Jack Vance's Coaching Life - CH2K8

March 31, 2007
Radford, VA

Radford Hires Jack Vance

The Radford Highlanders announced today the hiring of a relative unknown to lead their men's basketball team, 27-year-old Jack Vance who comes to the school from Troy University where he worked as an assistant to long-time Trojans head coach Don Maestri for the past 3 seasons.

"I want to say that it is an honor to be the new head coach here at Radford University," Vance said in his introductory press conference. "Obviously not a lot of people are sure who I am, but you will soon know. There is great potential here at Radford and we will make exciting things happen."

Vance continued, "The most important thing is that we get quality players that can help us compete in the Big South Conference and on a national level. Without talent you cannot win, so I have recruiting as my top priority. Our teams will also emphasize strong defense and make the opponent work for every bucket. Of course we will not neglect the offensive side of the ball, but lockdown defense is what I'm looking for and demand."

Vance comes to Radford having never played college basketball after being born in Tallahassee, Florida, and attending high school in Dothan, Alabama, before attending and graduating from Troy University in Troy, Alabama.

Radford University is located in Radford, Virginia, with a student enrollment of 9,370 students. The basketball team plays at the 3,000 seat Dedmon Center. Radford has won three Big South regular season championships in 1992, 2000, and 2001 but their only NCAA Tournament appearance was in 1998 where as a 16 seed they were defeated by 1 seed Duke in the opening round 99-63. Vance replaces Byron Samuels who was head coach from 2002-2007. Radford was 8-22 last season.
