The New York Yankees got a gem from Masahiro Tanaka today, as he pitched a three hit shutout to lead the Yankees to a 1-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox in New York.

Matt Holliday hit a home run in the 5th inning off Sox starter A.J. Velazquez, who also pitched brilliantly in the losing effort.

Tanaka inproved to 13-5, and Velazquez fell to 10-10 on the year. The two teams drew even again in the standings, tied for 2nd place in the AL East; and tied for the American League wildcard lead.

The Red Sox will head home tomorrow for a three game set against the East leading Toronto Blue Jays.

Re: Boston Red Sox dynasty (MLB17)

After being shut out 1-0 yesterday by Marco Estrada, the Boston Red Sox bounced back and beat the first place Toronto Blue Jays with a thrilling 6-5 come from behind victory.

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead on a Troy Tulowitzki home run in the first inning, and the teams would go back and forth until the 7th inning, when Toronto would move ahead 5-3.

Boston would close the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the 7th, but it was a big strike from designated hitter Andre Johnson in the bottom of the 8th that would give Boston the victory. Johnson blasted one into the Monster seats on a 2-1 pitch from Jason Grilli, his 2nd homer of the game, giving the Sox the one run edge.

Closer Felix Thompson would come out to pitch a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 39th save. The teams will battle back tomorrow in the rubber match of the series with lefty Doug Figeuroa (13-7) going against Marcus Stroman (11-9) for Toronto.

Re: Boston Red Sox dynasty (MLB17)

As the MLB season is drawing to a close, the Boston Red Sox find themselves in a battle for both the wild card, and the AL East division.

Currently trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 4.5 games with just 7 to play, Boston will enter a 3 game series with Toronto at home tonight with their top starter Harvey Graham (14-8) on the mound.

Boston is 84-71, with 7 games to play, all at home. 3 against the Blue Jay, and then a 4 game set against the Houston Astros, who at 77-79 are nearly out of post-season contention.

Around the league, the Cleveland Indians hold a 5 game lead over Detroit in the Central, and the Anaheim Angels have clinched the AL West.

There are likely four teams in the running for the AL wildcard, with Boston holding the top spot, the New York Yankees 2.5 behind in the 2nd spot, and both Detroit and Baltimore still fighting.

Re: Boston Red Sox dynasty (MLB17)

The Boston Red Sox jumped out to an early lead and starter Harvey Graham shut down the division leading Toronto Blue Jays as the Sox cruised to a 6-2 victory last night in the opening game of their three game series at Fenway Park.

Graham won his 15th game, going 7 innings and striking out 12, while shortstop Nathan Wade and designated hitter Andre Johnson drove in two runs apiece. Left fielder Sam Cooper broke out of his 12 game power slump, hitting his 21st homerun of the year.

With the victory, the Sox closed to 3 1/2 games of the division lead, with two games left against Toronto, and just six games left on the year.

Re: Boston Red Sox dynasty (MLB17)

Perfection!!

The Boston Red Sox beat Toronto 1-0 to complete a sweep of the first place Jays and move within 1.5 games with just four left to play in the season. Pitcher Scott McClure threw a perfect game for Boston striking out 12 batters.

Marco Estrada was very good for the Blue Jays, pitching 7 innings and letting up only one run, but McClure was untouchable, the Sox third starter improved his season record to 10-11, and helped Boston clinch a wild card berth on his special night.

This is only the 2nd perfect game thrown in Boston Red Sox history, the first was by none other than Cy Young, in 1904. It is the 19th no-hitter in franchise history as well.

The Red Sox will close the season out with four games against the lowly Houston Astros, while Toronto will head to the Bronx to play three games against the Yankees, who are still battling for the last wild card spot in the American League.

Re: Boston Red Sox dynasty (MLB17)

Heading into the final game of the season, the Boston Red Sox will have to win to have any chance at the Division crown, they will also need help from their long time rival New York Yankees, as the divsion leading Jays will face off at Yankee Stadium tomorrow and will have to lose for Boston to have a shot.

The Sox may have blown their only chance yesterday, as team ace Harvey Graham blew up and let up 7 runs to the 3rd place Houston Astros. But the silver lining is that the team has already qualified for the playoffs, and at worst will host the Wild Card game.

Who they play is also still up for grabs, as the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers enter the day tied at 85-76. Baltimore is in Tampa, and Detroit playing at Minnesota, two very winnable games, which may end up forcing a tiebreaker.

The story in the National League is just as complex heading into the last day of play. The Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs have clinched their divisions; but the West is up for grabs, as the Dodgers & Giants are still tied with one to play. Both teams will make the playoffs though, one as the division winning and the other as the top wild card team.

The second NL wild card right now belongs to the New York Mets, but they only hold a one game lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates, so that could be different by the end of the day as one of those teams will go on, and the other will go home.
