Can the Rams maintain the momentum of a hot start despite playing on short rest? University of Phoenix Stadium has bee a friendly venue for them of late, and they may be able to catch the Cards still reeling from a lopsided loss in which Arizona failed to score a touchdown against the Minnesota defense.

Desert Demise:
Rams Fall In OT After Blowing 17-3 Lead

Before the first third of the second quarter was over, the Los Angeles Rams looked to be on their way to a second consecutive lopsided victory at the front end of the 2018 season. Martellus Bennett’s 40 yard touchdown reception with 11:28 still remaining the the first half put the Rams up 17-3 over their hosts, the Arizona Cardinals, but LA scored only 3 more points in the remainder of a game that was sent into overtime by Chandler Catanzaro’s 51 yard boot with 1:39 left in regulation. The game then stretched on to being less than a minute from a tie before Catanzaro hit the 39 yard game-winner. That kick came after a fake punt- a direct snap to Robert Hughes- converted a 4th and short.

Both interceptions thrown by Jared Goff proved to be costly to the Rams. The first was in the end zone when the score was still 0-0, and the second was made inside the Arizona 5 by Tyrann Mathieu near the 12 minute mark of the overtime period.

Trubisky Cleared

The 0-2 Jets and rookie head coach Jim Bob Cooter will be getting some much-needed help with the early return of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. True Biscuit was having a great camp under Cooter’s tutelage before he was struck down, and observers are curious to see how the lost time will affect the second year signal-caller.

Have Brady And Brees Hit Their Tipping Points?

“When I suck, I’ll retire,” Tom Brady said four years ago. Has he begun to suck? An accurate assessment probably can’t be made only two weeks into the season, but he did suck in New England’s 35-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The times the GOAT has thrown 3 picks and zero TD’s in a game can probably be counted without getting to the toes, but that’s what he did on Sunday. But that soiling of the sheets came just week removed form 3 TD’s an no INT’s and a 144.5 rating on opening day. So for now let’s just call it a bad day. Drew Brees also went 0 and 3 on Sunday as the Saints fell to 0-2, but he also had a good (26/37, 306 yards, 95.1 rating) day in Week 1. Age has definitely chinked the armor of two of the best ever, but let’s hope their Week 2 slumps were aberrations rather than warning signs. It would be sad to see them struggle and have said later that they held on for a year too long.

Game Notes
The Lions will arrive in LA looking to remain undfeated after winning their first two games of 2018. A W may also be necessary for the Leos to keep pace with the also-unbeaten Vikings. Detroit's first round pick, Royce Freeman, has been a disappointment thus far and remains buried on the depth chart while he continues to try to adapt to the level of play in the NFL, but Matthew Stafford has been red-hot despite the loss of mentor Jim Bob Cooter.

The Rams need to be victorious in their home opener in order to avoid sinking below .500 in just the third week of the season. Hopefully the offense, which went flat after establishing a 17-3 lead in last week's loss at Arizona, will regain at least some of the fire it displayed in thrashing the Seahawks in Week 1.

Re: California Dreamin'

ALSHON!!!

Alshon Jeffery is a thoroughbred, and with a TD for each exclamation point after his name above, he was the driving force in the Los Angeles Rams winning a 43-40 horse race against the visiting Detroit Lions, whose offense is as potent as ever despite the loss of former offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. Cooter’s legacy was evident as the LA defense apparently had no clue how to stop the Detoit offense, but the Jared Goff-Jeffery connection proved to be more lethal. Jeffery’s 76 yard reception with just 12 second left in the game not only won it for the Rams, it put Goff over 500 yards for the first time in his career and gave him his second 4-TD game in 3 outings. After the Lions’ Chidobe Awuze returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a score, the game saw 7 lead changes before it was finally settled.

TD #1 (26 yards) put the Rams on top at 10-7.

#2 went for 64 yards and a 19-14 lead.

Cordarrelle Patterson had a key block on the play, which was more run than catch.

Jared Goff sheds Ziggy Ansah- something not every QB can do.

Ameer Abdullah rushed for a season-high 145 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns.

2017 practice-squadder Billy Brown has been making the most of James Washington’s absence, including catching Goff’s other TD pass in this contest.

Quandre Diggs got scorched again as Jeffery pulled out the last-second win for LA.

Smith, Chiefs Break Off Talks

Isn’t it funny how a contract year can boost a player’s stats? To be fair, the arrival of Davante Adams has more to do with Alex Smith currently possessing the league’s top passer rating. But his early success has made Smith full over himself and his agent stated that KC’s contract extension offer “isn’t even close” to what is expected. Given that Smith is 34 and has yet to reach a conference championship game, the Chiefs aren’t likely to cave, despite their failure to draft a potential successor, let alone a better backup than Tyler Bray. To avoid having contentious negotiations become a distraction, the parties have agreed to table the matter until the offseason.

Kam, Dalton Cleared

Andy Dalton and Seattle safety Kam Chancellor have been medically blessed to return to duty for Week 4 action. The Bengals went 1-2 during Dalton’s absence, and with Chancellor sidelined the Seahawks went 0-2, including a loss to San Francisco, before picking up their first win of 2018 in Week 3.

There He Goes Again

Sam Bradford. Down. This time an ankle injury with an estimated 5 week recovery period. We all assumed that it was just a matter of time before rookie Mason Rudolph would get his first career start by filling in for an injured Bradford. Unfortunately for Rudolph, it will come at the address of One Patriot Place.

Will Murray's Injury-Shortened 2018 Be His Final Season In Nashville?

Although he’s been a boon to the Tennessee Titans’ offense since his arrival in Music City, Demarco Murray has reached the dreaded age 30 mark and now he’s expected to miss one and a half to two months with an ankle injury. The Titans are pleased with Derrick Henry and 2017 draft pick Brian Hill, and with only one year remaining on his contract after this season, Murray could find himself squeezed off the Tennessee roster in 2019. That eventuality had been rumored even before Murray got hurt.
