MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (JUNE 16, 2014) - The Texas Rangers have made the following transactions that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Left-handed pitcher Will Lamb has been promoted to Double-A Frisco. There is no corresponding roster move at this time.

Lamb, 23, earns the promotion after less than two months with the Pelicans this season. The former Clemson Tiger is in the midst of 7 2/3 innings scoreless streak spanning five appearances and is 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA on the year. He is also two for three converting save opportunities. The southpaw began the year in Extended Spring Training and was promoted to Myrtle Beach on April 18. Over his last three outings, Lamb struck out eight Carolina Leaguers, allowed no walks, and only three base hits over five innings. In 14 outings spanning 18 2/3 innings, Lamb has struck out 25 and walked nine, allowing just five runs, all earned. The league hit .236 off of the left-hander, and left-handed batters hit just .182 (4-for-22) off of him. The Yorktown, Virginia native is in his fourth professional season and spent all of 2013 in Myrtle Beach. In 39 outings last season, Lamb was 5-3 and posted a 5.17 ERA. He was drafted by the Rangers in second round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft.

The Pelicans roster is now at 24 active players, which is one below the Carolina League limit.

Season Seats, Mini Plans, Flex Books, and single game tickets are available to see the Pelicans in 2014. Josh Hader dominated the Myrtle Beach lineup

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Cody Buckel (4-1, 2.55), Lancaster- Josh Hader (4-1, 3.22)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers fell for the first time in over a week when the Lancaster JetHawks shut out the Pelicans by a score of 6-0. The only positive of the night for Myrtle Beach came when 3B Joey Gallo continued his hit streak to 14 games. Aside from the Gallo hit, along with 4 others, Myrtle Beach was completely shut down by the arm of Josh Hader, of Lancaster, as he would toss a complete game shutout.

Things were shaky from the start for Myrtle Beach starter Cody Buckel. Lancaser Center Fielder Tanner Mathis lead off the game with a double, followed by a Carlos Correa RBI single. Danry Vasquez, the JetHawk's Left Fielder played add-on in the inning with a double and Right Fielder Dan Gulbransen hit a deep single to center, scoring two runs - all before Buckel could even record his first out. 3-0 Lancaster after one.

Things wouldn't get any better for Cody Buckel and the Pelicans in the 2nd inning. Danry Vasquez drove in Tanner Mathis on a single to right and the JetHawks would get 1 run on 3 hits.

Fast-forwarding to the 8th inning, Myrtle Beach lefty-relief pitcher Cody Ege gave up a two-run double to left to Lancaster 2B Anthony Kemp, which made the score 6-0.

The Pelicans would collect 5 hits total and be shutout for the first time in a month.

On Thursday morning, Mandalay Baseball Properties LLC, which owns the Texas Rangers Double-A Affiliate, the Frisco RoughRiders, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Myrtle Beach Pelicans Chairman and Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg, along with current RoughRiders President Scott Sonju, for the sale of the Frisco RoughRiders franchise.

The following is the press release distributed by the RoughRiders Monday afternoon:

_______________________________

FRISCO, TEXAS (JUNE 16, 2014) - Mandalay Baseball Properties LLC, owner of the Frisco RoughRiders, is pleased to announce it has entered into a definitive agreement with Chuck Greenberg and Scott Sonju for the sale of the Frisco RoughRiders franchise. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions, including the approvals of the Texas League and Minor League Baseball and the review of the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Mandalay Baseball has been the principal owner and operator of the Frisco franchise since its inception in 2003. Mr. Greenberg, who also owns the Texas Rangers' Advanced-A affiliate Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League, was the former CEO and managing partner of the Texas Rangers. He is the Chairman, CEO and Managing Partner of the newly formed Frisco RoughRiders LP, a partnership of local investors who are acquiring the RoughRiders. Mr. Sonju is the co-Managing Partner and will continue to serve as the RoughRiders' president, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the RoughRiders under Mr. Greenberg's leadership.

"We're delighted to have reached an agreement with Chuck and Scott and to know that the franchise will continue to be in very capable hands," said Art Matin, CEO of Mandalay Baseball.

Mr. Greenberg added, "This is an exciting time for us and RoughRiders fans across the Metroplex. The RoughRiders already have an outstanding operation and reputation and we are looking forward to further enhancing the fan experience at Dr Pepper Ballpark and throughout the community." Mr. Greenberg continued, "The RoughRiders have a wonderful relationship with the Texas Rangers and we look forward to helping grow future players - and fans - for the Rangers."

"Chuck brings so much to the table and we've put together a wonderful group of local partners," Mr. Sonju said. "This will not only be a seamless transition for all of our employees, sponsors and fans, but will also position the RoughRiders to thrive even more in the years ahead."

"The Rangers have enjoyed a productive and successful partnership with the Frisco RoughRiders for the last 12 years," said Jon Daniels, Texas Rangers President of Baseball Operations. "We look forward to continuing that strong relationship with Chuck and Scott and their new ownership group. Our affiliation with Chuck's group in Myrtle Beach has been outstanding and we congratulate them on the Frisco purchase."

Mr. Daniels added, "At the same time, the Rangers want to thank Mandalay Baseball for their leadership in Frisco. Under their operation, the RoughRiders have become one of the top franchises in the minor leagues and we are proud to have been associated with them.

"In addition, we congratulate RoughRiders manager Jason Wood and all of the RoughRiders for advancing to the Texas League playoffs for the eighth time in 12 years."

"This is wonderful news for the citizens and businesses of Frisco and the entire region," Frisco Mayor Maher Maso said. "The RoughRiders have been outstanding community partners and now being under local ownership will create even more opportunities."

All terms of the agreement are confidential.

Eastbound & Down Gear Available at Pro Shop

Dress Like Kenny Powers and the Myrtle Beach Mermen

KP on sale.jpg

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - A week after Kenny Powers announced his return to Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach, the Pelicans now have a full stock of show gear at the Pelicans Pro Shop and online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
With New Era 59/50 on-field style, show inspired hats already in stock, the Pro Shop has added Carolina blue Kenny Powers' Myrtle Beach Mermen t-shirt jerseys and white 'Eastbound & Down' inscribed t-shirt jerseys. Kenny Powers bobbleheads and pint glasses will become available in the coming weeks. Everything is officially licensed merchandise of the show.

The Mermen t-shirt, made to reflect Powers' new team, is screen printed with a script Myrtle Beach Mermen logo on the front and "Powers 55" screen printed in block lettering on the back. The white t-shirt has the 'Eastbound & Down' logo screen printed on the front and "Powers 55" screen printed on the back. Both are 100% cotton.

The hat designs feature a light blue and white script 'MB' logo on a navy blue fitted body. There is also a light blue New Era logo over the left ear. Hat sizes range from six and 5/8 inches to eight inches.

"There's been a lot of energy around 'Eastbound & Down' and the show's presence at the ballpark," said Pelicans Merchandise Manager Dan Bailey. "We had a great opportunity to witness the show's filming at the park and adding to our options in the Pro Shop just helps fans share in that excitement."

The third season of 'Eastbound & Down' was filmed, in part, at Pelicans Ballpark. Myrtle Beach has welcomed Kenny back with open arms and although he doesn't play a huge part on the team, his presence certainly has been known.

Pelicans single game tickets, season tickets, flex Books and mini-plans for the 2012 season are now on sale at the Pelicans Ballpark offices or by calling (843) 918-6000. Normal box office hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm.

4-run 8th inning kills Pelicans as 4 game set gets split evenly

Brandon Meredith's 3-run homer was the difference maker against Myrtle Beach in game 4 of the series

Pitching matchup: Myrtle Beach- Luis Parra (2-1, 3.86), Lancaster- Vincent Velasquez (1-3, 3.22)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers got beat by one run in game four of an away series at Lancaster on Friday night, despite a great effort by 3B prospect Joey Gallo, who extended his hit streak to 15 games by homering twice. Read further for details on the contest.

Myrtle Beach and Joey Gallo got off to a red hot start in this one. In the 2nd inning, Mr. Joey Gallo lead off with a solo jack to right. After an Alberto Truinfel (SS) ground out, catcher David Lyon singled to center. One batter later, Lyon stole second and CF Zach Cone homered to center, giving the Birds an early 3-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach lefty starter Luis Parra was pretty solid all night long, but he was tagged for his only two runs of the game in the 4th inning as he gave up 2 runs on a double with two outs. 3-2, Myrtle Beach.

Skipping ahead to the 8th inning, which featured THIS Joey Gallo monster home run to right. See how sweet it is below:

That put the road team Pelicans ahead by 2 runs, but that wouldn't be enough to hold off the JetHawks . Manager Massey and his sidekick Kenny Powers decided to turn the ball over to righty relief pitcher Kason Knapp for the bottom half of the 8th inning, with one out. Lancaster LF Danry Vasquez got the job done with a sac fly after a lead off single and before you knew it, Lancaster had runners on 1st and 3rd with only one out. Lancaster's DH for the evening, Brandon Meredith, worked a 2-2 count before blasting the game's deciding blow in to the left field bleachers, which gave the JetHawks their first lead in the ballgame.

The top of the 9th saw Myrtle Beach make things interesting. Catcher David Lyon and Left Fielder Nick Williams both singled to kick-start the top half of the final inning. After Zach Cone struck out, Nick Williams was picked off at first, which killed the Pelicans' momentum. 1B for the evening, Preston Beck then flied to left for an RBI single, scoring Lyon and the Pelicans were within 1 run, but that's all the JetHawk bullpen would allow.

Pelican Standouts
3B- Joey Gallo: 3-4 (extended hit streak to 15 games), 2 HR, 2B
C- David Lyon: 2-3, 2 R
CF- Zach Cone: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, 1 R
SP- Luis Parra: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
RP (L)- Jason Knapp: 0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER

Final Score.jpg
Myrtle Beach 5, Lancaster 6

GALLO GETS THE CALL
By Nathan Barnett / Myrtle Beach Pelicans

060814_Gallo_Gonz_Promoted_MW_im0i9ckk_4vxtn1kg.jpg
Joey Gallo joins Chi Chi Gonzalez in Double-A Frisco after two outstanding months on the Grand Strand.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Texas Rangers have made the following transaction that affect the roster of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Third baseman Joey Gallo has been promoted to Double-A Frisco.

Gallo leaves as the team leader in a handful of offensive statistical categories and shares the professional lead in homers with 21.

Gallo, 20, earns his first promotion to Double-A after two months with the Pelicans. The slugger departs the Carolina League as the league leader in home runs (21), RBI (50), runs scored (53), on-base percentage (.463), slugging (.735), walks (51), and is third in the league in hitting (.323). He averaged a home run every nine at-bats, by far the best pace in the league. His total of 51 walks this season has already set a new career-high for him in a single season. Gallo has the best slugging percentage, OPS (1.199), and the most walks among all active and qualifying minor leaguers. Despite a season with the Birds of just 58 games, Gallo is tied for the fourth most home runs in a season by a Myrtle Beach hitter. He is also eighth on the team's all-time career home run list. He led all of minor league baseball with 40 home runs last season. He hit multiple homers in a game five times this season, including two three-homer games, and has 14 multi-homer games in his three-year professional career.

Gallo_Joey_.jpg

The Henderson, Nevada native was selected by the Rangers in the first round of the 2012 Draft out of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. He was a lock-in for the All-Star game, but won't stick around in single-A long enough to play in it. Both Gallo and Gonzalez looked to be on their way of being elected to the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game, now neither will appear.

"It's a bittersweet day for me, and the whole Myrtle Beach Pelicans organization", says Myrtle Beach Manager and VP, C. Massey. "I've never seen a talent like him in the minor leagues and he was the key to our offense here in Myrtle Beach. With him as our leader, we were a playoff team. Now, other players have to carry the torch if we want to see post-season action this year. We can do it, but we'll miss Gallo".
