August 27, 2020 | MIAMI, FL

The Chicago Cubs won their league-best 50th game on the road Friday night as they topped the Marlins in Miami, 6-4. Kyle Schwarber smashed a go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the 10th to give the Cubs the lead and Craig Kimbrel notched his 38th save of the year as the Cubs took two of three from the Marlins.

"We've gotten great production at the plate all year and there's always someone that seems to step up in big moments," said Kyle Scharber after the game. "We know we're never out of a ballgame, no matter the score."

Tyler Chatwood made his first start since being activated from the injured list, completing five innings in a no-decision. The Cubs fell behind early but a three-run sixth and the homer by Schwarber in the 9th propelled the Cubs to the win.

The Cubs will continue their road trip tomorrow when they take on the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Mets currently hold the second wild card spot while the Cubs have a strong 11.5 game lead in the NL central division. The Cubs improve to 84-50 on the year and the magic number for a division title sits at 18.

Kyle Hendricks (13-5, 3.93) will start for the Cubs to open the series against the Mets. Steven Matz (12-7, 3.85) will be on the hill for the Mets.

"The series [against the Mets] should be an exciting one," said Cubs skipper David Ross. "We're late in the season and both clubs have postseason aspirations. It makes for some fun baseball and we look forward to the challenge."

August 30, 2020 | QUEENS, NY

Willson Contreras blasted a grand slam in the top of the fifth as the Cubs routed the New York Mets at Citi Field Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs jumped out in front early as Anthony Rizzo knocked a two-run homer in the top of the first inning off of Mets ace Jacob de Grom. Kris Bryant followed suit an inning later, hammering a two-run shot of is own. Jose Quintana earned his 10th win of the season, completing six innings allowing just two runs.

The Cubs have won five consecutive games and eight of their last nine games as they head back home to Wrigley Field for a three game series against the San Francisco Giants. Jon Lester (10-8, 3.84) will face former Chicago Cub Jeff Samardizja (8-16, 4.04) Monday night to open the series. With the win over the Mets the Cubs improve to 87-50 and shrink their magic number to 13 for the division.

"We just have to keep things rolling," said Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber after the game. "We're entering the final phase of the season and we're right where we want to be. We just have to keep playing our game and not try to do too much."

The Cubs will have to do without the services of Jason Kipnis for a couple weeks after he pulled a muscle on a diving during the seventh inning. Nico Hoerner is expected to be called-up to replace Kipnis on the roster.
