Luis Tiant went the distance allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and Carl Yastrzemski belted a 3-run HR to erase a 2-0 Twins lead to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. Rusty Staub gave Minnesota the early lead with a solo HR and Hal McRae had an RBI double to make it 2-0 Twins before Yaz's blow in the 6th.

Jim Rice went 3-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 10-2 drubbing of the Milwaukee Brewers in the opening game of their 2-game series and Boston's 9-game road trip. Catfish Hunter (4-6) went 8 innings allowing only 2 runs on 6 hits. Jerry Remy and George Scott drove in a pair of runs each with Rick Burleson and Carlton Fisk also driving in a run for Boston. Larry Hisle provided the Milwaukee runs with a pair of solo home runs.

Carl Yastrzemski belted a 2-run HR in the 7th to give Boston the lead and Jim Rice (3-4) also had an RBI for the Red Sox. Paul Molitor drove in the lone Milwaukee run on a ground out in the 8th. Tom Burgmeier and Dick Drago (3-1) combined to allow 1 run on 5 hits.

Butch Hobson went 3-4 with a 2-run home run to lead the power display and help lead the Boston Red Sox to an 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals in the first game of the 3-game set. Jerry Remy, Carl Yastrzemski and Dwight Evans each belted 2-run home runs for the other Boston runs. George Zeber, Willie Wilson and Johnnie LeMaster each drove in a run for Kansas City. Mike Torrez (7-7) scattered 10 hits in 7 2/3 innings to even his record.

Jim Rice, George Scott, Rick Burleson and Carl Yastrzemski each drove in a pair of runs with Jerry Remy, Carlton Fisk and Fred Lynn each also driving in a run for Boston. Amos Otis (pog, 2-4, 3-run HR, SB) led the Royals' attack with Tom Poquette and Darrell Porter each driving in a run for Kansas City.

Boston's other run came on a solo HR by Butch Hobson. U.L. Washington, Joe Zdeb and Willie Wilson each drove in a run for the Royals.

With the trade deadline drawing near, I talked with the Kansas City Royals about the availability of starting pitcher Andy Hassler. To go along with a prospect and cash, Kansas City wants either starting pitcher Dennis Eckersley, reliever Bob Stanley or center fielder Fred Lynn.

Yaz hit a 2-run HR in the 1st to give Boston the lead then an RBI double by Rod Carew and RBI singles by Rusty Staub and Hal McRae gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead in the last of the 3rd. Butch Hobson hit a 2-run HR to give the Red Sox the lead in the top of the 8th before Yaz's 3-run HR later in the inning put the game away.

Jerry Augustine only allowed 3 hits in going the distance as the Milwaukee Brewers shut out the Boston Red Sox, 5-0, in the first game of the 3-game series. Milt May blasted a 3-run home run with Dick Davis and Dave May each hitting solo home runs off of Red Sox starter Mike Torrez (9-8) for the Brewers.

Jim Rice continued his hot hitting, going 5-5 with a pair of home runs and 3 RBIs, to lead the 20-hit Boston attack as the Red Sox destroyed the Milwaukee Brewers, 11-1. Butch Hobson belted 2 HRs and drove in 4 runs while Carl Yastrzemski drove in a pair of runs and both Bob Montgomery and Garry Hancock each drove in a run for the Red Sox. Robin Yount accounted for the lone Milwaukee run with an RBI double.

Dave May drove in Danny Goodwin from second base in the bottom of the ninth to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox in the rubber game of the 3-game set. Cecil Cooper tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with a solo home run for the other Brewers' run. Fred Kendall drove in the only Boston run with a ground out in the 4th to give the Red Sox the lead. Andy Replogle (11-4) was the player of the game for allowing only one run and 5 hits in hurling a complete game.

Boston's Jim Rice was named the AL Player of the Month for July as he posted a .400 batting average with 9 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 28 runs.
Milwaukee's Jim Palmer was awarded the AL's Player of the Month for July after posting a 5-1 record with an ERA of 2.92 over 52.1 innings with 30 strikeouts.
Texas's Bill Sample was named the AL Rookie of the Month for July after he hit .299 with 2 home runs, 13 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Philadelphia's Bob Boon was voted Player of the Month for July after batting .419 with 6 home runs, 21 RBIs and 26 runs scored.
