Washington State Season Brought to a Sour End

PULLMAN, WA - It was rivalry weekend, among those rivalries was the battle for the Apple Cup and supremacy in the state of Washington. The Cougars hosting this year's installment. Right out of the gates, Washington came firing, within a minute the Huskies already put 7 on the board. No surprise from a team who has only lost one game this year and outright leaders in the Pac-10.
However, WSU came looking for an upset, and were able to make key stops when it was necessary. Sacking Jake Locker midway through the third when WSU was down by only a field goal was crucial. Earlier, Jeff Tuel found Solomon, who had two defenders whiffing and took it 69 yards to the house to narrow the lead to just a field goal.
Things looked promising for WSU until right at the end of the third, Washington marched down the field, culminating in a 7 yard TD run to go ahead 20-10. Once again, the WSU offense failed to get much going and Jeff Tuel finished with just 9 completions on the day. In the end, Washington walked away with a 23-10 victory and the Apple Cup, along with the Pac-10 conference championship.
Washington State finishes 4-7, 3-5 in conference play. They will not have a chance to make a bowl game..their season ends here.

Beavers Snap Cougar Win Streak

CORVALLIS, OR - Snow filled the field when Washington State took on rival Oregon State, in Corvallis. WSU was riding on a 3 game win streak, and hoping to extend it before heading into the final game of the year.
However, this would not be the case as the Cougar offense failed to put a single point on the board. It wasn't until late in the second quarter when Jacquizz Rodgers fumbled the ball after being hit hard on a punt return, the ball scooped up for a quick six for the Cougars.
Later on, in the third quarter, Solomon would return a kick 97 yards for a score and the second special teams TD of the day, and the year.
Unfortunately, it was all in a losing cause as Oregon State rolled on to win, 27-14. Jeff Tuel had a career low in passing, just 4/20 and 1 interception. This is by far the poorest performance offensively this year. The Cougars hope to wash away the disgrace of this game going into the Apple Cup game against in state rival, Washington, who posts a 10-1 record ranked 7th in the country.

Cougars Thrash Cal

PULLMAN, WA - The Washington State football team may be making a historic turn around, at least within WSU's own history. The Cougars took on injury plagued Cal, who have been on a 3 game losing streak since losing several key players due to long term injuries.
Today was no different, with the loss of several more key players early in the game, allowing WSU to take control. The game began with a Cal field goal, and that would be the only time the Bears would have the lead. Jeff Tuel had another outstanding game, throwing 3 TDs, to just one interception. The Sophomore has become incredibly efficient and he has lead WSU to three consecutive victories.
Several Cal turnovers in their own territory lead to their demise in the second quarter as Washington State improves to 4-5(3-3) with a 27-3 win. Coach O'Hern addresses the current win streak:
"The last 3 weeks have been spot on, however the teams we have faced aren't top programs, and they each were less than stellar when we faced them. I'm not taking away from our wins, but the final two games are against the #3 and #1 in the Pac-10, as of now. Washington only has one loss, and Oregon State will be no easy game either. These tough games are coming at an unfortunate time, as it is essential to win out in order to have a chance at a bowl game. We'll take it one step at a time, and hope for the best. Thank you."
Oregon State and Washington round out the final games of the season for the Cougars. The two teams combined record is 13-4.

WSU Pulls Off Upset in an Instant Classic

STANFORD, CA - It was a cool, rainy day in Stanford, CA, as Washington State came in with a four game losing streak. The Cardinal were heavily favored to win this one. Within two minutes, they scored and it appeared it was going to be another thrashing for WSU.
However, things took a turn for the better when WSU forced several turnovers, and never once turned the ball over themselves. Jeff Tuel had the game of his career, leading a WSU offense we had not yet seen this season. WSU took a 21-14 lead heading into the half.
Things really turned interesting going into the fourth, with the Cougars sitting on top of a 24-14 lead. All looked well until Andrew Luck hit his WR for a 41 yard TD pass, sending the stadium into a state of euphoria. WSU struggled to get anything going and gave the ball back to Stanford, unwillingly via a punt, of course. With 3:25 to go, Andrew Luck finds yet another hole in the defense, hitting the same receiver again, this time for 62 yards.
Stanford looked like they might escape this one, leading 28-24. The pressure was on, with just over 3 minutes to go. Jeff Tuel found Daniel Blackledge on back to back passes that set WSU up in Stanford territory. Tuel then found Isiah Barton on second down at the 36, running a deep post over the middle of the field. Barton snagged the ball out of the air, plowed forward, stopped just short of the goalline. The fans grew quiet, WSU had only one yard to go, and they had just over 2 minutes to do so.
On first down, right away they hand it to the fullback, Bosch, who finds a gaping hole to run through, untouched! Touchdown Cougars! WSU takes a 31-28 lead, with 1:55 to go.
Too much time remained, though, and Andrew Luck, minus a couple of untimely interceptions, had torn this defense apart with his precision accuracy. It appeared no different this time around. He marched his men down to around the 40 in WSU territory, with :39 to go. Several plays later, a 4th and 10. They go to the air, finding who else but Whalen right over the middle, uncovered. This setup first and ten at the 28. First down, incomplete pass to the flats. Second down, run the ball up the middle for a 6 yard gain. 3rd down came, they call a timeout, :18 remain at the 22 yard line.
Andrew Luck sets up in the shotgun. A wet ball is snapped high, he snags it, secures it in his hands. The offensive line holds up any pressure from the WSU defense. Luck, plenty of time to throw, heaves one in the corner of the endzone...Cory Burk is there in coverage...Burk INTERCEPTS IT, taking it just inches from the Stanford wide out! Burk runs out of the endzone, down the sideline..pushed out at the 14! It's OVER! They have done it!
Washington State pulls off an improbable upset at Stanford, 31-28. This game was dubbed an ESPN Instant Classic, given a classic score of 1167. WSU gets their much deserved second win of the year, and first conference win of the year as well.
Jeff Tuel earned Player of the Game honors, throwing for close to 400 yards, no interceptions. The Sophomore QB has really grown into the role in the past few weeks. Cory Burk intercepted the Stanford QB twice, and for the first time this season, WSU did not turn the ball over, and kept the turnover differential positive.

Frustrating Loss to Arizona

PULLMAN, WA - The second week of October, the Cougars hosting the Wildcats of Arizona. It was yet another afternoon of poor play by WSU. The first half in particular, was extremely bad. Jeff Tuel threw 2 picks that each led to a score by Arizona. By the third quarter, WSU's running game began to shine and James Montgomery carried this team to it's first score of the game.
Backup HB Carl Winston also ran a few plays that led to a later TD by our Cougars. Isiah Barton made several huge plays on the second WSU scoring drive, including the 4th and 1 at the 1, which was a back of the end zone catch putting in the second TD of the day for WSU. Even at the end, WR Daniel Blackledge had a hail mary in his hands before a defender hit him hard, knocking the ball out for an incompletion with :40 to go.
Jeff Tuel's turnaround performance in the second half showed he still had something to prove and there maybe more in store as the Cougars head to 4-2 Stanford in Week 8.

Ducks Embarrass Cougars in Pullman

PULLMAN, WA - A chilly October day, as the #2 Oregon Ducks came to town to take on a struggling Washington State team. The Ducks took control early on, and showed exactly why they are #2. QB Nate Costa of Oregon earned player of the game, throwing only 5 incompletions and totaling 3 TDs through the air.
At halftime, the score 31-10, fans began leaving Martin Stadium out of pure embarrassment. One fan was not too thrilled at the poor performance of WSU, "I can't say I'm surprised, but that doesn't make up for the utter shame this team has shown the past few weeks. This isn't Washington State football, it's just sad."
Oregon walked out with an easy 41-13 victory, where WSU's only high note was Isiah Barton, yet again. Barton made a huge TD play in the second quarter that only temporarily put a band-aid on the woes of the Cougars.
Coach O'Hern has little time to try and turn this team around, with fans and alumni asking for more.
"I'm doing everything in my power to change this team, but you have to realize this can't happen over the course of a few weeks. This team is still suffering from the previous coach's ways. I know this team is capable of more, we just need time to bring that out."
Washington State falls to 1-4(0-2 in Pac-10 play) heading into next weeks home game against Arizona(2-3).

Ugly Loss for the Cougars at UCLA

LOS ANGELES, CA - Washington State opened up Pac-10 play at UCLA, a team with similar struggles to WSU so far this season. Early on, both teams failed to put the ball in the endzone, the score would be 3-3 at the half.
The highlight of the [very lackluster] first half was a 58 yard Jeff Tuel bomb to Isiah Barton, two plays later, the Cougars would turn the ball over. Turnovers...effectively killed Washington State's chances at winning this game. A swarming UCLA defense combined with a rattled Jeff Tuel led to 4 interceptions. Marshall Lobbestael came in and managed to go 5/7 and a huge play late in the 4th.
WSU trailed 13-3 with 1:29 to go, when Lobbestael found Isiah Barton wide open, streaking down the sideline. Barton took it all the way, shaking off one defender, for a 74 yard TD.
It was, unfortunately, too little too late as UCLA claimed victory 13-10.
*KEEP IN MIND* I had decided to start this dynasty(Wednesday is when I began playing) with half named rosters, some teams were not complete and so that is why(see below) there are players with no names.

Washington State Lose in Gut-Wrenching Fashion to SMU

UNIVERSITY PARK, TX - September 11, 2010, the Washington State football team travels to Texas to take on SMU. It wasn't going to be an easy one against the Mustangs, who have mastered the Run and Shoot offense.
It certainly started well for SMU, as they took a 21-3 lead through the early portions of the third quarter. The WSU defense could not stop the pass, which would eventually accumulate over 400 yards. While many were feeling down, Coach O'Hern continued to push his team, and midway through the third quarter, we got an answer.
HB James Montgomery broke a 50 yard run for a TD, untouched the entire way. This cut SMU's lead down to 21-10 with just over half of the third to go. The defense was stepping it up, stopping SMU's offense and forcing 3 and outs. Early in the fourth quarter, Jeff Tuel is able to lead a huge drive that culminated in a 27 yard Jeffrey Solomon TD reception. WSU was in striking distance, they could smell victory.
It wasn't over yet, as SMU's QB Pardon came up huge going 8/10 on a 10 play drive ending in a 10 yard pass to WR Wilkerson. 28-17, SMU lead, 3:40 to go.
WSU answers 59 seconds later, thanks to a huge pass play of 47 yards that set up the Cougars for a quick TD with 2:41 to go.
A 2 point attempt, to make it a 3 point game, failed, however the Cougars would not get the ball back. Coach O'Hern simply put, "Heartbreaking, tough loss." WSU falls to 1-2 heading into conference play in Week 5, as they will take on UCLA following the Week 4 bye.

PULLMAN, WA - A beautiful September afternoon in Pullman gave way to a Cougar victory over rival Idaho. The WSU defense made some outstanding plays to keep Idaho off the board. Even Idaho struggled to score once, where they missed the extra point.
The Battle for the Palouse went our way, giving WSU it's first win of the year. While the offense didn't play as good as it should have, they did it well enough to come away winners. Coach O'Hern on the game:
"It wasn't the most impressive game, it wasn't between the two most impressive teams. It was a hard fought battle nonetheless, we showed we were the better team. It feels good to win our first home game, a rivalry game at that! A great way to start my career here at WSU."
The Cougars are 1-1 with a game at SMU(1-1) next week, and a week 4 bye.

Cougars Lose a Close One in Stillwater

STILLWATER, OK - It was a rainy afternoon for opening weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Oklahoma State Cowboys hosted our very own WSU Cougars. It was a sloppy game, to say the least. Neither team's offense ever really got going. One play did shine for the Cougars, as the second play from scrimmage Jared Karstetter came on an end around. He would take it all the way, 82 yards for the first score of the game.
The Cowboys would answer later in the first with a 6 yard rushing TD. Later on, in the third quarter, WSU leading 10-7, a key mistake by QB Jeff Tuel fumbling the ball gave OKST an easy pick up and run for a TD to give them the lead. However, the OKST kicker misses the extra point, to add to all the drama, keeping the game within field goal range for the Cougars. There seemed to be no end to the unexpected turns this game took.
We pick it up midway through the 4th, Cougars line up for a 50 yard field goal, hoping to tie it up in this defensive battle. The wind was no help, and the kick fell just short, WSU kicker Grasu was extremely disappointed as he went to the sidelines.
The Cougars were given another chance with under 2 minutes to go, after intercepting a poorly thrown ball by OKST's QB. It looked promising as WSU was given another chance to either tie or win the game. Boos came from the stands as the OKST QB, Weeden, headed over to the sideline. The very next play, however, Tuel made the same mistake, throwing a pick and thus ending a chance for any chance of a minor upset.
The Cowboys escaped with a 13-10 win.
INJURY REPORT
Star WSU receiver, Jared Karstetter, suffered a broken vertebrae early in the second quarter, and will be out for the entire season.
