Vaden grew up a basketball fan. Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Joshua saw alot of Washington Wizards games while growing up. He knew he wanted to play basketball. And that's exactly what he did. Well. No its not. He sucked as a basketball player.
He tried out every year, beginning with his first year in middle school to be the teams point guard. Knowing he sucked, he kept practicing and practicing. It just never came to him. By his sophomore year in high school the varsity head coach felt bad for him. The kid had heart. Just no talent.
So the coach decided to name him assistant to the assistant head coach. And this is where he found out his calling wasn't to play basketball. It was to coach it. He didn't have any coaching input, he just watched and learned. For three years he learned under the head coach of the basketball team.
When he graduated, he still kept his "job" as assistant to the assistant head coach. After two more years, he finally became the assistant head coach after a sex scandal broke out regarding the assistant head coach and a cheerleader. After being the assistant head coach for three years, and helping coach the varsity team to back to back state championships, he got a call from Norfolk State to be one of their assistant coaches.
For two years he learned under coach Anthony Evans. But when news broke of a cheating scandal regarding the men's basketball team, coach Evans and his assistants resigned. However, Vaden didn't. He knew he was innocent, and was proven innocent. With no head coach for the Norfolk State Spartans, he pleaded his case to the athletic director on becoming the next head coach.
In the end, an agreement was reached: Vaden would be named coach, but could be replaced at anytime. With this news he was ecstatic. He had worked hard to get to this point. Now he had to work even harder to keep it. And he was ready for the challenge.
