Re: This Starts Now: Philadelphia 76ers MyLeague

A Bright Future Resides in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, PA -- Deep in the boughs of the Wells Fargo Center the clanking of metal plates followed by a "yeah boy" between the grunts of each rep echos out into the corridor. The Philadelphia 76ers two prized possessions and franchise cornerstones are getting in an off-day workout, their bond already strong, as if they've known each other for years, not months. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, just halfway through their rookie seasons, have already changed the culture in the 76ers locker room. A culture that seemed so far gone that it'd take several miracles and a decade or two to change. Former general manager Sam Hinkie's somewhat cheesy "Trust the Process" slogan was starting to seem less and less cheesy with every passing game.

For some teams a 21-20 record at the halfway point would bring little to no excitement to the franchise and their fans. For other teams a 21-20 start to their season would have them in fullblown panic mode. There's really only a small handful of teams that would be ecstatic about a 21-20 record, none more so than the 76ers. Because for a franchise that won just 47 the previous three seasons combined, less than 20% of their games, 21 wins halfway through this season feels like 41-0. Their two star rookies have already changed the outlook of the franchise in ways unimaginable just a few short months ago.

Joel Embiid, who was taken with the number three overall pick int he 2014 draft, missed the entirety of his first two seasons. In what should be the halfway point of his third NBA season is instead the halfway point of his rookie season. But finally, and once-and-for-all, things look promising; the hype and the potential are being lived up to and then some. He was next in line as a "can't miss" big man prospect. However, instead of going the way of Anthony Davis and Karl-Anthony Towns, he seemed to be headed down the Greg Oden road of disappointment. Embiid has made his mark as a two-way unstoppable force. He's top 10 in the league in scoring 23.1 points per game, top five in the league in rebounding at 13.5 per game, and leads the league in blocks at 2.9 per game.

He's had true superstar stat lines already this year. There was a set of back-to-back games on December 30th and January 2nd where he put up identical 34 point, 15 rebound stats to go along with seven combined assists and seven combined blocks. He had his first 20-20 game against the Nets on January 8th and added four blocks for good measure. And just recently, on January 16th, he posted a 38 point, 15 rebound, 3 block performance against the Milwaukee Bucks. He's been the best two-way anchor in the league and he's only 22 years old.

Ben Simmons has more than lived up to his "The Next LeBron Hype" and then some. His rookie numbers are actually better than LeBron's. In fact, they're downright historical. At just 20 years old Simmons is making a mockery of the league, averaging 19.7 PPG, 10.6 APG, and 7.7 RPG. His three-point shooting and mid-range game have been predictably suspect, but he's used his immense athleticism and unfair size advantage at the point guard position to create plenty of easy scoring opportunities in the paint. On January 3rd against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Simmons became the youngest player in league history to post a 40-point triple-double with 41 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. For the season, he already has six triple-doubles and five other games where he missed out on a triple-double by one point and/or one rebound. He had a virtuoso 20-assist game against the Nuggets on December 30th in a 133-121 win and three other 15+ assist games.

Quote:
"Those two, Ben and Joel, have made my job much easier seemingly overnight," said 76er head coach Brett Brown. "They're leading the locker room...as rookies. That's just incredible. They're leading by example, staying after practice to get up extra shots and putting in extra work in the weight room on off-days. At least one of them is the first at the gym for practices and, usually, the last to leave. We're not having to wait for them to be special players, they already are special players."
Embiid and Simmons are getting help from two other young players. One is Otto Porter, who was acquired just before the season. The 23 year old Porter is averaging 13.1 PPG and 5.4 RPG while shooting 41% from three on four attempts per game. The other is sixth man Jahlil Okafor who has bought into his role coming off the bench and is providing the 76ers with 11.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 1.1 BPG in just 25.2 minutes per night. As expected with such a young roster, the season has been riddled with inconsistencies but, at the same time, it's been a season filled with extreme promise and hope. Something 76ers fans haven't seen in years.

Re: This Starts Now: Philadelphia 76ers MyLeague

Embiid, Sixers Stuff Bulls

Simmons to Embiid was a common theme throughout the game, as Philly's two young stars led their team to dominating 123-100 win over the Bulls.

Chicago, IL -- The Philadelphia 76ers came into this game on a bit of a skid. Although they won their last game against the Rockets, they were just 3-6 in their last nine games. The Chicago Bulls came into the game winners of seven of their last nine. And halfway through the third quarter, it was a tight 72-68 contest. That's when the 76ers balanced attack and a bit of dominance from their two superstars turned a four point game into a blowout with a 16-0 run.

While Joel Embiid's individual brilliance led the charge, six Sixers scored in double figures in taking down the Bulls. Embiid set up a personal block party with eight blocks and extended his streak of at least five blocks to four games. Embiid's overall talent was on display as he finished with 32 points, 12 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 7 assists in the Sixers 123-100 win over the Bulls.
