i think they cut the online when xbox stopped offering xbl for last gen xbox titles.

if not, the online service was still available for quite some time after an emulator was released to make it backwards compatible with the 360.

however, the few times i tried to play it online, the lag was unbearable

Same here. Couldn't ever get it to truly work. Was a freeze fest. Think we'd all still be playing it if we could.

Is this thread referring to only league/tournament play online? because I have been able to play quick matches (ranked or unranked) and custom matches with people on my friends list on Xbox for the past month or so, ever since the announcement that they cut the servers. I'm new here and just was wondering because I'd like to be able to play alot more people without worrying about running into someone who uses hex editing of course.

Quick matches and custom matches are still possible.

It's just leagues, tournaments, and lobbies that were taken down.
