For the second straight week the Steelers overcame a slow start to dominate an expansion franchise. After Erric Pegram fumbled on the first play from scrimmage for the Steelers, a play in which he would leave with an injured ankle, the Jaguars would quickly turn it to seven with a Mark Brunell TD pass. The Steelers would then on their second possession drive all the way into FG range to have a Norm Johnson kick blocked. The Jaguars would then use that momentum to go up 10-0. The Steelers would once again drive deep into Jags territory. The drive turned up fruitless as O'Donnell failed to convert a fourth and goal from the one foot line on a QB sneak. The Steelers defense would bail the team out by forcing a punt on the ensuing drive. Then an explosion of big plays happened for the Steelers. Bam Morris ripped off a 75 yard TD run. On the following kick off DB Randy Fuller would force a fumble. Fellow reserve DB Alvoid Mays would scoop it up and race into the endzone. The Steelers would then force a quick punt after three straight Brunell incompletions. O'Donnell would then find a streaking Ernie Mills down the sideline as he raced 80 yards into the end zone. In a minute and 24 seconds the score went from 10-0 to 24-10 in the Steelers favor. The Steelers defense continued to harrass Brunell sacking him 6 times and intercepting him a total of three times. O'Donnell would tack another bomb on to his box score with a 71 yard shot down the sideline to Yancey Thigpen early in the third. The Steelers were the first playoff team from last season that Jaguars have played this year. Making the NFL believe that their 4-0 record entering the season was a mirage.

Stories from around the league:

The Rams and Giants fought to a 20-20 tie. The first of the 1995 season. At points it seemed as neither team wanted to win as poor qb play on both sides was very apparent throughout the game.

Derrick THomas forced a sack fumble in the closing minutes of the game to help propel his Chiefs past the expansion Texans.

Steve Walsh threw 4 second half INTs leading to the opposing Vikings scoring 28 unanswered 2nd half points as the Bears fell to the Vikings 49-28.

Jim Kelly threw 3 INTs in the Bills first lost of the season to the banged up Bengals who are now playing their 3rd QB of the season.

The Steelers survived a slow start to dominate their new division foe the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens led 3-0 at the end of the first. O'Donnell looked rusty as he missed on his first 4 attempts and the running game failed to give him much support. The Steelers' struggles into the 2nd quarter as two fumbles lost kept them from capitalizing on good field position. At the half the score would read 3-3. The Steelers would then dominate the Ravens the entire second half. O'Donnell after missing on his first 4 attempts would hit his last 10 and toss two Touchdown passes. The running game took control and Pegram would rip off a 99 yard TD run as they scored 33 unanswered points. The defense came alive after two disappointing performances the last two weeks. They forced takeaways. They record sacks. They played with an edge that was missing. The Steelers now stand at 2-2 and host the expansion and undefeated Jaguars next week.

The Steelers are officially on a losing streak. The Steelers controlled their contest with the Bears for 50 minutes of football. The Steelers held a 32-17 lead before the Bears went on a furious run. Bears back up QB Steve Walsh finished with 307 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day. 154 of those yards and both TDs coming in the last 10 minutes. Former Steeler Jeff Graham would catch the game winning score with just under 40 seconds left as he leaped over CB Rod Woodson to pluck what looked like a sure INT away from him. The Steelers pass rush continues to be non-existent after an explosive week one. QB Mike Tomczak had a better outing keeping Jim Miller on the sideline. That said he struggled to move the chains in the 4th quarter going 0-5 on third downs in the final frame. The Steelers are optimistic they will have starter O'Donnell back next week as they travel to the winless and expansion Ravens.

After winning the latest installment of the Turnpike rivalry the Steelers returned home to face the Minnesota Vikings. The Steelers would face adversity quickly. On the first play from scrimmage QB Neil O'Donnell would be sacked hard by Viking defender John Randle. O'Donnell would leave the game with a shoulder injury and is in danger of missing next week too. Back QB Mike Tomczak would enter the game in relief. Despite his struggles The Steelers found themselves tied at 10 as the entered the locker room for half time. The second half would be a different story. The Vikings would score 10 unanswered points to push the score to 20-10. Bill Cowher then elected to replace the ineffective Tomczak for young QB Jim Miller. He too found inconsistencies, but managed to lead the Steelers on a scoring drive that resulted in a TD pass to veteran TE Jonathan Hayes. With 3:57 seconds left in the game Jim Miller had a chance to drive the Steelers for the game tying touchdown. In stead he found OLB Broderick Thomas of the Vikings who returned the pick 34 yards for the game clinching score.

Stories from around the league:

The expansion Jacksonville Jaguars won their second game of the season. They now sit at 2-0 overall and also 2-0 in the newly formed AFC South.

The Kansas City Chiefs followed up a disappointing week one with a 48-24 victory over the visiting Eagles. Marcus Allen led the way with 143 yards on only 19 carries and three scores.

Atlanta hosted Green Bay for the shoot out of the week. Both teams topped 430 yards offense. Both teams scored 28 points a piece a furious 4th quarter, but 28 wasn't enough for Brett Favre and his packers as the Falcons held on 52-45.

NFL football is back! The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the 1995 season by renewing the turnpike rivalry with the hated Cleveland Browns. This time it would be part of the newly formed AFC North. Free agent pick up Erric Pegram gave the Steelers an early spark with a 42 yard TD dash as weaved around a Browns safety in the alley. Pegrams early running success was needed as O'Donnell and the passing attack got off to a slow start as the Browns would intercept two second quarter passes. The first of which would set up a 28 yard scramble by Browns QB Testaverde. That scramble would then lead to a 30 yard TD toss to a wide open Browns TE. The Steelers would regroup in the second half Browns 24-0. O'Donnell would find his groove as he tossed two TDs to Yancey Thigpen. The defense would completely shut the Browns down in the second half as they sacked Vinny 5 of their 7 times in the last quarter and a half. OLB Greg Lloyd lead the way notching 3 himself.

Pittsburgh Gazette Steelers Training Camp Primer

January 15th, 1994 will be a dayear that will be in the back of Steelers coaches, players, and fans minds. After dominating the visiting San Diego Chargers for nearly three quarters of the AFC championship game the Steelers watched their Super Bowl dreams go up in smoke in the aftermath of two late Stan Humphries bombs and a failed pass attempt just three yards away from the goal line. "Three more yards" has become the rally cry around the city and Steelers facility this Spring and Summer. Though the scars of the past drive this Steelers bunch, like the NFL itself entering the 1995 season, there are winds of change within the organization. The Steelers have a new defensive Coordinato after promoting secondary coach Dick LeBeau in the wake of Dom Capers moving on to Carolina to lead the expansion Panthers. From a player standpoint the Steelers will have some questions marks on that terrific defense from the year prior. After Tim McKyer followed Capers to Carolina as a Free Agent and a shooting accident has sidelined CB Deon Figures for the Summer there is open competition for the CB spot opposite of All Pro Rod Woodson.

On the offensive side of the ball the Steelers will look to fill the departures of TE Eric Green who will know catch passes from future Hall of Famer Dan Marino. The Steelers are hoping to replace Green with their first round rookie TE Mark Bruener and veteran TE Jonathan Hayes while also hoping on more production from the Steelers' WR group. The Steelers are also hoping that free agent pick up Erric Pegram will be able to fill in for the departed Barry Foster. The Steelers let their short lived super star hit the open market after injuries began to pile up and sap his ability. Barry Foster looks to prove doubters in Pittsburgh wrong as he spearheads the expansion Houston Texans backfield. Pegram will be paired with 2nd year back Bam Morris who had a strong rookie campaign for the Steelers. Though as we approach camp there are some concerns over Morris' weight and conditioning around the facility. The Steelers will also sport two new starting guards as Duval Love and Todd Kalis are both playing elsewhere. Replacing them are Tom Newberry and the versatile Justin Strzelczyk. Rookie Brenden Stai will also be in the mix.

Special Teams will also look different as the franchise's best kicker will be swinging his leg on the other side of the state for the Eagles. Mark Royals was also allowed to leave town. The Steelers brought in vets Norm Johnson and Rohn Stark to replace them. There is also buzz around the building that Coach Cowher is looking to get Rod Woodson off return duties for good as he turned 30 this season. The thought process is to keep him as fresh as possible. Possible replacements are Charles Johnson who returned kicks and punts with Woodson last season as a rookie, Andre Hastings, and Ernie Mills.

Potential Break Out Players

During Spring workouts a few guys have really stood out in terms of their improvement. Neil O'Donnell's hand looks completely healthy after it was banged up last season, but the Steelers and fans know what the team has with him. A steady performer who seems to be under appreciated by the "loud" portion of the fanbase. The Steelers WR group looks to be very much improved. Especially Yancey Thigpen. He could be the go to guy with Eric Green no longer around. Defensively 3rd year CB Willie Williams looks to be very much improved. With the spot opposite of Woodson open due to free agency and off the field occurrences he could be primed to join the starting lineup.
