Re: Our Time is Now | An Oklahoma City Thunder Association (NBA 2K12)

Up to the Task
Durant Scores 48 in 114-109 Thunder Win

Oklahoma City, OK (AP) -- It wasn't easy. In fact, Oklahoma City's young guns spent most of the first half fighting back to stay within striking distance. With a little over 5:00 remaining in the second quarter Dallas had built a 38-27 advantage with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on the Thunder bench. "I waited to long to call a timeout and get them back in there. That is 100% on me," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. The two young Thunder superstars calmly got their team back in the game. First it was a pair of Kevin Durant drving layups, then Westbrook drilled back-to-back pull-up jumpers from the free-throw line, and just like that it was 38-35. James Harden got in on the fun with a driving layup that led to a three point play, tying the game. Dallas finally scored to stop the Thunder run, but not before they had seen their once 38-27 lead turn into a 43-38 deficit in the blink of an eye. "They can come at you so fast and so quick and the ability to close a deficit in a hurry. By the time you know what's hit you, they've rattled off 10 straight points and your left trying to gain your composure and figure out what just happened," said Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle.

The defending champion Mavericks would gain their composure and fight back to trail just 52-50 at halftime. Most of the second half was a back-and-forth affair. The two teams traded buckets and no one enjoyed a lead larger than four until midway through the fourth quarter. That's when the Thunder made their move and put the Mavericks away. Westbrook scored six straight points and Durant added four free-throws to put Oklahoma ahead for good, 110-100. Last year's finals MVP, Dirk Nowitzki, would do his best to get his team back in the game, hitting one of his patented awkward fall-away jumpers and a three, to cut the Thunder lead in half, but it wasn't enough.

Kevin Durant had a masterful game, scoring a playoff career high 48 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Oklahoma City's lethal trio of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden were just too much. In all, the three combined for 95 points on 32/60 shooting. The only other Thunder player to score in double figures was Kendrick Perkins who had 11 points to go along with 9 rebounds. Dallas had five players score double figures, led by Dirk's 24, but their balanced effort couldn't keep up with the younger fresher legs of Oklahoma City.

Over the Hill
Young Thunder Run Away from Older Mavs, 117-103
Oklahoma City, OK (AP) -- It felt like just a matter of when, not if. For the first two quarters the Thunder controlled the tempo and got just about any shot they wanted. So, it felt odd that they were trailing midway through the third quarter when it seemed like they had a 10 point lead. "For a while there, we just weren't making shots. It's really that simple. We were getting great looks, and missing some easy ones. I know the numbers don't indicate that at the end of the day, but for the first two quarters and we missed quite a few chippies. Once James hit those two threes and we started finishing some plays at the rim, the floodgates just opened up," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. And indeed they did. Up just 56-53 with time running down in the second quarter, Kevin Durant gave Shawn Marion a shoulder fake, drove past him, and laid the ball in as time expired, to put the Thunder ahead 58-53 at halftime. They never looked back.

Sure, after falling behind 78-66 Dallas went on a quick 8-0 run to make it a 78-74 ballgame, but back-to-back James Harden threes, and a posterizing slam dunk by Kevin Durant put Oklahoma City up 86-74. The Thunder would add two more buckets before the end of the quarter and had scored an impressive 90 points with one quarter remaining. "We saw it in game one so we shouldn't have been caught off guard. We knew how quick and easy they could score. They can come at you in a variety of ways and score from anywhere on the floor. It's so hard to account for all their weapons," said stunned Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki in the postgame press conference.

Dallas did score the first four points of the fourth quarter to pull within 10 but back-to-back Daequan Cook three-pointers put the Mavericks in a 16 point hole. The Mavericks would make it semi-interesting by pulling within nine (after trailing 100-82) with a little over five minutes to go, but it was too little too late. The Thunder closed the game on a 17-2 run and left no doubt they were the better team. After defeating Oklahoma City 4-1 in last year's Western Conference Finals, a much different looking Mavericks team was going back home in 2-0 hole.

Show No Mercy
Thunder Rout Mavs

Dallas, TX (AP) -- When you look up at the scoreboard more than halfway through the second quarter and see you're down 50-25, you know something has gone terribly wrong. That was the case last night in game there of the Western Conference Finals, as the Oklahoma City Thunder jumped out to a 13-2 lead on the Dallas Mavericks, and never looked back. "I felt early on we just settled for too many jumpers, didn't make them, and they got into the paint and were scoring at will. It was a firestorm from the word go, and we never recovered," said Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle.

Oklahoma City shot an astounding 60% (27/45) in the first half, and 42 of their 64 points came in the paint. "We attacked early and often. I was real proud of how we came out and fought from the word go. We knew how important a 3-0 series lead would be, and we didn't back down. Kevin carried us early, scoring 13 of our first 20, and Russ got it going in the second with some really nice dunks," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. And indeed he did. Westbrook, on three straight possessions, split the Dallas defense right down the middle, and finished the play off with a rim-rattling dunk.

The Thunder scored 96 points in the first three quarters and, after Jason Terry's halfcourt buzzer beater at the end of the third, Dallas still trailed 96-63. Kevin Durant continued his brilliant playoff play, finishing with 45 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Russell Westbrook scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out 13 helpers. The best 6th man in the NBA, James Harden, finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Daequan Cook gave the Thunder a spark of the bench, scoring nine points and making two of his three three-point attempts. The Thunder will attempt to closeout the series on Wednesday night.

Re: Our Time is Now | An Oklahoma City Thunder Association (NBA 2K12)

Torch Passed
Durant Scores 43 as Thunder Complete Sweep

Dallas, TX (AP) -- Ever since the Oklahoma City Thunder came withing one Pau Gasol put-back away from taking the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the 2010 NBA playoffs, it seemed like they were the eventual "team to beat" in the Western Conference. That was two years ago. The Thunder's two bet players (Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook) were just 21 years old, and James Harden was 20, and had yet to emerge as the best and most lethal scoring bench player in the league. And last night, it was the same core of Thunder players knocking out the defending champion Dallas Mavericks out of the Western Conference Finals, and punching their ticket to their first NBA Finals.

Dallas did not make it easy. Sure, this was a completely different team than the one who put together one of the more memorable championship runs in recent memory. They didn't have Tyson Chandler wreaking havoc in the paint on defense; and they didn't have the lockdown perimeter duo of Shawn Marion and Deshawn Stevenson to take opposing guards and wings out of their game; and they didn't have J.J. Barea carving up defense with his dribble penetration and timely shooting. But still, they had Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, and Jason Terry. Throw in Lamar Odom, who was a key piece in two championships with the Lakers, and they still had a solid core not willing to lose their championship belt without a fight. After one quarter the Mavericks held a slim 26-25 lead. At halftime the Thunder were ahead 55-53, and after the third quarter the game was tied, 87-87. Trailing by as many as 10 in the fourth, the Thunder rallied back to take a 116-112 lead with under one minute to play. Jason Terry hit a 15 foot jumper to tie the game and, after Durant failed to connect on a driving layup, the Mavericks were in a position to tie the game and force overtime. Unfortunately their attempt to do so came up short, after they missed a series of runners and jumpers in the lane in the final seconds. "We have to make one of those shots. We got three or four looks right in front of the rim, and couldn't connect. Tip your hat to the Thunder. They're a very talented team whose hungry to prove that this their time," said Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle.

Oklahoma City's big three of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden combined for 93 points on 31/60 shooting, and carried their team into the Finals where they'll face the Miami Heat or Chicago Bulls. Durant had a good all-around game, scoring 43 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out 4 assists. Westbrook scored 28 points on 9/13 shooting, and Harden provided 22 points off the bench.

Despite excellent shooting by the Mavericks, who made nine of their 18 three-point attempts, the Thunder would not go away. "I thought there was several chances for us to lay down and not fight, and be content with going back home to win the series. But this team doesn't know anything other than fight until the end. They are not going to give in and that's what makes coaching them so enjoyable," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. It was the play of his superstar, and league MVP Kevin Durant, over the course of the entire series that may have signified there's a new sheriff in town to claim the "best player in the league" crown. Durant averaged an astonishing 44.5 points per game to go along with 11 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game to lead the way. Westbrook averaged 23.5 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 7.3 assists, to go along with one block and one steal per contest.

Re: Our Time is Now | An Oklahoma City Thunder Association (NBA 2K12)

Thunder Struck
Oklahoma City Rolls to Game One Win, 112-81
Miami, FL (AP) -- In one of the more anticipated NBA Finals match-ups of the last decade, game one of the 2012 Finals ushered in a new era for the league. Three established superstars - LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh - had joined forces just two summers ago to form a new super villain for everyone to hate; and, Oklahoma City, with their three budding young stars, was beginning to show flashes of being a likeable foe who could foil Miami's bid at "not one, not two, not three..." championships.

Things looked grim for Thunder fans early one as Miami's Mario Chalmers connected on his first three shots (two of them three pointers) and gave the Heat an early 8-0 lead. Things would continue to get worse as Miami started 8/9 from the floor in the first quarter, racing out to an 18-7 lead, while the young Thunder struggled to find their, well...everything. As the Heat made tough shot after tough shot, and jumper after jumper, Oklahoma City's young guns weren't connecting on anything, throwing passes out of bounds, and showing looks of disgust on their face. "It wasn't a pretty sight. I knew things were getting away from us and, with it being the team's first NBA Finals game - on the road no less - I knew I had to get the to settle down," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks, who called a timeout with a little over 5:00 remaining in the first quarter, and his team down 20-11. And it was as if a totally new team emerged from that timeout. James Harden, off the bench, started things with a dunk in traffic. Russell Westbrook followed with six straight points, and back-to-back Nick Collison layups had drawn the Thunder within two, 22-20. Kevin Durant added a dunk late in the first quarter to tie the game 28-28 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was all Thunder. Kevin Durant scored 14 of his 23 first half points in the second, leading the Thunder who outscored Heat 32-19 in the quarter, to take a 60-47 lead into the halftime locker room. It wasn't just Durant's offense, though, who held LeBron James to 11 first half points on 4/11 shooting. Defensive extraordinaire Thabo Sefolosha did an excellent job on the other head of Miami's two-headed monster, holding Dwyane Wade to just two points on 1/7 shooting. "They really got after us defensively in the second. They were active and made us work for every shot. Thabo really did a phenomenal job on Dwyane and Durant's length bothered LeBron," said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Things didn't get much better for the Heat in the third quarter as they missed their first five shots, while the Thunder rattled off eight straight points to take a commanding 68-47 lead. If it wasn't for a Dwyane Wade three at the end of the third quarter, the Thunder would have closed on a 16-0 run. Nevertheless, Oklahoma City dominated Miami in the third, outscoring them 37-16, and took an overwhelming 97-63 lead into the fourth quarter. Kevin Durant continued his dazzling performance, scoring 18 points in the third, giving him 41 points for the game, to go along with seven rebounds, and seven assists. After playing to a 28-28 standstill after one quarter, the Thunder had outscored the Heat 69-35 in the second and third quarters. Miami shot just 6/21 from the floor in the third and had four turnovers leading to nine Thunder points.

The fourth quarter was just a formality, as the final outcome of the game had long been decided. Oklahoma City cleared their bench and, despite Miami keeping many starters and key reserves in the game throughout, were only outscored 18-15, to win the game 112-81. "That was a surgical dismantling tonight. I knew this team was good, and had special talent, but what I saw them do tonight was on a completely different level. If they play like this again in game two, I don't know what we can do. They were efficient and deadly on offense, and aggressive and active on defense. They had us confused and lost most of the game," said Spoeslstra. After catching a lot of criticism after his underwhelming Finals performance last year against Dallas, LeBron James didn't do much to quiet his naysayers, scoring just 15 points on 5/20 shooting. His sidekick, Dwyane Wade, was unfathomably worse, scoring just 13 points on 5/23 shooting. The third wheel of Miami's "Big Three", Chris Bosh, finished with just 12 points on 5/11 shooting.

Game two will be back here on Tuesday night as Miami will look to right the ship, and get the series squared away before heading to Oklahoma City.
