Bucs Lose McCutchen
McCutchen left the game in the eighth after catching a ball in center field.
PITTSBURGH -- Andrew McCutchen is out.
The 23-year old center fielder, who came in fourth in rookie of the year voting last year, left the game in the eighth inning of last night's match versus the Diamondbacks after laying out in center field to make a catch.
Although the injury did not look severe at first glance and that his removal was simply a precaution, manager John Russell announced today that McCutchen would miss the next 1-2 months with a fractured ankle.
McCutchen has hit only for a .100 average this season, but has shown some defensive prowess, being able to make catches unimaginable to the other outfielders.
"He's one of the best young players I've seen in my career," said veteran outfielder Brian Giles. "It's going to be awful missing him from our lineup, but I hope that someone else can step in and do pretty well."
Along with the injury came a flurry of transactions.
After the Pirates placed McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list, they optioned pitcher Javier Lopez to AAA Indianapolis, placing him on waivers, and designated pitcher Donnie Veal for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster. The Buccos then recalled outfielder Brandon Moss from AAA Indy and purchased the contract of outfielder Jonathan Van Every.
Moss, who was acquired in 2008 from the Boston Red Sox in the infamous Jason Bay trade, has pretty much failed to live up to any expectations. With the Pirates in 2009, the 26-year old right fielder hit just .236/.306/.364 with seven home runs and 41 RBI, though scouts believe that he has the ability to hit for a lot more power than he has shown.
Van Every was signed by the Pirates in July of last year after being released by the Boston Red Sox. With Pawtucket, Boston's AAA affiliate, in 2009, Every hit for a disappointing .215/.378/.462.
Until McCutchen gets back, the lineups will likely face a lot of rotation, as the Buccos do not have a solid center fielder who can surely take his place. For now, however, here is their lineup:
1. Aki Iwamura 2B
2. Garrett Jones 1B
3. Ryan Doumit C
4. Brian Giles LF
5. Ryan Church CF
6. Andy LaRoche 3B
7. Lastings Milledge RF
8. Ronny Cedeno SS
