A New Hope: A Seattle Sonics Story.

Welcome to my dynasty story based on the Sacramento Kings franchise starting at the end of the 2009-10 season.

As you can see the Kings will not remain the Kings in this story though. The Kings owners at the time had been open to selling the franchise for the next few years. A well known story is that the Kings almost moved to Anaheim in 2011, and then were even closer to moving to Seattle in 2014. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson managed to save the franchise and brought in Vivek Ranadive as owner. The Kings still have not made the playoffs and look stuck as bottom dwellers for many more years.

But what if the Maloof brothers decided to cut their losses a little bit earlier, before Vivek Ranadive and Kevin Johnson were on the scene?

I will pick up the story in the summer of 2009. The Kings were one of the most popular teams to write a dynasty story back then. The Kings were on the rise taking big leaps from a rebuild.

With the incredible rookie season of Tyreke Evans behind them and the potential improvement from the Kings with another high draft pick it gave their fans A New Hope

Sacramento Kings set to move to Seattle after Maloof family agree sale.

Sacramento Kings set to move to Seattle after Maloof family agree sale.

February 25th, 2009.

The Sacramento Kings look set to be sold and moved to Seattle, pending approval by the owners of the NBA.

The current owners, the Maloof family, have agreed to sell the Kings to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, the league confirmed in a statement on Monday. The deal is now waiting for a green light from the NBA Board of Governors to be completed, although Sacramento city officials are still vowing to fight the move.

Hansen's group will buy 65% of the franchise for $525 million, move the team to Seattle and restore the SuperSonics name, which was lost when the city's franchise moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. The Maloofs will have no stake in the team, according to AP sources.

The sale figure is a total valuation of the franchise, which includes relocation fees. Hansen's group also is hoping to buy out other minority investors.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said last week he had received permission from NBA Commissioner David Stern to present a counteroffer to league owners from buyers who would keep the Kings in Sacramento.

The plan by Hansen's group is to have the team play at least the next two seasons in KeyArena before moving into a new facility in downtown Seattle. The deadline for teams to apply for a move for the next season is March 1.

Mayor Johnson, himself a former All-Star point guard in the NBA, said in a statement late Sunday night that the city remained undeterred despite the agreement with the Seattle group.

"Sacramento has proven that it is a strong NBA market with a fan base that year in and year out has demonstrated a commitment to the Kings by selling out 19 of 27 seasons in a top 20 market and owning two of the longest sellout streaks in NBA history," Johnson said.

"When it comes to keeping the team in our community, Sacramento is playing to win. In particular, we have been focused like a laser on identifying an ownership group that will both have the financial resources desired by the NBA and the vision to make the Kings the NBA equivalent of what the Green Bay Packers have been in the NFL."

"The NBA received an executed Purchase and Sale Agreement for the transfer of a controlling interest in the Sacramento Kings from the Maloof family to an investor group led by Christopher Hansen," the league said. "The proposed transaction is subject to the approval of the NBA Board of Governors and has been referred to the Board's committee process for review."

Hansen, a Seattle native and San Francisco-based investor, reached agreement with local governments in Seattle last October on plans to build a $490 million arena near the city's other stadiums, CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field.

As part of the agreement, no construction will begin until all environmental reviews are completed and a team has been secured.

Hansen's group is expected to pitch in $290 million in private investment toward the arena, along with helping to pay for transportation improvements in the area around the stadiums. The plans also call for the arena to be able to handle a future NHL franchise.

The remaining $200 million in public financing would be paid back with rent money and admissions taxes from the arena, and if that money falls short, Hansen would be responsible for making up the rest.

Other investors in the proposed arena include Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and two members of the Nordstrom department store family.

Hansen's goal has been to return the SuperSonics to the Puget Sound after they were moved from Seattle to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Asked in September if he could envision a team being in Seattle for the 2011 season, Hansen was cautious about finding an option that quickly.

Brothers Joe, Gavin and George Maloof bought controlling interests in the franchise from Los Angeles-based developer Jim Thomas in 1999. The Maloofs, who have long waited for an upgrade to the team's outdated arena, backed out of a tentative $391 million deal for a new downtown building with Sacramento last year, reigniting fears the franchise could relocate.

Johnson and the Kings broke off all negotiations in the summer with the team's owners, who said the deal didn't make financial sense for the franchise.

In early 2008, the Kings appeared determined to move to Anaheim before Johnson convinced the NBA to give the city one last chance to help finance an arena.

At one point, Johnson seemed so certain the team was gone he called the process a "slow death" and compared the city's efforts to keep the Kings a "Hail Mary."

NBA relocation commitee will approve Kings' move to Seattle.

NBA relocation committee's approval of Kings' move to Seattle is reportedly a 'formality'.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports that it is a "formality" that the NBA's relocation committee will approve the Sacramento Kings' move to Seattle.

The news broke on Sunday night that the Maloof family had struck a deal with Chris Hansen to move the team to Seattle. Hansen's group would pay about $340 million in the deal, or 65 percent of the $525 million total franchise valuation.

No deal is officially complete until it is approved by the NBA's Board of Governors. So while the sale can be approved by the Relocation Committee, it can still be blocked down the road by the Board of Governors.

Sacramento will still be able to make a last-ditch case to the Board of Governors to save the Kings. Mayor Kevin Johnson has been working hard to put together a pool of investors that could present a viable offer to keep the team in Sacramento. A Sacramento-based ownership group would likely have to come up with about $425-450 million to have a chance.

Kings' granted permission to relocate to Seattle.

Kings' granted permission to relocate to Seattle.

April 1st, 2010.

On the eve of a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Sacramento Kings franchise has announced that they have been approved to relocate by the NBA owners' relocation committee. They have also set a date to announce its name and team colours.

Seattle has a rich basketball tradition with the Sonics having played there from 1967-2008. In 2008 the controversial sale of the Sonics to Clay Bennett led to the franchise’s relocation to Oklahoma City. Bennett is currently the chairman of the NBA’ s relocation committee and its believed he helped push the deal through.

Chris Hansen cares deeply about his community and ever since the Sonics left there has been letters, emails, blogs, public demonstration and an award winning documentary that have kept the loss of the Sonics in the spotlight and Chris Hansesn has finally set things in motion to get a team back in Seattle, where professional basketball belongs.

The franchise said today that it would unveil the name and color’s simultaneously on its Web site and at a downtown event on June 25th, a few days after the NBA finals.

Hansen has recently signed a year long lease deal to rent the KeyArena, which is currently undergoing a major revamp.

The lack of city funding cost Seattle one franchise, and Hansen is anxious not to let it happen a second time. Hansesn has one other very prominent Seattle business man in his ownership team, Steve Ballmer. Ballmer could be the silent majority owner but Hansen has been the face of the bid to the public so far. Hansen and Ballmer have just signed off on the construction of a downtown Seattle arena, which will be completed in two seasons time, the 2012-13 season.

If the Kings complete their relocation from Sacramento to Seattle, it would be the fourth time this decade that an NBA team has pulled up stakes. For the Kings it will be a record third relocation in their franchise history. Not an envious record to hold.

Other franchises to relocate in the last three decades:

2008 Sonics Seattle - Oklahoma City
2002 Hornets Charlotte - New Orleans
2001 Grizzlies Vancouver - Memphis
1985 Kings Kansas City - Sacramento
1984 Clippers San Diego - Los Angeles
1979 Jazz New Orleans - Salt Lake City
1978 Clippers Buffalo - San Diego

Supersonics draft DeMarcus Cousins.

Supersonics draft DeMarcus Cousins.

SEATTLE, WA, June 24, 2010 -- The Seattle Supersonics tonight (Thursday, June 24th) selected Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins (5th overall) and Marshall’s Hassan Whiteside (33rd overall). Cousins, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Year, was named to the Associated Press First Team All-America and the John R. Wooden Award All-American Team.

An early entry candidate, the 6-11, 270-pound Cousins averaged 15.1 points (.558 FG%, .604 FT%), 9.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and 23.5 minutes per game in 38 appearances while leading the Wildcats in rebounds and blocks. He was second on the team in scoring. Cousins recorded a freshman conference and school record 20 double-doubles and scored in double-figures in 31 contests. He tallied 20 or more points in four games, including a career-high 27 vs. Sam Houston State (11/19/09) and at South Carolina (1/26/10). In 21 games, Cousins recorded two or more blocks.

Cousins becomes only the second player to be selected out of Kentucky by the Kings, joining Bob Guyette who was drafted in the third round of the 1975 NBA Draft.

As a senior for LeFlore High School in Mobile, Ala., Cousins averaged 24.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 3.2 blocks, and 5.1 steals per game. Named a Parade All-American, Cousins was also a member of the 2009 USA Junior National Selected Team.

This is the fifth time in the last seven years and the third time in the last four years that two players from the same school were selected in the top five of the NBA Draft. In 2008, Seattle drafted UCLA’s Russell Westbrook with the fourth overall pick and Memphis followed by selecting Kevin Love. In the previous year, Ohio State’s Greg Oden was the first overall pick by Portland and teammate Mike Conley was the fourth selection by Memphis. In 2005, North Carolina teammates Marvin Williams (Atlanta, 2nd) and Raymond Felton (Charlotte, 5th) were drafted. In 2004, Connecticut teammates Emeka Okafor (Charlotte, 2nd) and Ben Gordon (Chicago, 3rd) were selected.

Whiteside, also an early entry candidate, was the 2010 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and a Division I leading 5.35 blocks per game in 34 contests for Marshall. The 7-0, 235-pound center set school records for most blocks in a season and career with 182, the fourth highest season total in Division I history and the second most by a freshman. He led the nation in triple-doubles with three.

Whiteside also garnered the following honors: AP Honorable Mention All-American, Sporting News Second Team freshman All-American, Second Team All Conference USA, Conference USA All-Freshman Team and All-Defensive Team, Second Team NABC All-District 11.

He tallied 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 blocks vs. Brescia (12/16/09) to become the first freshman in conference history to record a triple-double. His next triple-double was a 14-point, 14-rebound, 10-blocked shot effort at Central Florida (1/13/10). Whiteside recorded 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 blocks vs. UCF (2/27/10).

Whiteside blocked three or more shots in 32 of the 34 games he played in and 20 times swatted away five or more opponent attempts.

He played prep basketball at the Patterson School in Lenior, N.C., in 2008-09, leading the school to a 34-2 record and a No. 1 national ranking. His father, Hassan Arbubakrr, played for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Whiteside becomes just the second player from Marshall drafted by the Supersonics.

“This is really an exciting day for us overall, taking DeMarcus Cousins with the fifth pick and Hassan Whiteside with the 33rd pick,” Petrie said. “Sometimes it’s the long and short of it. Today was the long and long of it. I think in DeMarcus we got an exceptional talent at the center position. He’s going to get us great size and skill in the post. He’s an outstanding passer, and we’re just really excited to add him to the frontcourt we have now with Samuel (Dalembert), Carl (Landry) and Jason (Thompson). I think we’ve gotten significantly bigger and longer, more talented and more skilled. With Hassan, we had him in here twice for workouts. He’s a great athlete, but still needs to learn how to play some and mature a little bit, but he shoots the ball very well. He has an incredible knack for blocking shots off the ball and he’s somebody that we’re really looking forward to working with. So, all in all I think we really added some skill and length and depth to our frontcourt, which is something we’ve been trying to rebuild for the last several years.”

“I think I'm going to fit in pretty good. I think I'm the perfect piece to the puzzle,” Cousins said. “I'll be a physical presence down low, bring a toughness to the team, and hopefully we'll win games."
