Season 1 - Game 21
8-13

Martinez smacks five hits, Astros win in 16
Phillips with two home runs in loss, Cueto strong again

The game was almost over in the 9th, until Sean Marshall blew his second save of the season--giving up a solo shot to left off the bat of Carlos Lee. It almost ended again in the 13th when J.D. Martinez doubled in a run in the top of the inning. Brandon Phillips answered in the bottom half with an RBI single to keep the game going.

It finally ended in the 16th after Martinez knocked in his 4th run of the game with a solo home run to left. The Reds went down in order to put an end to the longest game in the majors this year.

Phillips had two home runs, both solo shots. Ryan Ludwick also had a solo home run. Jay Bruce struggled, going 0-7 on the day.

Johnny Cueto was in line for the win after throwing six innings and giving up 2 runs. It was his fifth quality start in as many tries.

The Reds will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday with a pair of struggling pitchers taking the mound. Mat Latos (1-3, 8.53) will start for the Reds against the Astros' Bud Norris (0-3, 2.52).

Re: Are you Red-dy? | A Cincinnati Reds Franchise |

Season 1 - Game 22
8-14

Swept in Cincy
Martinez out of lineup, still hurts Reds

It looked more like a Triple-A game in Cincinnati, as most of the two teams were resting players from the 16-inning marathon the night before. J.D. Martinez was out of the lineup, but still managed to make the Reds pay off the bench.

Martinez entered the game in a double switch in the 8th, with his team up 3-2. He promptly ripped a single to center on the first pitch he saw. He then stole second, and eventually wound up scoring on Carlos Lee's third double of the year--putting the Astros up 4-2.

That extra run made all the difference, as the Reds were struggling to make solid contact all night. It was clear the team was incapable of putting together a rally late in the game.

Cincinnati's lineup did not include the lately-hot Brandon Phillips, Scott Rolen or Jay Bruce--on a day when the home-run ball was sorely needed. Votto's double was the only ball that reached the outfield wall for the Reds. Their two runs were both unearned--thanks in part to three Houston errors.

Mat Latos seemed to be on the top of his game, but as with his previous starts, he fell apart in the middle innings. He gave up all three runs in the 5th, and was pulled before reaching the 6th for the fourth time this season.

Scott Hairston saw his first action since joining the Reds yesterday. He was 0-4 with a couple of strikeouts while spot starting Brandon Phillips at second.

The Reds close out April with a record of 8-14. They'll look to start fresh in May with a three game series against the Cubs at home starting Tuesday. The Reds will face Paul Maholm (1-1, 3.33) for the second time this year--with Maholm and the Cubs winning their last meeting. Bronson Arroyo (1-2, 3.46) gets the nod for Cincinnati.
