Game 11: Astros @ Nationals 4/16/12

Nationals pound Astros, 15-4
Lineup batters inexperienced pitching staff, swats 4 HR's

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Monday night at Nationals Park was a blowout from the start, as the Nationals pounded 19 hits off of Astros pitching to earn the big win. Mike Morse led off the scoring with a big 3 run blast in the 1st inning. Danny Espinosa and Chris Hernandez followed suit in the 3rd inning, Hernandez' home run ringing off the top of the foul pole. Ryan Zimmerman homered in the 6th inning later on, the 2nd time in 2 games. Zimmerman and Werth hit 3 doubles each. Hernandez had 5 RBI's.

"I don't know where all this power came from but I like it," said manager Davey Johnson. "It was really cold last week in Chicago and New York, maybe all we needed to do was get into the milder D.C. air."

The 4 home runs by Washington matched the season team total so far this season.

Or, it may have been Astros pitching. All 4 pitchers who appeared in tonights game for Houston have earned run averages over 10.

The lop-sided win overshadowed what was an underwhelming start for Stephen Strasburg. He only struck out six batters through 7 innings and allowed 3 runs to a Houston lineup that is fairly weak.

"I gotta work on some mechanics a little more," Strasburg said. "It's only April. It's a learning process."

The Nationals get back at it at the same time tomorrow night at 7:05 as the Astros try to rebound, with Wandy Rodriguez (1-1, 3.86) going up against Gio Gonzalez (1-1, 2.77) for the Nationals.

Game 12: Astros @ Nationals 4/17/12

Astros owned by Gonzalez, shut out 5-0
Gio flirts with history, easy day at ballpark for Nationals

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It was an easy day for the Nationals today as Gio Gonzalez took a perfect game into the 6th, and a no-hitter into the 8th inning as he completed the complete game 4-hit shutout Tuesday night. He mastered the Astros lineup with ease thanks to a frustrating 2-seam/curveball combination that worked all day.

"It was nothing, really," Gio said. "I was just trying to make my pitches and I got lucky out in the field a few times, the boys made some nice plays out there."

The perfect game was lost in the 6th inning, when Gonzalez lost control of a 2-seamer that struck Matt Downs on the thigh. The sighs of a collective "Aw!" ran through the stands, but the no-hitter was still alive. He cruised through the 7th with a pair of strikeouts and a diving stop by Ian Desmond to keep the no-hitter intact.

However, with 1 out in the 8th, Chris Snyder sprayed one to deep left and it just eluded the glove of Mike Morse and dropped for the first hit of the game for the Astros. The 37,951 on hand rose to a thunderous ovation and Gonzalez tipped his cap and got back on the mound to finish what he started.

"I wasn't too mad I lost out on the no hitter," said Gonzalez. "Most importantly, we had 5 and they had 0 at the end of the ball game."

"I was a little bummed," said catcher Jesus Flores. "I wanted to be able to brag to the boys that I called a great one out there. But in all seriousness, we still got the W. We're just trying to run with this here and get some breathing room on the Phillies and Braves".

Lost amidst all the hoopla, the Nationals still scored 5 runs on the night. Mike Morse smacked one off the foul pole for a home run, and Jayson Werth launched his first round tripper of the year in the 7th, a three run shot. The Nats also stole 4 bases in the game.

The Nationals look to take the series in the 3rd game of 4 tomorrow, with Jordan Zimmermann on the hill for the Nats.

Game 13: Astros @ Nationals 4/18/12

Nationals sneak by Astros, 3-1
Norris, Zimmermann keep bats at bay Wednesday night

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Nationals rode their winning streak to 4 last night as they beat the Astros, 3-1, Wednesday night. Jordan Zimmermann went 7 innings and only allowed 1 earned run as Jayson Werth homered for the 2nd time this year, and a pair of singles gave the Nationals all the run support they needed as the listless Astros couldnt muster together a rally to get the win. The 4 game series closes out tomorrow night, as Edwin Jackson (1-0, 4.05) squares off against Jordan Lyles (1-1, 1.80) for Houston.

Game 14: Astros @ Nationals 4/19/12

Nationals 2-hit 'Stros, win 3-1
Lineup full of reserves squeak out win

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

On a lazy afternoon in Washington, the Nationals took the last game of the series with the Astros, completing the 4 game sweep, winning 3-1.

The Astros took an early lead, with a double by Jose Altuve, who later scored on a groundout by Carlos Lee. After that, the Astros were 1 hit the rest of the day.

The Nationals had a tough time solving Jordan Lyles, with their full reserve lineup in. Davey Johnson wanted to get most of the starters a day off, mainly because of the heavy schedule to start the year, especially with a favorable opponent today, with the 3-9 Astros.

"Just wanted to give some of my guys a breather," said Johnson. "I have faith in our bench. You need a good bench if you want to be successful in this league."

The Nationals found their luck in the 7th inning, when Jesus Flores doubled, Mike Morse brought him in with a pinch hit single, and Roger Bernadina smacked a 2-run single to give the Nats the lead for good. Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett notched holds, and kept their impressive 0.00 ERA's intact. Brad Lidge closed out the game for his 4th save of the year.

The Nationals win streak is stretched to five. Catch them tomorrow night as they close out their homestand with a 3 game series against the Miami Marlins, game time 7:05 p.m. Ross Detweiler goes for the Nats.

Game 15: Marlins @ Nationals 4/20/12

Gone-carlo: Slam sinks Nats
Win streak ends at 5, Nats lose 6-1

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Friday night at Nationals Park was a frustrating one, as the Nationals fell to the new-Miami Marlins, 6-1.

Ricky Nolasco threw a complete game 7-hitter, the only run coming via a Ryan Zimmerman walk in the 5th inning.

Jose Reyes got the scoring started for the Marlins in the 1st inning, when he successfully stole home thanks in aid to a wild pitch by Ross Detweiler, who took the loss only going 5 innings. It was that kind of night for the Nationals. After loading the bases in the top of the 5th, Giancarlo Stanton mashed a liner into the Nationals bullpen for a grand slam.

"As soon as I let that fastball go, I knew it was a meatball", said Detweiler. "I'm mad at myself tonight, I made some good pitches, and then I made some really dumb ones."

The homer was Stanton's 2nd of the year. The Nationals could't get the runs in during the bottom of the 8th, after a single by Mike Morse and a pinch hit double by Hideki Matsui had runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out in the inning.

The loss ends the Nationals winning streak at five. The Marlins extended their win streak to seven games.

The two teams clash again tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m., with Carlos Zambrano (1-1, 3.38) goes for Miami and the top of the rotation starts again for Washington with Stephen Strasburg (2-1, 1.66) going for the Nationals.
