Mets finish road trip on high note, defeat Brewers
July 27, 2014

Milwaukee- On a hot afternoon, the Mets provided a cool breeze to the fans in Milwaukee, recording 17 strikeouts at the plate, a season high. Offensively the Mets looked their worst this season. They had two runs on four hits. Daniel Murphy went back to back starts with four strikeouts. Travis d'Arnaud went hitless in his first game as starting catcher. Five different players had two or more strikeouts. Oh, and did I mention the 17 strikeouts as a team?
But it was all irrelevant because a leadoff double from Eric Campbell, a wild pitch from Jim Henderson, and a Juan Lagares sac fly in the 10th inning sent the Mets back home on a winning note.
The Mets looked overmatched from the start. Matt Garza (7-5, 3.26) struck out the first four batters he faced, before Campbell squeaked a ground ball through the left side of the infield. He would finish the day going 7.0 IP, giving up three H hits and one run while striking out 12 batters. The one mistake all day was sent over the right center field fence by Lucas Duda.
Not to be outdone, Zack Wheeler (10-5, 3.20) pitched a great game as well. Over 7.0 IP, Zack gave up one run on four hits. He also had a mistake sent over the fence by Brewers' LF Ron Davis.
Mets' manager took notice of Zack's performance.
"He kept us in the game. He's the reason we're in the position we are right now heading into the trade deadline," Collins had to say of his young ace. A great performance by the bullpen kept the Brewers in check, until the Mets rally in the 10th inning to steal away this game.
Jenrry Mejia celebration.jpgAfter struggling yesterday, All-Star CP Jenrry Mejia shut the door and the series on the Brew Crew.
"It was nasty. I haven't felt that bad at the plate since I was first called up to the majors. He made us look silly," said Murphy of Garza's stuff. Daniel's frustrations are getting to him as his average dropped below .230 for the first time all season. Back-to-back games with four strikeouts for the second baseman is a new low. I hope he finds his swing, the Mets are gonna need it down the stretch.
On a positive note, SS Starlin Castro had an unbelievable day in the field. After struggling for the last week, he made every play, including several difficult ones to keep the Brewers off the base paths.
The Mets head home for the first time since the All-Star break to face the Philadelphia Phillies. They finished the road trip with a 4-6 mark, a promising figure after an abysmal 0-5 start.
3 UP Eric Campbell- Had a strong game with two hits. Also sparked the 10th inning rally. Zack Wheeler- Strong outing kept the Mets in the game. Jenrry Mejia- Shut the door in the 9th.
3 DOWN Guess who?- 4 more strikeouts for the struggling vet. Chris Young- 3 strikeouts after a 4/4 day yesterday. Travis d'Arnaud- Hitless in first game as everyday catcher.

Bobby Abreu retires, sticks with team as Assistant Hitting Coach
July 28, 2014
Jack Cole
New York-Bobby Abreu, Terry Collins, and Sandy Alderson were all present in a press conference called shortly after the Mets arrived in New York this morning from their road trip.
"I am officially announcing my retirement from the game of baseball," an emotional, but satisfied Abreu opened with. "I have had a long and wonderful career, and Terry, Sandy, and I have discussed the fact that I am more helpful to the team in a coaching role. I am in 100% agreement with them."
Abreu's career numbers for his 17 year career before his current stint with the Mets looked like this: .292 BA, 288 HR, 2465 H, and 574 2B.
This year Abreu is averaging .246 with 1 HR and 8 RBI in limited playing time. His role this year has been a pinch hitter against righties with an occasional start in LF.
"I look forward to helping the young players on this team mature. This team has the potential to be special," Abreu smiled. The Mets are dead last in the Majors in RBI and HR and rank 25th in BA. Collins is hoping that Abreu, a professional hitter, can mentor the guys and hopefully get 2B Daniel Murphy out of his month-long slump.
"We believe that this move best suits our vision for the future, as well as provides a respected voice in the dugout," stated GM Sandy Alderson.
Collins also announced that 2B Daniel Murphy would be swapping places with Wright in the order, and moving down to the 5 hole. He is hoping that the move back in the order will take some of the pressure off Murph and let him get back to basics.
The Mets will recall LF Kirk Nieuwenhuis from AAA Las Vegas.

Few days before the trade deadline! Might be looking to move Chris Young or Eric Young Jr. If you guys have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Chris Young has had a good year in a back up role. .267 with 10 HR and 23 RBI.
EYJ has over performed and is second in NL in SB. He was hitting over .300 for most of the year but has really cooled off.
Was hoping I may be able to get something for one/both of them since I don't see them in my long term plans, and I plan to begin starting Kirk in LF, which would make them both bench guys.
Any tips or advice is appreciated.
Hope those who are following are enjoying so far. I know I am
