The reason is many of the players names are all linked to each other in unexpected ways. It seems when 2k created this file they had no idea or intentions to have the players adjusted in any way. Because of this unlike 2k5 none of the players have......

A. Enough room for characters to give each player their full name.

B. Some players seem to share names. So the default teams would not be properly adjusted. The names are hard coded to what position in the file they are located.
Not sure if that is true. When I was looking at the file, there appears to be space to add around 1400 unique 16 character names to the save. In addition, you can change the first and/or last name that each player in the save is in pointing to.

How would you go about doing that?

Finn,

What's it going to take? Name your price. I got some cash with your name on it and I'm sure a few others will toss some chips in too to make it worth your while. What's the word?

I'm just waiting for catcatch to tell us how to adjust the logo on the collar and numbers on the sides of the uniforms in the hex editor, then I can really get to work on making a 32 team roster for offline play.

Good work on the teams!
Well, if you go against the 11-tiered players per team model, just know that none of those teams will be usable for online play.

To use a team online, you need to have 11 tiered players. They can be any tier, though.

So the "no-star" format would only work for offline use.

That's fine with me. I don't play online. This was planned strictly for offline use.

Yes I saw that, but that was for the created players. The massive amount of room dedicated for created player names is quite long.

This does not work cause yes you can change what name they have but their position in the file still seems to point to the same position for each name.

For example 3-4 weeks ago I switched Cunningham and Moon so Cunningham would be on the Philadelphia Americans roster and Moon off of it. I switched the entire player profile for both players and what happened was Moon had Cunningham's name and Cunningham had Moon's name. Not only that but the team history of what teams they played for also was switched. Not surprisingly that info is also listed with the names as well.

A work around could be when editing the default teams is to choose a name in the database and not create a custom name. Not sure if this would work entirely

Like instead of calling TE Jason Witten, call him Jason (Whitted). Whitted is a name in the default database. Maybe using non default names for the default players screws up the names.

You could change the player name pointers to point to names in the CAP names area rather then their default name.
