Miami Heat 2014-2015 Season Preview
Roster Breakdown:
Point Guards | The Heat finished the 2013-2014 season with rotating point guards
Mario Chalmers and
Norris Cole. However, they drafted a player that LeBron James had endorsed,
Shabazz Napier, in hopes that "The King" would return to Miami. He didn't and that means that the Heat are stuck with Napier. But that isn't such a bad thing. Napier was a strong player in college. While Cole has shown promise, he lacks consistency in his game. On the flipside, Mario Chalmers has been with the Heat for 6 seasons, now entering his 7th. He's a decent defender and one of the better 3 point shooters on the team. Look out for Napier possibly stealing the starting spot out from under the other two.
Shooting Guards |
Dwyane Wade took a bit of a pay cut once again to remain with the team that drafted him. And once again, he may have to play second fiddle to the returning Chris Bosh. If he can remain healthy though, he's still easily a top 5 shooting guard in the game. That if is a big one though, after the past few seasons he's really struggled to stay on the court. Behind Wade on the depth chart is rookie
Tyler Johnson. There isn't too much to say about his game, as most teams including the Heat have yet to see what the young gun can offer. With Johnson as a backup plan, the Heat could find some decent shooting off the bench.
Small Forwards | Newcomers will play a huge role at the small forward position. Recently acquired
Luol Deng is likely going to come out as the starter, after signing a 1 year deal worth nearly 10 million. Deng is respected around the league as a great defender. Rookie
James Ennis will be joining the team this year after playing last year overseas in Australia, winning the NBL championship and earning MVP honors on his team. His athleticism is incredible and he's starting to create a lot of buzz in Florida around him potentially being the Heat's next star. Also new to the Heat is
Danny Granger, the former All Star and Most Improved Player for the Pacers. Nobody is entirely sure about what he brings to the table after disappearing off the radar the past few seasons. The Heat can only dream he returns to his All Star form.
Power Forwards | Another new guy,
Josh McRoberts, is looking to grab a starting spot on the team. McRoberts is a great addition, giving the Heat someone who will fight for every rebound and every loose ball. Unfortunately, to most Heat fans he's known as "the guy who elbowed James".
Shawne Williams, who joins his former Pacers teammate Danny Granger, looks to bring some extra shooting from the outside. And of course, fan favorite and Heat-lifer "U.D."
Udonis Haslem is back for another season.
Centers | The Last Living Dinosaur. The Velociraptor. Boshasaurus Rex. Whatever you want to call him,
Chris Bosh is back in Miami on a 5 year max deal. Bosh is taking the reigns of the team after LeBron James' departure, and everyone in Miami is waiting for him to return to his old Toronto form. Also re-signed by the Heat is the Birdman,
Chris Andersen. He'll be providing some much needed defense and rebounding off the bench. Miami will also be bringing in two smaller caliber players,
Hassan Whiteside and
Justin Hamilton. The potential is there for both of them, it's just that neither has shown anything special over their careers. Lucky for them, they're still young.
Season Outlook:
Despite how excited everyone seems to be, there seems to be an underlying theme of fear. Will the young rookies Ennis and Napier pan out? Will the new free agent acquisitions fit into Miami's system? Will Dwyane Wade stay healthy? Will Chris Bosh play MVP caliber basketball? The harsh reality is... nobody knows. Those questions can only be answered as time passes. Looking at them on paper, it's easy to say that the Heat could make a playoff push. And if they can get it all together, they might just be able to. The East has always been viewed as the weaker of the two conferences, so even if the Heat perform poorly maybe they sneak in as a number 7th or 8th seed. After those fews years of clarity with LeBron at the helm, knowing for sure that the Heat would be good, this season will be a different experience for old and new fans alike. One thing's absolutely positive - the Heat won't go down without a fight.
Projected Finishes:
45-37 (if everything goes right) |
30-52 (if everything goes wrong)
Bold Predictions:
*Chris Bosh IS the MVP of the team and finishes top 3 in MVP voting.*
*Danny Granger flashes his former self at least twice this season*
*James Ennis takes over a starting spot by the end of the season*
*The Heat not only make it to the playoffs, but sweep their first opponents*
