Philadelphia Eagles Deep Dive: Quarterbacks
Nick Foles, 9
The new face of the franchise. Nicholas Edward "Nick" Foles, the 25 year-old out of Arizona took over for Michael Vick in week 5 and never looked back. Finishing with the best touchdown/interception ratio since Tom Brady's 36/4 with a 27/2, he led the league in passer rating with an 119.0. Foles also led the Eagles to their first playoff berth since 2010, but lost to the Saints at home, 26-24. Nick Foles enters this season as the starter, hoping to lead the eagles to another Division title, and further.
Matt Barkley, 2
The best-looking guy on the team. Matthew Montgomery "Matt" Barkley out of USC was projected to be a top-ten pick before returning to USc for his senior season. A shoulder injury kept him from throwing at the combine, and he fell to the fourth round of the 2013 draft. Philadelphia took him as the 98th pick. Barkley threw a total of 12,327 yards, 117 touchdowns and 48 interceptions. Matt threw four interceptions to no touchdowns this past season in relief of Nick Foles and Michael Vick. There are concerns with his composure, but he has a chance to beat the odds and earn the job as the team's backup signal caller.
Mark Sanchez, 3
The guy with most to prove. The butt-fumble, the inconsistency, the hatred of once beloved fans. Mark Travis John Sanchez took all of it in stride coming out of the blackhole known as the New York Jets. Mark Sanchez, also out of USC led the Jets to two back-to-back AFC Championship appearances, but always struggled with turnovers. A touchdown/interception ratio of 68/69 along with many other factors led to his release from New York, and his subsequent signing in Philadelphia. Sanchez missed last season with a shoulder injury, but enters camp as the favorite to win the back-up job.
G.J. Kinne, 4
The odd-man out. Gary Joe Kinne III is a longshot from making the roster, but if the USC boys Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley were to stumble, he could end up as the third QB on the roster. Kinne, out of Tulsa put up 81 touchdowns in his career there. He is also a former Jet like Sanchez, signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Kinne spent some time in the UFL and AFL before being signed to the Eagles practice squad when Nick Foles and Michael Vick were facing injuries. He now has his chance to outshine two lackluster performers and earn a spot on the 53-man roster, instead of the 8-man practice squad.
Projected Week One Depth Chart:
-Nick Foles, 9
-Mark Sanchez, 3
