Series 2
(Kansas City Outfielders run in after a win in game 2)
Game 1
The Twins are in the World Champions building, and you could tell today. They were intimidated, and if there is one thing in baseball you can’t do, it is play intimidated.
Soft tossing left-hander Tommy Milone took the mound after winning the job in spring training. However, it wasn’t a good day for him. Milone allowed four hits in six innings of work, and three runs, two of which were earned. He only struck out three, which is going to be a number we will be tracking all year.
It wasn’t any better of a day for Ryan Pressly who just recorded one out, but allowed three hits and two runs. Trevor May cleaned up, but it wasn’t pretty either. He allowed two hits, and two runs, but neither were earned.
The defense wasn’t being much help to the struggling pitchers as Trevor Plouffe and Kurt Suzuki both had errors in today’s game. The lone bright spot of the game came from Korea turned MLB pro Byung-Ho Park. Park hit a solo shot in the 7th inning, giving the Twins their only run of the game. Milone falls to 0-1 on the year, and the Twins are back to .500 baseball.
Tomorrow we may see a new line-up from manager Paul Molitor who said in the post game that the offense needed to get going. Don’t be surprised if something changed tomorrow, for better or worse. He has already announced that John Ryan Murphy will be catching tomorrow, but that is probably because of fatigue, more than Kurt Suzuki being bad.
Game 2
Manager Paul Molitor wasn’t kidding yesterday when he said that he was going to try to change up the lineup to kickstart somethings but it did not seem to work. The Twin’s offense was once again shut down, today only going for two hits, and when you don’t score you can’t win the ballgame.
Rick Nolasco pitched a gem in his first start of the year going 6.1 innings, and only allowed 4 hits. The one run was not even earned, and was caused because of a Brian Dozier error in the 3rd inning. The ball was hit directly at Dozier, and he bobbled the ball which allowed a baserunner. The next man up, Kendrys Morales hit a double down the left field line, scoring Alcides Escobar.
The Twins got good production out of their bullpen once again, with Fernando Abad going 1.1 innings, not allowing any baserunners. Trevor May came in to get the last out of the eight with a lazy fly to right.
The first baserunner for the Twins came in the 3rd inning via a single from Eduardo Nunez. Nunez then stole a base, his first of the year. The next baserunner didn’t come until the eighth inning when Brian Dozier lined a single up the middle. Dozier also stole a base, but didn’t make it past second.
Ian Kennedy improved to 1-0 on the year after winning the game 1-0. The two teams will wrap up the series with Ervin Santana squaring off with Kris Medlen.
Game 3
After dropping the first two games to the Kansas City Royals, and the offense only putting up two runs in the entire series the Twins knew they were going to have to do something to take a win back north to Minnesota.
The Twins offense did manage to do just enough, and that was by doubling their runs from the total series, scoring 2 runs, winning by a shutout.
The offense was powered by Oswaldo Arcia who hit two dingers in the ballgame. The first homer was in the fourth inning, a long shot to right, while the second was a wallscraper in the ninth inning. Arcia is just hitting .176 this year, but today the team needed him.
Speaking of low batting averages the Twins have four other player’s below .200. Those 4 players are Brian Dozier (.083), Byung-Ho Park (.190), Kurt Suzuki (.187), and Byron Buxton (.133).
It is being reported the Twins are growing tired of the poor hitting, and if these players keep it up one or two more series the organization will either bench the player for a long period of time, or send them down.
The two obvious choices for being sent down would be Byung-Ho Park and Byron Buxton. Park came from Korea this off-season and many fans expected this early. He might not be ready to hit major league pitching at this time. A replacement for him could be Kennys Vargas, a big switch hitting first basemen.
The other man, Byron Buxton is also in the same hole as Park. Byron is still young, but is supposed to be the next Trout. He sure isn’t hitting like it, and right now the only thing keeping him in the lineup is his defense. There are two potential replacements for Byron, one in veteran David Murphy, and one in the young German star Max Kepler.
The Twins are now 3-3 and have their home opener tomorrow afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox come into the game with a 5-2 record. Kyle Gibson (0-0) will face Carlos Rendon (0-1) in game one of the match-up.
Player of the Series: LF Oswaldo Arcia - 2-8 (.250), 2 HR’s, and 2 RBI’s
