The Celtics' Jeff Green celebrating after hitting late three pointer against Lakers.
THE FACT: The Lakers have been swept 0-2 in their season series with the Celtics as they drop tonight's game at TD Garden in Boston, MA. Kobe Bryant lead all scorers with 24 points in a losing effort. Bryant also tallied up 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. An MVP-caliber performance from Bryant was not enough as the Celtics edged the Lakers 96-89. Off the bench for the Lakers, MarShon Brooks scored 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting in just 21 minutes. For the winning squad, Jeff Green scored a team-high 18 points. Rookie center Joel Embiid put up yet another double-double in his dominant rookie campaign with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Star point guard Rajon Rondo put up a respectable stat line of 9 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and a whopping 6 steals.
THE STAT: Free throws were hard to come by in such a physical game and for the Lakers, makes were even more rare. The Lakers shot an abysmal 6-for-14 at the free throw line which in no doubt lead to their eventual loss.
QUOTABLE: "It's the Lakers. It's always gonna be a scrappy, important game. It never really matters the context of the rest of the season when the Lakers and Celtics play each other, its a season within itself, and we're the champions this year."
-- Celtics coach Brad Stevens
TURNING POINT: The Lakers only scored 33 points in the second and third quarters combined. The Lakers matched this point total in the fourth quarter alone in a vicious comeback effort that fell just short.
HOT: Reigning Sixth Man of the Year winner Jamal Crawford shot the lights out to the tune of 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting in 23 minutes.
NOT: Trevor Ariza struggled from the field on the night, going 2-for-9 with just 6 points. More importantly, Ariza was thoroughly aggressive in the fourth, earning three separate trips to the line but was unable to capitalize going 1-for-5 on free throw attempts.
GOOD MOVE: Joel Embiid became the Celtics #2 option on the night and for good reason. With such limited size inside for the Lakers with Pau Gasol out, the Celtics fed Embiid early and often and the rookie was quite successful. The interior scoring was too much for the undersized Lakers to handle.
BAD MOVE: To begin the fourth quarter, both teams had only attempted a combined 19 free throws so the foul line was either team's for the taking. The Lakers attempted to take advantage but everyone except for Trevor Ariza appeared quite content shooting long jump shots.
SPRITEŽ KEY GAME MATCHUP: Marcus Smart 10 PTS, 4 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK vs. Rajon Rondo 9 PTS, 5 REB, 9 AST, 6 STL (Advantage: Rondo)
UP NEXT: For the Lakers, Sunday @ Chicago, Monday @ Oklahoma City, Wednesday vs. Charlotte. For the Celtics, Saturday vs. Indiana, Sunday vs. Dallas, Tuesday @ Indiana.
