The Coaching Career of Brandon Gillespie (NCAA 10)

Coaching Career of Brandon Gillespie:

Game: NCAA Basketball 10
Sliders: Blue's Varsity Sliders
Half Length: 16 minute
Offense: Up-Tempo (4 around 1)
Defense: Man-to-Man (with some 2-3 Zone)

Worchester, MA-- The Holy Cross Crusaders, after many years of cellar-dwelling in the Patriot League, have hired a new head coach in Brandon Gillespie. Gillespie is an inexperienced coach, having only coached one basketball team in his life; and that was his little brother's travel team...Holy Cross is desperate and willing to try anything to get out of the bottom of the league, apparently that includes sending a joke of a coach a job offer.

Gillespie in his opening press conference, "I know I don't have a ton of experience coaching, but hell...neither did a lot of people before they got their first jobs. Just because I don't have experience doesn't mean I can't coach guys."

Reporter: Coach, what kind of offense are you going to run here at the Cross?

"I love to push the ball down the court and run the floor, score 80 points a game, so look for this team to be an up-tempo squad with excellent conditioning. I'm looking to RJ (Evans) to be my go-to guy on offense. He can score it with the best of them and I fully expect him to be a double-digit scorer all season long."

This columnist can honestly say he doesn't know what in the world is wrong with the AD here at Holy Cross...why in the world is he gonna go and hire this kid? There is nothing he could say that would tell me that he could be a good coach, and there is no experience that shows that either. Keep an eye on how long Gillespie hangs around, if he doesn't produce soon...he could be out the door before you know it.

Re: The Coaching Career of Brandon Gillespie (NCAA 10)

Holy Cross Crusaders Depth Chart - 2009/10
STARTER2ND3RD4TH
PGAndrew Beinert (JR)Jeff Harris (SO)Dee Goens (FR)Charlie May (SO)
SGRJ Evans (SO)Devin Brown (SO)
SFMike Cavataio (SO)Josh Jones (JR)
PFAndrew Keistter (JR)Adam May (SR)
CEric Meister (SR)Phil Beans (FR)

PLAYER TO WATCH: SG RJ Evans (SO)- Evans is as pure a scorer as this team will find, he can hit the 3 ball and put the ball on the floor and get easy buckets as well. Look for Gillespie to lean heavily on him to get his team going offensively.

Re: The Coaching Career of Brandon Gillespie (NCAA 10)

Holy Cross 79, Harvard 62

Holy Cross (1-0)
RJ Evans: 21 points, 3 rebound, 1 steal

Devin Brown: 15 points, 3 assists
Andrew Beinert: 10 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 3 steals
Harvard (0-1)
Jeremy Lin: 26 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 turnovers
Keith Wright: 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 1 block
Max Kenyi: 9 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists

Holy Cross gets its first win under Coach Gillespie in a game they were expected to lose by double-digits. RJ Evans and Jeremy Lin were in an epic scoring duel all game, with Evans getting the key buckets late to put the game out of reach.

Holy Cross 81, Saint Joseph 65

Holy Cross (2-0)
RJ Evans: 22 points, 1 block, 1 steal
Devin Brown: 16 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds
Andrew Beinert: 13 points, 1 rebound, 5 assists
Saint Joseph (0-2)
Darrin Groves: 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
Bryant Irwin: 12 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist
Carl Jones: 11 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists

Two in a row for the Crusaders of Holy Cross, what a surprising start for them, beating another team they shouldn't have beat behind their excellent guard play in Evans, Brown and Beinert.

Loyola-Chicago 73, Holy Cross 70

Loyola (1-2)
Aric Vanweelden: 19 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists
Shaun Adams: 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists
Andy Polka: 12 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal
Holy Cross (2-1)
RJ Evans: 27 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 block, 1 steal
Andrew Beinert: 12 points, 1 rebound, 5 assists
Andrew Keister: 10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks

The Cross drops its first game under Coach Gillespie in a heartbreaking fashion. They trailed by 3 with 10 seconds on the clock, RJ Evans took the ball down court and called for the ball screen from his center. Evans got a great screen and had an open look to send the game into OT...sadly the shot rimmed out with time expiring (Evan's only miss from 3 point range on the day as he went 5-6)

Rhode Island 83, Holy Cross 78

Rhode Island (2-0)
Marquis Jones: 20 points, 1 rebound, 6 assists
Will Martell: 15 points, 14 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 blocks
LaMonte Ulmer: 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists
Holy Cross (2-2)
RJ Evans: 32 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist
Devin Brown: 18 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists
Mike Cavataio: 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks

Holy Cross drops its second straight game, this time against Rhode Island. RJ Evans had a career game, going for 32 points...but it wasn't enough to offset everybody else's scoring woes on the night. Him and Devin Brown scored 50 of the 78 points the team scored tonight, that isn't good enough.

Re: The Coaching Career of Brandon Gillespie (NCAA 10)

Coaches Corner: Brandon Gillespie, Holy Cross

Reporter (R): So Coach Gillespie, how are you feeling about your season so far?

Well, we won 2 games against tough teams so far...which I like. But we also lost to two teams I think we probably should have beat, if I'm being honest with myself, so its been alright.

R: What has been the toughest part about adjusting to coaching at this level for you so far?

Uhhhh...I coached 13 and 14 year olds not even two months ago man, how much harder do you think it is to coach grown men in comparison to squeaky-voiced, puberty ridden boys? Come on man. Haha, no but in all seriousness, its been getting to know my team in such a short amount of time. I need to know what guys know and what they need to be taught and how I need to treat certain guys, so that's been a challenge for me.

R: You travel to Vegas to take on the UNLV Runnin' Rebels, any plans for the weekend your there?

Of course man! I'm gonna get totally S***faced and go party like its 1999...what the hell kind of question is that? Of course I'm not doing anything that weekend! I have a game to get ready for, and after we play that...I have to start planning for our next game at Western Michigan. Stop trying to make me seem like a fool, I'm not stupid.

R: How's recruiting going for you so far Coach, got any guys your keying in on?

It's going well so far, I've got a couple of guys that really are interested in the program down here, and it just so happens that they fit needs for us right now. Ben Mason, a 3 star center from New York is at the top of my list, to replace our excellent center this year who is a senior. Mason could get a ton of minutes early on and we hope he loves us as much as we love him. Vic Wilcox, a 3 star PF is another one who I am in love with and he also fills a need. Wilcox is an excellent rebounder and can score if fed in the low block, and he also loves us. Theo Veal, a 3 star SF is my next guy I hope comes to town. While we have talent at the 3 spot right now, Veal is a shooter who can knock down some jumpers and also get to the bucket, something our guys need to improve on after Mikey.

R: Thanks Coach, its always a pleasure.
