Orlando Magic 2011 Draft Review: Magic make big moves on draft night.

Orlando Magic 2011 Draft Review: Magic make big moves on draft night.

The Magic ended up acquiring acquiring a first round pick tonight, in exchange for Quentin Richardson. Richardson was traded to the Bulls for the draft rights to the 30th pick in the draft, Jimmy Butler. Not finished there, GM Phil Jackson traded his 2nd round pick with Brandon Bass for his former player Lamar Odom.

Odom looked to be on the outs in Los Angeles with the first round sweep against the Mavericks. Odom fits the bill with Orlando as a stretch four facilitator alongside Hedo Turkoglu and Dwight Howard. The formula worked for the Magic with Rashard Lewis previously. Odom has 2 years and 17million remaining on his contract, but his second year is a team option. This is a low risk high reward move for the Magic.

With the last pick in the first round, the Magic picked Jimmy Butler, a 6'8" forward from Marquette. Butler made headlines as draft time neared because of his story. Butler was homeless as a 14-year-old until a family took him in. The ESPN draft coverage team said that Butler faxed his letter of intent to play at Marquette from a McDonald's.

Butler plays exactly how you want guys to play. Overall he's just a hardworking basketball player. He made a living at Marquette off of playing tenacious defense and doing the right things on offense. He plays off of his teammates and is an extremely unselfish basketball player. Butler has decent footspeed and enough length to guard the small forward position effectively.

The big problem that I have with Butler is that he doesn't have much range on his jumper, which makes him a questionable fit in Stan Van Gundy's 3 point happy offense, but maybe that will change now with Phil Jackson's influence.

That said, there's no reason he couldn't develop a shot now. He developed a decent mid-range game during his time at Butler in fact. However, until he does that, he will only be a role player, and perhaps he always will be. Of course, there's nothing wrong with getting a solid role player with the 30th pick in a weak draft.

He might actually get some burn since he's a Stan Van Gundy kind of player: defensive minded, hardworking, unselfish, and team oriented. Even though he's not a shooting guard answer, he still will likely be a fan favorite in Orlando because of his tenacity and story.

All in all, just taking a quick glance at what the Magic did in this draft, I feel like they addressed some needs. Orlando needed a young, rangy defender and got that in Butler. They also picked up a stretch four facilitator Jackson trusts in Lamar Odom. Odom could work very well with Dwight Howard this year.

Breaking News: NBA Lockout Ends.

Breaking News: NBA Lockout Ends.

"Hello everyone I’m David Aldridge. The NBA lockout is officially over. This one has come right at the last possible moment, with games through Christmas reportedly due to be cancelled. The NBA and NBPA have finally settled on the last major issue separating the sides.

After going unpaid for the first week of November, and the NBA giving the NBPA an ultimatum, the players finally accepted a 50/50 split with the owners. After all seemed lost they called a meeting of the owners and players this morning to negotiate the remaining key issues.

They have come to an agreement that is reported to be in place for the next 10 years, with opt outs after year 6 and 8 for the players. Full details on the agreement haven’t surfaced yet but it is confirmed, the NBA is back ladies and gentlemen. David Stern and Billy Hunter are about to make a statement to the press shortly."

Lockout ends - CBA agreed upon.

Lockout ends - CBA agreed upon.

"Billy Hunter and I are proud to announce that the lockout has ended. I want to congratulate the NBPA and the NBA owners on successfully reaching a deal. I would also like to thank George Cohen in his role as mediator which helped both parties understand each other and ultimately laid the ground work for a deal.

We want to apologize to the people who’s livelihood depend on the NBA. As well as the fans who had to endure this. We had a few close calls in October, but we are glad November went so much better. We still have to work out a way of scheduling a season, but our fixtures department are working hard on this at this very time.

Obviously the month of November has been lost, and at the moment we are looking at approximately a 15th December start at the earliest. I estimate and believe our season will be shortened to somewhere in the region of 50 – 60 games. But that will all depend on what we all believe will help bring the best team to the fore. The NBA is the greatest league in pro sports and with this deal in place it will continue to be that way for years to come. That’s all for now thanks......"

The NBA later released the document containing the details of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Here are some of the main points.

Player contract length
Contracts will be shortened from six years to five years for players who have "Bird" rights (which allow teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents) and from five years to four years for non-Bird contracts.

Amnesty clause
Each team will be able to waive one player with a previously existing contract without it counting against the salary cap, but it will be available only once per team during the life of the new CBA. While the player will still be paid his full salary, this would allow teams to get rid of a contract that is weighing them down.

Teams will want to use this sooner rather than later since it cannot be used on new contracts that are signed. It can be used during any year of the player's deal, but must be announced at the start of the season.
In addition to this, teams cannot resign a player they waived. Also teams can only sign a maximum of 2 amniested players.

Luxury tax
Teams are penalized $1.50 for every dollar they spend in the first $5 million above the tax level; $1.75 for every dollar spent between $5 million and $10 million above; $2.50 for every dollar spent between $10 million to $15 million above; and $3.25 for every dollar spent $15 million and above.
All teams must have a minimum of 45m in salary committed. Any team with less salary will be penalised. This is an effort to up the competition league-wide.

Mid-level exception
The MLE will work as follows. $5M for non-taxpayers, $3M for taxpayers, $2.5M for teams with cap room. The length of contracts are now 4 years maximum for non –taxpayers and cap room space teams, and 3 year maximum for tax paying teams.

"Stretch" exception
This exception will allow teams to waive a player and stretch his pay (and salary cap hit) over an extended period of time. The agreed-upon formula is as such: double the number of years left on the player's deal, plus one (so Player X who has two seasons remaining on his deal would be paid over five seasons). It's only available to a team once per season.

Basketball-related income split
Players received 57 percent of BRI in the previous deal and have reduced their share to a 50-50 split with the owners.

Sign-and-trades
The sign-and-trade was previously an option for all teams, but tax-paying teams are now prohibited from being able to do so in the new deal. What's more, sign-and-trade contracts will be for no more than four years.

CBA length
The CBA is a 10-year agreement with an option to terminate following Year No. 6 and No.8.

NBA Season will be 58 Games Long.

NBA Season will be 58 Games Long.

The NBA has announced that this season will be 58 games long. And it will begin on December 15th. In what will be seen as a major surprise, the NBA will only lose 24 games off its schedule. It is going to mean some back to back games, and very tough road schedules for all teams. But we are just happy to get NBA basketball back.

In a percentage driven year, the players are only going to lose approximately 18% of their annual salary. Somewhat of a relief and the only real silver lining for the players, who said they were not entirely happy with the deal, but can work with it for now, for the good of the game. The filtered down schedule is expected to be announced tomorrow, with Christmas Day penned in as the first major showcase of the season. The playoffs have been shortened too, each round will now only be a best of five games series. The NBA Finals however will remain best of seven.

NBA Amnesty Releases 2011/12.

NBA Amnesty Releases 2011/12.

The following teams have announced that they are availing of the amnesty clause this season. This list is not final, all remaining teams have until the beginning of the NBA season to announce who they will amnesty. Otherwise they will carry over the amnesty provision to each remaining season of this CBA. providing the contract has been signed before July 1st 2011.

We've highlighted some of the players who could make a difference to contending teams.

Cleveland Cavaliers: Baron Davis

Indiana Pacers: James Posey

New York Knicks: Chauncey Billups

New Jersey Nets: Travis Outlaw

Orlando Magic: Gilbert Arenas

Golden State Warriors: Charlie Bell

Portland Trailblazers: Brandon Roy

In total 7 teams used their amnesty clause, leaving 23 teams with the ability to use the clause once in the remaining years of this CBA.

Surprisingly the Timberwolves did not use it on Darko Milicic, as David Kahn believes he is valuable to their development.

Jose Calderon’s consistent stats means the Raptors chose to keep him around and help develop Jerry Bayless.

The Orlando Magic chose to amnesty Gilbert Arenas in another major move for GM Phil Jackson. Jackson already has Jameer Nelson and Chris Duhon at point guard. It seems Jackson wants to see players who work hard and chose to jettison Arenas quickly. Don't be surprised to see him move Duhon next to add more shooting to the backcourt.
