"Ending The Curse" -- Chicago Cubs Franchise (MLB '11 -- Fantasy Draft)
As I work on rosters, I find myself wanting to play some games along the way. I chose the Cubs because I want a National League team that plays in a stadium I like and since Wrigley is my favorite NL stadium, the Cubs got chosen. But, I didn't want to play with their current team, so I did a fantasy draft using Knight's OSFM rosters. Here are my round by round results (I had the 3rd pick overall): Round 1 1B Albert Pujols: Despite the current lower than usual numbers he's posting this year, King Albert gets my #1 pick. The guy has it all, though he's older than, say, Cabrera or Votto, he's consistent. Round 2 SP Clayton Kershaw: Young lefty who has many years ahead of him and is ready to be an ace of a staff. Round 3 SP Jon Lester: Another southpaw with ace stuff. Good lefties are harder to find, so I chose to grab my two favorites before they were gone. Round 4 CF Andrew McCutchen: There's very little this guy can't do, but I mostly grabbed him to hit leadoff and steal some bases. Hopefully, he'll knock a few out of the park as well, but that's not his main purpose. Just a nice all-around good player. Round 5 SS Alexei Ramirez: Shortstop is a tough position to grab someone for and since Hanley Ramirez and the "elite" ones were gone, I chose to grab Alexei, who I feel is underrated and very solid once April passes and the weather warms up. Round 6 2B Rickie Weeks: For a second baseman, has some pop in his bat. Not crazy about his potential BA, but he's a solid player at a weak position and I wanted to grab the less-than-deep positions first. Round 7 RF Michael Stanton: The man is a beast and I chose him to be Albert's bash brother. He's young, powerful, and has a huge upside. Round 8 RP Daniel Bard: I needed a solid arm in the bullpen and Bard was great all last year for the Sox. He may have faltered a little this year, but has still been solid. Round 9 RP Hong-Chi Kuo: Bard's my right-hander, but I needed a reliable left-hander in the 'pen and Kuo did an excellent job last year with the Dodgers. as long as he stays healthy, I have faith in him. Round 10 C Russell Martin: Enjoying a comeback year with the Yankees this year, here's hoping that he can recapture some of his old magic for the '11 video game season as well. Pretty good catcher when he's motivated. Round 11 3B Placido Polanco: Always puts up solid numbers and can play 2B as well. i plan on using him more as a utility guy, but he will play a lot and get plenty of starts. However, he's getting up there in age and I anticipate him slowing down in the future...which is why-- Round 12 3B Mike Moustakas: was chosen to gradually take over at 3B for Polanco, but will get the starting job if he puts up the numbers that are expected of him. Round 13 LF Johnny Damon: Like Polanco, is a veteran presence and every team needs veterans on it. Damon, with the exception of his year in Detroit, has always been pretty productive and even at 37, can still compete with the best of them. Round 14 SP Anibal Sanchez: With two lefties already selected, I figured I'd better get a few righty starters and Sanchez was the best available in terms of age and potential. Round 15 SP Michael Pineda: having a great year with Seattle, and while I don't doubt his skill, can't help but wonder how much pitching in Seattle has helped his cause. Round 16 RP Craig Kimbrel: Young with tons of potential and his best years are still ahead of him. Round 17 2B Jamey Carroll: The veteran utility man who can pretty much play anywhere on the field. Has experience, can still run pretty well, and is reliable. Doesn't hit for power at all, but makes up for it with grit. Round 18 RP Jordan Walden: Another young man with tons of potential who has huge upside. Has already established himself in the Angels 'pen this year as their closer. Round 19 LF Reed Johnson: Can play all outfield positions and will be used much like Jamey Carroll as a utility outfielder to fill in when people need rest or in late innings for defensive upgrades. Round 20 SP R. A. Dickey: To be honest, I'm not sure why I chose Dickey here, but he just seemed to be a different type of pitcher than everyone else on the roster. His knuckleball gave him some pretty good numbers and reinvented his career in 2010 and one can hope it carries over to the 2011 video game season. Round 21 C Ivan Rodriguez: A former MVP in the twilight of his career offensively, but is still a defensive beast and will be a good way to get Martin some days off when he needs rest. Round 22 LF Mike Morse: Not real well-known due to playing in Washington, but he seems to have a lot of potential. Will be primarily used to platoon with both Damon in LF and play some 1B when Albert needs rest. Round 23 RP Koji Uehara: 35 years old, but that doesn't seem to hurt him these days and is still putting up solid efforts. May be the team's closer, but the current plan is a committee. Round 24 RP Kenley Jansen: A former position player converted into a pitcher, Jansen can strike out guys like no other and will hopefully be some help out of the 'pen. Round 25 RP Leo Nunez: The last roster spot goes to Nunez, who is having a pretty good year with Florida this season. Hopefully, that will translate into the game as well, but we'll see. There were more picks, but they're in the minors and I won't be playing those games. You'll see them when injures happen or they get called up... Chicago Cubs Depth Chart - 2011

Opening day was a great game that ended with a walk-off home run from Alexei Ramirez, his second of the night. The balls were flying out of Wrigley Field, as there were 6 home runs on the day.
Alexei Ramirez was clearly the Player of the Game as he went 4 for 4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI's.

Hope you don't mind if i post here, if so just let me know and i'll remove it...
That's a real solid fantasy draft, probably more older guys than i would have gone for, but it makes you team more of a threat now than my team... Your bullpen is very strong, and i like your outfield, the only thing i'm wondering is why you chose Kuo when Chapman would still have been available... But hey to each his own i guess... I'll be following, feel free to check out mine, the link is in my sig below... Happy Gaming...

On Chapman, I'll be honest and say that I just didn't see his name on the list of available players, so he didn't cross my mind at that point. Plus, Kuo's only 29 and has big league experience and Chapman is a little wild at times, but I'd still like to get him on the team. I do need another left-handed arm out of the 'pen, however, so maybe some team out there will have mercy on me and make me a trade. Didn't realize until the draft was done that I only had one left-hander in the 'pen. I like the young guys, but every team needs some vets on it and I do have some younger guys in the minors that I didn't mention, so we'll see. The older guys are mostly backups at this point in their careers. I like a balance of young players and vets on my teams. I'll definitely check yours out. Thanks! |

Re: "Ending The Curse" -- Chicago Cubs Franchise (MLB '11 -- Fantasy Draft)
Game 2 of the series with the Pirates did not end as well for the Cubs as they fell 10-8. The ball continued flying out of Wrigley Field and Alexei Ramirez belted another home run and continued his hot streak from the day before. However, Alex Rios went on a spree and belted two homers while knocking in multiple runs. The score was manageable when Sanchez left the game after the 7th inning, but Jordan Walden gave up two home runs in his inning of work.
A few words were exchanged between the two teams after Russell Martin was drilled in his first at-bat. In retaliation, Sanchez later drilled Bobby Crosby to even the score, but the Pirates threw one at Martin later in the game once again and after his pop up out, according to the announcers, heated words were exchanged between Martin and Ben Sheets, but nothing serious occurred. The Cubs were mounting a comeback in the bottom of the ninth before the Pirates brought in Heath Bell to save the game, at which point Mike Stanton grounded into a double play to end the game. It was another slugfest at Wrigley. More coming...

Re: "Ending The Curse" -- Chicago Cubs Franchise (MLB '11 -- Fantasy Draft)
Game 3 was a blowout. The Cubs came to play, but it was like batting practice as they ran Erik Bedard out of the game after 2 innings. Alexei Ramirez continued to scorch the ball, hitting 2 more HR's, driving in 5, and even stealing a base.
Placido Polanco made his first start and went 4 for 5 while Mike Moustakas hit a pinch hit 2-run homer as the battle for 3B continues... Albert Pujols and Mike Stanton hit back-to-back homers for the 2nd time in the season. Jon Lester was unstoppable in 7 innings of work, only giving up 2 hits in a shutout win over the Pirates.

Re: "Ending The Curse" -- Chicago Cubs Franchise (MLB '11 -- Fantasy Draft)
Game 4 was another domination by the Cubs, this over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Michael Pineda was untouchable, striking out 14 batters in a complete game shutout.
Albert Pujols continued to be scorching, hitting another homer as Placido Polanco, playing second base to give Weeks a day off, got his second multi-hit game in a row. Mike Moustakas also homered for the second game in a row. (Personal note: I may have to adjust some sliders. These last two games were way too easy.)
