Sonny Gray stymied one of the top offenses in the American League en route to a 4-2 victory, improving the Reds record to 15-13.

Gray worked around nine hits over eight innings of work, only surrendering two runs. He walked one and struck out nine to improve his record to (3-0).

White Sox starter Dylan Cease was not at his sharpest but was able to limit the damage. He gave up two runs on six hits in six innings of work. He walked five and struck out three in the no-decision.

Mike Moustakas was able to break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 8th after hitting a solo shot off of White Sox reliever Aaron Bummer. Moustakas finished the day 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Nick Castellanos also had a big day for the Reds, going 2-for-3 with a solo shot and two runs scored.

Lucas Sims pitched a 1-2-3 inning, earning his seventh save of the season.

Rain was forecasted today for Great American Ballpark, and yes there was a one-hour rain delay tonight. Unfortunately for the Reds, it came in the third inning. If you delete everything that happened before the rain delay, the Reds would've won the game. Unfortunately, the first inning happened.

The White Sox jumped all over Reds' starter Wade Miley, as Miley was unable to finish the first inning. The Reds pulled Miley after facing nine hitters, giving up six runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out one in 2/3 of an inning pitched.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito wasn't exactly at his best but did overpower several Reds hitters. Giolito gave up five runs on five hits in six innings of work, walking one and striking out 11.

The White Sox lineup gave a well-rounded effort with every player but one collecting at least one hit. The pick of the bunch would be LF Andrew Vaughn, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and two walks. The one player who failed to get a hit, CF Luis Robert, tied an American League record by going 0-for-5 with five strikeouts.

The Reds did try to get back into the game late, with Aristides Aquino launching a pinch-hit two-run blast in the 7th to cut the lead to 8-5. In the 9th inning, Tyler Stephenson and Scott Heineman hit back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 8-6. With the tying run at the plate, Jesse Winker lined out to second and Joey Votto flashed that warning track power flying out to right to end the threat.

Cleveland (20-12)0312001007100
W: Heath Hembree (1-0) L: Trevor Stephan (0-1) S: Lucas Sims (8)

The Reds were hopeful for another masterful start from Luis Castillo. They didn't get that at all, but the bats showed up at Progressive Field. Mike Moustakas' grand slam in the 7th inning put the Reds up for good, as the bullpen only gave up one run over the final five innings to secure a 10-7 victory over the Indians.

Luis Castillo looked good in the 1st inning, getting two strikeouts and a fly-out. In the 2nd inning though, the Reds' defense resembled the Bad News Bears with errors by Christian Colon and Nick Castellanos as well as a passed ball by Tucker Barnhart. That seemed to get to Castillo's psyche, as he struggled through the rest of his start. Castillo gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings of work. He walked three and struck out four in the no-decision.

Things didn't go much better for Indians' starter Logan Allen, who had his worst start of the season. Allen was chased out of the game in the 3rd inning after giving up a three-run homer to Joey Votto. Allen gave up five runs on six hits in two-plus innings of work. He walked one and struck out one in the no-decision.

Moustakas played a huge role in the Reds' comeback, hitting a solo shot in the 6th inning to tie the game at 6-6, and then busting the game open with the grand slam in the 7th inning. Moustakas was 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs. Joey Votto also had a big game, going 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Jesse Winker also joined in on the fun, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Indians announced after that game that Cal Quantrill was activated from the IL and will be starting tomorrow. Zach Plesac's start has been pushed back to Sunday.

Tyler Mahle came off the injured list in a big way, throwing a gem to lead the Reds to a 5-1 victory over the Indians in his first start in nearly a month.

Mahle had command of all his pitches, fooling the Indians while only giving up two hits over seven shutout innings. Mahle only had one walk while striking out seven hitters to improve his record to (3-1).

Cal Quantrill was also coming off the injured list to make his first start in a couple of weeks. Quantrill gave up four runs on five hits in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out four to drop his record to (1-3).

Nick Castellanos paced the Reds' offense, going 2-for-4 with a homer, an RBI, and two runs scored.

After the game, the Reds announced a couple of roster moves. The Reds activated SP Jeff Hoffman from the injured list and designated Ryan Merrit for assignment. David Bell announced that Hoffman would get the start in tomorrow's series finale. The Reds also announced that CF Nick Senzel was being activated from the bereavement list and that CF Scott Heineman was being optioned to Triple-A Louisville.

W: Amir Garrett (1-0) L: Ross Detwiler (0-1) S: Ian Kennedy (1)

The Reds had to weather several storms late in the game, but in the end, the Reds had enough moxie to see off the Indians to complete the three-game sweep.

Jeff Hoffman was very solid in his return from a sprained elbow, giving up two runs on four hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four in what should've been his second victory of the season. The ball was given to Amir Garrett for the 7th inning, who has given up only one run in his last ten appearances. Garrett recorded three strikeouts in the inning, but in between those were a walk and two hits, including a game-tying three-run homer by Indians' LF Harold Ramirez.

Cincinnati used timely hitting in the 8th inning, with Nick Senzel stroking a two-run single to put the Reds back in front. Garrett came back out for the 8th inning but walked the lead-off hitter. The Reds went to Tejay Antone, who was not sharp at all. Antone allowed the inherited runner to score but managed to get out of the inning without further damage.

The Reds were able to tack on three runs in the 9th, but with Lucas Sims having pitched three times in the last five days, he was ruled unavailable. Antone was brought back out for the 9th to try and close the game down but allowed two base runners in three hitters faced. With the game on the line, David Bell turned to Ian Kennedy, and the veteran forced two ground outs to pick up his first save of the season.

Indians starter Zach Plesac was unspectacular today, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5 and 2/3 innings pitched. He walked one and struck out four in the no-decision.

Reds pitching failed to get Harold Ramirez out today, as he did everything he could to win the game for the Indians by himself. Ramirez was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, and four RBIs. Unfortunately, nobody else really impacted the game for the Indians.

The Reds offense was paced by Eugenio Suarez, who went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)

Team Headlines

Coming off a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians, the Reds are one of the hottest teams in all of baseball, with a record of 8-2 over the last ten games. What has spurned this hot streak? You can't really point to the schedule, as the Reds have played the Dodgers, White Sox, and Indians, all teams with at least 20 wins. It's definitely not the pitching, with the Reds staff ranking 9th in the NL with a staff ERA of 4.66 versus 2nd last season with a staff ERA of 3.84.

The offense though is greatly approved. Following hitting coach Alan Zinter's admission that they focused too much on launch angles and home runs in their approach to 2020, the approach for 2021 was to focus on solid contact and hitting line drives. After finishing near the bottom of all major hitting statistics except for home runs last season, the Reds' offense this year is more well-rounded.

Nick Castellanos is raking the ball right. The Reds' right fielder is currently on a 17-game on-base streak dating back to April 18th. Over that period, Castellanos has raised his batting average from .283 to .363 and his OPS from .918 to 1.155. After the disappointing 2020, the Reds are ecstatic that Castellanos is getting back and even exceeding the form he showed in the second half of 2019 when he was traded to the Chicago Cubs.

Nick Senzel has reached base in every game he has played in. The main thing for the Reds is figuring out how to keep him in the lineup. Senzel has only played in 12 of the Reds' 32 games due to injuries and personal issues. Senzel is slashing .385/.439/.615 in those games.

The bats were ice cold today for the Pirates at PNC Park. Reds' starter Sonny Gray kept the Pirates off-balance all day, shutting them out in an 8-0 victory. In a fine outing, the 31-year-old hurler allowed five hits while striking out four and walking three.

Pirates' starter Mitch Keller was able to keep pace with Gray through the first four innings of the game, but the wheels came off in the 5th inning. After loading the bases with only one out, Gray helped out his cause by smashing a ground ball past the diving shortstop to break the 0-0 deadlock. Christian Colon followed up with a line drive base hit to right to give the Reds the 2-0 lead and then Jesse Winker drew the bases-loaded walk to give the Reds the 3-0 lead.

Keller lasted until the 6th inning before being chased out of the game by a solo shot by Moustakas. Keller gave up four runs on six hits in 5 and 1/3 innings pitched. He walked five and struck out only one-hitter to drop his record to 1-2.

Moustakas paced the Reds offense today, going 3-for-4 with two solo home runs and three runs scored. Winker had the other performance of the day, going 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.

Gray needed 111 pitches to complete the shutout, his first since 2015 with the Athletics. Gray improved his record to a perfect 4-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.51.

W: Tyler Anderson (6-1) L: Wade Miley (4-2) S: Richard Rodriguez (10)

The Pirates topped the Reds by the score of 8-5, with the largest share of the credit going to second baseman Kevin Newman. Newman went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk while scoring three times for the Pirates. Tyler Anderson earned the win to go to 6-1. He allowed two runs on seven hits, with two walks and six strikeouts in 6 and 1/3 innings pitched. Richard Rodriguez pitched a topsy-turvy 9th inning where the Reds managed to get the tying run to the plate. However, on a full count with two outs, Rodriguez struck out Mike Moustakas to earn his 10th save of the season.

Wade Miley struggled with command right out of the gates, as the Pirates jumped all over Miley to score four runs in the 1st inning. Things didn't get much better from there and Miley was gone after only registering one out in the 3rd inning. Miley gave up six runs on six hits, with two walks and two strikeouts in 2 and 1/3 innings pitched to drop his record to 4-2.

Former Red Todd Frazier was a menace to his former club today, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Reds reliever Sean Doolittle was pulled out of the game after complaining of shoulder soreness. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

The Pirates grabbed a 7-3 win over the Reds at PNC Park. Pittsburgh left fielder Anthony Alford went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in two runs and scored once. Pirates starter Chad Kuhl picked up his first win of the season, improving his record to 1-1. Kuhl gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings of work, working around five walks and striking out two.

The Pirates took the lead for good in the 5th inning when Alford hit a two-run homer off of Reds starter Ryan Merritt. Merritt gave up five runs on nine hits in 4 and 2/3 innings pitched. He walked three and struck out two to drop his record to 0-3.

Colin Moran was 3-for-5 today for the Pirates with an RBI and a run scored.

The Reds had multiple chances to get back into this game, but they grounded into three rally-killing double plays and stranded eight men on base.
