Kentucky QB Drew Barker done for the season

LEXINGTON, Kentucky -- Kentucky will be without quarterback Drew Barker for the "remainder of the season" after suffering his second concussion in the last three games, coach Mark Stoops confirmed on Wednesday after practice.

"He has a problem and has been to see a specialist, and he will be sidelined for the rest of this season. We just hope its nothing more than that for his sake."

The news came after UK, Barker and his family consulted with a specialist about the reoccurring concussions he has suffered in the game against New Mexico and this past weekend against Vanderbilt.

The 6-foot-3 redshirt sophomore from Burlington had started all but one game this season, completing 53 percent of his passes for 834 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

His head coach hinted that this could be more than just a season ending injury though.

"It's a legitimate, serious injury," Stoops said. "He's not just a quarterback for this team, hes a young man with a lifetime ahead of him. We've seen this types of injuries cost people their way of lives. Its affected us all here this season, and we just want to wish him all the best."

The Wildcats will now turn to either Stephen Johnson, who in place of Barker has also struggled throwing for two touchdowns and four picks or true freshman Gunnar Hoak, who until now has spent the season redshirted.

“Gunnar is preparing to play,” Stoops said of the player originally redshirted this season. “Gunnar will prepare to be the backup quarterback. If Stephen goes down, Gunnar will go in.”

On Wednesday’s Southeastern Conference teleconference, Stoops said he was grateful Kentucky had landed Johnson when it did.

“I’m sure glad we have him right now, you know with Drew being banged up, we would not be in a good situation,” Stoops said, noting UK’s quarterback cupboard was all but bare after Patrick Towles transferred to Boston College.

Baker's numbers weren't that great but it's still rough news to hear that he's out for the rest of the season. Like gsu said, the defense is going to have to come alive in this one, hopefully get the season back on track.

The defense will need to be in top form, because this offense isn't anywhere near where it needs to be to win games at the moment.

Barker's numbers were not anything to praise, lets put it that way. The only thing he added was a bit more stability than what Johnson can offer but that's something we need to adjust to for the rest of the season.
