interception ratio (minimum 200 attempts) and second in QB Rating (minimum 200 attempts). Seattle will hope he makes a full recovery and is ready for next season.

In the meantime, the Seahawks are still embroiled in a tight race for the NFC West and can't afford to fall apart now. They went out and signed veteran Carson Wentz to replace Smith on the roster. Wentz and Lock competed in practice during the week for the starting spot but at the end of the week it was Wentz who was designated the starter for the critical Week 14 matchup against the 49ers. He is rusty and will take some time to fully grasp Shane Waldron's offense but the veteran has picked things up incredibly fast and worked very hard and just looks like the better QB compared to Lock. Hopefully his experience can help him and this offense figure things out in a hurry with the division in the balance. Wentz has struggled lately, with his most recent stop being in Washington where he was 2-5 with the worst TD-INT ratio of his career since his rookie season and a QB Rating of only 80.2. He has been hampered quite a bit by injuries lately and is counting on the extra time off this year to have enabled him to be fresher and more fully recovered and durable.

San Francisco - Brock Purdy (162-248, 65.3%, 1713 Yds, 13 TD, 6 INT, 92.7 QBR)

Recap:

1st Quarter
San Francisco starts with the ball. They move it downfield steadily, facing only one third down on the drive, a 3rd and 9 at their own 40, which they convert on a 16 yard pass to FB Kyle Juszczyk. They would work themselves all the way down to second and goal at the one before Elijah Mitchell punches it in, running behind guard Spencer Burford. San Francisco 7, Seattle 0. The Seahawks looked dangerous on their first possession, with Wentz and Smith-Njigba hooking up a couple times for 49 total yards, and they moved the ball to the 49ers 16 when on 3rd and 4 Kenny McIntosh dropped a pass and Jason Myers would have to come out and kick the 33 yard field goal. San Francisco 7, Seattle 3. The 49ers next drive struggled. They got a first down on 3rd and 7 with a completion to Deebo Samuel but on the next play Bobby Wagner announced he was back with a sack that moved San Fran back 7 yards. They worked themselves out of that hole to a 4th and 3 on the Seattle 37 where they elected to go for it but Purdy was sacked again, this time by CB Tre Brown. Seattle took over but couldn't do anything with their favourable field position, with a screen pass to Metcalf on 3rd and 3 being sniffed out by LB Fred Warner and S Tashaun Gipson for a 3 yard loss. Dickson's punt bounced into the end zone for a touchback.

2nd Quarter
The 49ers made a couple third down conversions to move the ball into Seattle territory but on 3rd and 8 at the 45 Christian McCaffrey dropped the pass from Brock Purdy and they punted it back to Seattle. After a first down by penalty and a first down passing the Seahawks drive would fizzle out when Carson Wentz's pass to D.K. Metcalf was knocked down by LB Dre Greenlaw. Both teams went three and out before the 49ers managed to move the ball on a drive for a couple first downs but they were stopped on 3rd and 10 when Quandre Diggs knocked away a pass intended for WR Ray-Ray McCloud. Seattle was pinned deep in their territory when the punt was downed at their six. On 2nd and long Waldron called a reverse to Jaxon Smith-Njigba that gained 26 yardsd and some breathing room. With a first down pass to Metcalf that moved the ball to midfield it was looking like the Seahawks might have a drive and some momentum going finally but Wentz's short pass to Lockett on first down was picked off by Charvarius Ward who took it to the house for the 50 yard pick-six. San Francisco 14, Seattle 3. Seattle's first play after the kickoff was a 39 yard run by DeeJay Dallas to get them into field goal range. A couple straight incompletions brought the field goal unit out there and Jason Myers nailed the 48 yard kick through the uprights. San Francisco 14, Seattle 6.

3rd Quarter
Seattle would start with the ball but an incompletion, a sack by Nick Bosa and Clelin Ferrell where Wentz fumbled the ball but recovered his own fumble and then another incompletion when Wentz was hurried by Nick Bosa left them punting after a three and out. The 49ers took over at their own 45 and drove the 55 yards in nine plays, converting a 4th and 4 along the way when Christian McCaffrey ran it for 16 yards. McCaffrey would also be the one to punch it into the end zone, running behind pulling guard Spencer Burford for the one yard score. San Francisco 21, Seattle 6. Seattle would work the ball downfield on their next drive, getting a key third down conversion to Jaxon Smith-Njigba and also getting first down receptions from Metcalf and Lockett before stalling out in the red zone. Jason Myers would knock the chip shot 25 yard field goal through but a missed opportunity for the Seahawks to draw within one score. San Francisco 21, Seattle 9. Brock Purdy threw first downs to Ray-Ray McCloud and Deebo Samuel before two penalties pushed them back and forced them into punting. On the punt return Zach Charbonnet appeared to be injured but Seahawks trainers said he would be able to stay in the game. Seattle picked up a first down on an 18 yard reception by Tyler Lockett and another one via penalty. On third and 5 from the 49ers 44 Carson Wentz's short swing pass to DeeJay Dallas was jumped by S Tashaun Gipson who came down with the drive ending interception. San Francisco's first set of downs saw them go to 3rd and 8 where Brock Purdy completed a short pass to McCaffrey who did the rest with his legs, earning a first down at the Seattle 42.

4th Quarter
The 49ers couldn't muster another first down in that series and Mitch Wishnowsky kicked a high, short punt that was fair caught by DeeJay Dallas at the Seattle 11. Fred Wagner was in punt coverage and looked to be injured on the play. Some big plays moved the Seahawks down the field as Carson Wentz gained a first down with a ten yard scramble, threw for another when he completed a swing pass to Kenneth Walker that gained fifteen yards and had a 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalty tacked onto the end of it and then completed a 19 yard pass to Smith-Njigba on the playaction to move the ball into the red zone. On 3rd and 10 Wentz connected with Metcalf for 9 yards and on 4th and 1 at the San Francisco 7 with just over nine minutes to play in the game Seattle sent out the field goal unit in a bit of a head scratching call. Myers was good from 24 yards. San Francisco 21, Seattle 12. The 49ers executed a long and patient 14 play drive that saw them run the ball all but one play, burn the clock all the way to the two minute warning, burn two of Seattle's timeouts and punch it into the endzone from the two with Christian McCaffrey running behind who else but Spencer Burford. They would fail the two point conversion. San Francisco 27, Seattle 12. After a brutal return by Dee Eskridge left them starting at their own 7 yard line Seattle's two minute offense went to work. Wentz completed three straight first down passes to Dissly, Metcalf and TE Tommy Hudson before he threw an incompletion and took a sack on a missed block by Walker. A 12 yard pass to Will Dissly got them to a makeable 4th and 6 but also forced them to use their final timeout. They were gifted a first down when DT Arik Armstead was flagged for Illegal Use of Hands but ran out of time on the next set of downs.

Final Score: San Francisco 27, Seattle 12.

Christian McCaffrey was the player of the game with 18 carries for 81 yards and 2 TDs and 7 catches for 63 yards. Deebo Samuel caught 7 passes for 58 yards and also had 2 carries for 18 yards. Carson Wentz struggled in his first start for the Seahawks, going 24-41 for 236 Yds and 2 INT. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had possibly the best game of his career with 5 receptions for 81 yards and a 26 yard run on a reverse. Kenneth Walker III ran the ball 10 times for only 18 yards. Nick Bosa was a wrecking ball on the defensive line, pressuring the QB 8 times and forcing a fumble on his half sack.

Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

Week 14 NFL Storylines

Miami is back in the running after three game winning streak
The Dolphins looked like they were going to sputter on this season but after winning three weeks in a row they're right there in the conversation for an AFC Wild Card spot. Jaylen Waddle had an impressive 223 receiving yards in their 36-3 beatdown of the Titans.

The AFC North is a blood bath right now
With three teams tied with an 8-5 record the Bengals are the worst team in the division at 7-6, which must be frustrating when they've put together an impressive season overall without star QB Joe Burrow. Graham Meng is no Joe Burrow but he is keeping Cincinnati alive with his play. He leads all QBs (with 200 or more attempts) in yards per pass attempt (8.24). Ten interceptions through seven games isn't pretty but he's been getting wins. The Steelers have looked solid since losing their first three games of the year, going 8-2 since then despite constant uncertainty at the QB position. Mason Rudolph was playing good football but he's been hurt and Trubisky has been getting them by. Somehow they have the record they do despite being tied for 27th in the NFL in points scored and 27th in total yards on offense. All but one of their victories this season have been by one score or less. The Ravens have won five of their last six, and the one loss in there was by one point to the Chargers. The Ravens are top 5 in the NFL in points scored and points allowed. That year end matchup between Baltimore and Pittsburgh could have huge playoff implications the way things are going.

QB Controversy brewing in Cleveland?
The Browns have gone 3-5 since starting the year with five straight wins. They still lead the division based off tiebreakers and they lead the league in total yards and passing yards per game. But they haven't been able to close games out and after their loss to Jacksonville where Deshaun Watson was benched after building up a 28-0 deficit only to watch P.J. Walker lead an impressive comeback attempt as they outscored the Jags 18-3 in the second half Kevin Stefanski was answering questions about his quarterbacks post game. He maintains that Watson is their starter and it was an off week and a mid game decision that he felt gave them the best chance to win but Watson is their starter and gives them the best chance to win week in and week out. No matter who's been throwing him the ball Amari Cooper has been racking up the yards with 1,478 so far this season to lead the NFL by a significant margin.

Would Justin Fields be getting more press if the Bears were successful?
The much maligned young QB has quietly been putting together a decent season and looking like Lamar Jackson-lite, which is hardly an insult. He's notably cleaned up his turnovers, throwing only 6 interceptions while passing for 19 touchdowns and rushing for 5 touchdowns and 804 yards (10th in the NFL currently). If the Bears were in a playoff spot he would probably be receiving a lot more accolades in the media but despite his solid season Chicago has continued to struggle to win games, going 4-9 so far this year.

MVP Chatter
Lamar Jackson's incredible dual threat season probably keeps him the frontrunner for MVP, he's fifth in the NFL in passing yards and 8th in rushing yards, throwing for 22 touchdowns and running for another 8. His closest competitor right now would be the man who has more passing TDs than Lamar has passing and rushing, Dak Prescott has thrown for 3,332 yards (3rd in NFL), has completed 72.4% of his passes (1st among QBs with minimum 200 attempts), has 34 TDs to only 3 INTs, leads the league in QB Rating with an incredible 119.3 and is running the highest scoring offense in the league. Jared Goff leads the NFL in passing yards at 3,531, has completed 69.3% of his throws and has 20 passing touchdowns. He leads the most efficient offense in the NFL at 6.01 yards per play. He could be a darkhorse if Detroit gets hot and makes a late season run to the playoffs, which is still a possibility in the weaker NFC.

Ja'Marr Chase could be the most reliable receiver in the league
Though his season was interrupted by injury, Chase is averaging almost 100 yards and a touchdown per game. Almost more impressive is that he is the only receiver in the top 50 to have 0 drops so far in the season. Despite catching passes from backup Graham Meng for much of the year Chase has shown his quality as a number one receiver and has been a big part of making Meng look surprisingly good under center for the Bengals.

Re: Seattle Seahawks Dynasty (FOF9)

Week 14 NFL Storylines ctd...

The year of the Safety
Safeties are leading the league in tackles. The increased prevalance of pass-first offenses led by talented quarterbacks seems to have the safety position more critical than ever. Safeties have to be versatile, sometimes dropping into coverage, sometimes the last line of defense, sometimes blitzing to surprise the QB and sometimes stepping up to help against the run. Derwin James has been all of those and excelled for the Chargers this season. He leads the NFL in interceptions and tackles, an incredibly rare feat.

Von Miller's Resurgence in Buffalo
Miller has been showing no ill effects from the injuries he was recovering from in the offseason, leading the NFL in sacks with 12 in 13 games and playing a huge role in Buffalo's dominant season.

Nick Bosa leading 49ers powerful defense
Bosa leads the NFL in pressures with 54 and is tied for second in sacks. Niners defensive coordinator Steve Wilks can count on his team getting pressure with a four man rush because of how dominant Bosa continues to be.

Will Justin Herbert be good to go for key divisonal tilt between Chargers and Raiders?
After sustaining what looked to be a fairly significant knee injury Justin Herbert is listed as questionable with a sprained PCL. He hasn't been participating yet in practices but Brandon Staley is holding out hope his star quarterback will be able to play in Vegas in a game that could decide the AFC West. If he can't play then rookie backup Max Duggan will have to go. Duggan has attempted only 18 passes all year. The Chargers will need to rely more than ever on Derwin James and his opportunistic defense, especially with key defensive pieces Khalil Mack and J.C. Jackson both not expected to play.

NFC Wild Card Race is wide open
Whoever doesn't take the NFC East between Dallas and Philadelphia will have the first wild card spot but the other two are very much up for grabs. Currently the 49ers and Buccaneers sit in the wild card spots at 7-6 but the Rams, Sainst, Lion and Commanders are all knocking on the door with 6-7 records. The Seahawks lead the NFC West on a tiebreaker but they could falter in the coming weeks with starting QB Geno Smith out and a game against the NFC leading Eagles coming up.

Third string QB Jake Haener comes up clutch for Saints to keep them in the playoff hunt
When Derek Carr went down with an injury in a 20-17 loss to the Falcons it looked like the Saints were probably done, with backup Jameis Winston also injured and a 4-7 record to work with. All third stringer Jake Haener did was step in and win two straight games, most recently against Carolina with a last minute game winning drive. In two games he was 57-84 (67.9% completion rate) for 608 yards, 4 TD and only one interception. Derek Carr is listed as probable and will likely be back under center for their game against the Giants but what an impressive two game run for Haener.

Defending champs could be done after loss to Bills
Josh Allen was healthy for Buffalo as they went into Kansas City and took home the W, 28-14. Allen threw for 3 TDs and was 20-25. Mahomes had a solid and safe game as he has often done all season and he continues his impressive run of not throwing an interception all year, now through 377 pass attempts. Despite his ability to protect the ball Kansas City couldn't win early in the season and just weren't explosive offensively. The loss to Buffalo drops them to 5-8 and could be the death blow in the hyper competitive AFC.

Rookie QB C.J. Stroud puts in best performance of season
The Texans may have a losing record but their future is bright with C.J. Stroud at the helm. After a slow start to the season he has come around and is looking more and more comfortable in the NFL. In their 34-25 victory over the Jets he threw for 301 yards, 4 TD and an INT and had a QB Rating of 127.6. Stroud is establishing himself as a legitimate starting QB in this league, something some first rounders never do, but he looks to have potential to one day become an elite passer in the NFL. He needs to improve his decision making and accuracy but he already has that big league arm and runs a sharp two minute offense. He's already become a fan favourite in Houston and as he accumulates experience in the NFL he should only get better.

Seattle - Carson Wentz (24-41, 58.5%, 236 Yds, 2 INT, 54.5 QBR)

Preview:

Seattle will be in tough against the top team in the NFC. The Eagles will dominate in the trenches. They have allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL while also leading the league in sacks per game on defense. They have the top rushing attack in the league but their passing offense is sub par. Philadelphia has managed to sustain their dominance of the line of scrimmage without two of their starting offensive linemen as Landon Dickerson and Jordan Mailata are both out for the season. Seattle has struggled to consistently generate pressure all season and though Boye Mafe has improved all year and leads their defense in sacks with six he is being pushed out of his comfort zone into playing some 3-4 DE with the injuries to starting DEs Mario Edwards and now Dre'Mont Jones. The Seahawks are without edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu still and both Tyreke Smith and Darrell Taylor are still banged though both should play. Seattle has done a surprisingly decent job protecting their QB with two inexperienced starting tackles but they have been slipping a bit lately and Carson Wentz may need more time as he continues to settle into this offense.

It does look like Pete Carroll will again go with Carson Wentz as the starter. In his first game all season Wentz struggled, throwing two interceptions and finishing with an abysmal 54.5 QB Rating. The Seahawks are confident he will look better this week with another week of practice under his belt and the coaching staff believe he is the best QB they have at the moment. He will have two great targets in Metcalf and Lockett, one of the best one two punches at WR in the league with a combined 1721 yards receiving. Will Dissly is also starting to look like a legitimate top ten tight end in this league. He is 7th in tight ends for receiving yards. (Albeit some of the premium TEs such as George Kittle and Travis Kelce have missed a lot of time due to injuries). Kenneth Walker III has been inconsistent from game to game and Shane Waldron hasn't always stuck to the run game but Walker is 12th in the NFL in rushing yardage regardless. Jaxon Smith-Njigba showed some good chemistry with Wentz in their first game together and Seattle would love to see that continue. Smith-Njigba is a talented receiver who hasn't gotten as many touches as you would like to see in this offense so far but he's coming along nicely the past few games. If Wentz struggles against the team that drafted him it won't be for a lack of weapons.

If there's one area Seattle looks to have an advantage in this game it's defending the pass. They've allowed the fifth fewest passing yards per game and Philadelphia's air attack is the second worst in the league. Devon Witherspoon is fully healthy and hopefully he is back to his impactful self after being much less noticeable than usual lately. Nickel back Coby Bryant has 2 interceptions on the season and has a knack for making big plays at key times as well. Riq Woolen has struggled with the additional pressure and expectations in his sophomore season but he is still a great cornerback who can shut down one side of the field for you on a good day.

Rashaad Penny will be looking to show up his former team. He has played well as the 1B to D'Andre Swift's 1A this year, racking up 653 yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. Penny struggled with injuries during his time in Seattle but he has been healthy all year for the Eagles. Look for him to have an explosive game on Sunday against a depleted Seahawks run defense.

The Seahawks D will try to keep this one close but the Eagles probably take it by a couple scores.
