The University of Kentucky retires a jersey in honor of former players rather than a number.

Some talk that #55 may be retired in honor of the Blonde Bomber, Bob Fenimore who passed away in 2010. It's been unofficially held out of circulation for a while

Ole Miss was listed earlier in the thread saying that #18 Archie Manning and #38 Chuckie Mullins are retired. #38 is now given to the player most embodies Chucky Mullins' spirit and courage receives the "Chucky Mullins Memorial Courage Award". With the award, the player received the right to wear jersey number 38, the same number Chucky wore on his jersey. Chucky's number 38 was retired on September 3, 2006 in a pregame ceremony before the Rebels' victory over Memphis. From 2006 until 2009, the winner of the "Chucky Mullins Memorial Courage Award" wore a patch in honor of this award. The number is returning to the field in 2012, senior DE Jason Jones is the recipient of this years award and will honor the late Mullins by wearing #38.

Probably already stated but Michigan is in the process of un-retiring most all of its retired jerseys. They are going to allow players to wear a 'patch' on their jersey to commemorate those jerseys in addition to having plagues around the stadium for those members who had their jerseys retired.

I wouldn't sweat this too much considering most teams issue every number. An example would be nebraska. They have about a dozen retired numbers but they will have every number filled and many duplicated
