Hornets Lose Big in Milwuakee; Get Glimpse into Future

October 24, 2018

Milwaukee, WI -- While a season opening 19-point loss may seem like a frustrating way to begin your season, first year Charlotte Hornets head coach Logan Schmidt is choosing to see the glass as half-full.

"That team we lost to won 56 games last year and has one of the best players in the league. Sure, I'd prefer it if we had been more competitive, but I'm excited about what I saw tonight in regards to our future."

The Hornets, who won a league-worst 21 games last year, lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 125-106. Oscar Robertson stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals on 8/11 shooting in just 27 minutes. Carmelo Anthony schooled the young Jayson Tatum on the art of scoring with 28 points on 11/17 shooting. And second year stud Donovan Mitchell dropped 24 points and 6 assists.

However, after being outscored 65-26 in the second and third quarters, Schmidt decided to put his young starting lineup back in to start the fourth quarter in attempt to make a run...and that they did. "I saw it as a learning experience. It was a gamble, but I wanted them to go out in the 4th, even against the Bucks bench unit, and build some confidence."

The move worked. The Hornets young-guns started the 4th quarter on an 18-2 run and cut their 39 point deficit to 23. At the midway point of the 4th quarter, and in the midst of a 26-6 run, Milwaukee head coach Jason Kidd called a timeout and re-inserted his starters after his 39 had been cut to 19.

"I would've loved to trust our bench the rest of the game, but there was still a little over six minutes left in the game and they had already cut our lead in half. I didn't want to risk anything," Kidd commented.

With the Bucks starters back in the game, they played the Hornets starters even the remainder of the period. It was a tough, yet positive learning experience for a Hornets team whose starters' average age is just 20.8 years old.

The Hornet saw into what could be a very hopeful future; perhaps the early stages of a homegrown "Big 3" or "Big 4" beginning. Rookie Luca Doncic led the scoring for the Hornets with 22 points and had 6 assists; Joel Embiid double-doubled with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and threw in 4 assists for good measure; and Jayson Tatum scored 20 points while hitting four of his five three point attempts.

Oscar Robertson needed only 27 minutes to post 21 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Luca Doncic shined in his NBA debut, leading the Hornets in scoring with 22 points.

Carmelo Anthony gave Jayson Tatum a tutorial on multi-faceted scoring by dropping 28 points on 11/17 shooting.

Joel Embiid noted a 21-point, 14-rebound double-double in the loss.

Shaq Paces Thunder in 109-91 Season Opening Rout

October 24, 2018

Oklahoma City, OK -- The Oklahoma City Thunder donned a fresh, brand new look on Wednesday night in their 2018-2019 season-opener against the Utah Jazz. Coming off a successful season in which they won 58 games and reached the Western Conference Finals, the Thunder are hoping this season brings them even more success. However, the talk of the night was the complete overhaul the Thunder made of their branding. Long regarded as having one of, if not the, worst color scheme and logo combo in the NBA, the front office finally decided last season it was time to make a change for the 2018-2019 season.

The "new" Thunder cruised their way to a 109-91 win behind the strength of Shaquille O'Neal who posted 26 points, 23 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Shaq wasn't the only one to show up to the party for the Thunder. Paul George chipped in with 21 points, Dario Saric added 19, and second year point guard Dennis Smith Jr. posted a 15-point, 10-assist double-double.

"Having a force as dominant as Shaq makes my life a lot easier as a coach, but the whole team was clicking on all cylinders tonight; especially when you consider it was our first game of the season. Dennis did some real good things and he already looks like he has a much more comfortable feel for the game," commented Thunder head coach Billy Donovan in the post game press conference.

While no match for the firepower of the Thunder, the Jazz have a superstar of their own in Giannis Antetokounmpo, and he lived up to that billing in the loss. The Greek Freak scored 24 points, 13 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, and blocked 3 shots. Jabari Parker was second on the team in scoring with 18 points and Brandan Wright scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Shaq opened the season with a bang, going for 26 points and 23 rebounds.

Paul George chipped in with 21 points for the Thunder.

Dennis Smith Jr. double-doubled with 15 points and 10 assists.

The Greek Freak's 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists weren't enough for the overpowered Jazz.

Thunder Ride 4th Quarter Comeback to Win

October 26, 2018

Portland, OR -- Two of the game's biggest titans squared off in Portland, as Shaquille O'Neal and the Thunder rallied from 14 down in the 4th quarter to topple Wilt Chamberlain and the Portland Trail Blazers. Shaquille O'Neal scored 16 of 26 points in the fourth quarter, including 7 points in the final minute, as the Thunder pulled off a narrow 122-118 win.

Both teams traded a series a buckets in the final 60 seconds, but it was a clutch defensive play by O'Neal that sealed the deal. After Dennis Smith Jr. hit a diving Shaq on the previous Thunder offensive possession for a two-handed slam to put the Thunder up by one with 27 seconds left, Shaq viciously swatted a Chamberlain hook shot to Paul George with 14 seconds remaining. George was immediately fouled, hit a pair of free-throws to put the Thunder ahead 121-118, and after a Gordon Hayward three-point attempt clanged off the rim, the Thunder comeback was complete.

Shaq and Wilt lived up to the hype of their headline billing. O'Neal scored 26 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and swatted 5 shots on 8/13 shooting. Chamberlain scored 23 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, dished out 7 assists, and blocked 5 shots on 10/17 shooting.

For the Thunder, Paul George scored 25 points and grabbed 5 boards, and Dennis Smith Jr. notched his second double-double in as many games with 21 points and 10 assists to go along with 4 rebounds.

For the Blazers, Gordon Hayward scored 17 points and Spence Dinwiddie did a little bit of everything off the Portland bench with 16 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Shaq swats Wilt Chamberlain's shot attempt in the final seconds to seal the win for the Thunder.

Wilt Chamberlain posted an impressive stat line but it wasn't enough as the Blazers blew a 14-point 4th quarter lead.

Paul George scored 25 points and hit two clutch FTs in the OKC victory.

Re: Thunder and Hornets: Dual Fantasy Draft MyLeague

Hornets Get Hot, Win Three Straight

Sure, two of the three teams in the Hornets 3-game mini-win-streak are a combined 0-10, but it could be just what a very young, very promising team needs to get off to a good start and erase the bitter taste of last season's 21-61 record. Bad competition aside, the Hornets won three straight in convincing fashion. The first win was a 117-78, 39-point thrashing of Anthony Davis and the Indiana Pacers. The second win was another steamroll-job, 103-78, over the Greek Freak and the Jazz. And win number three

Joel Embiid outdueled Anthony Davis with a 30 point, 15 rebound performance in the Hornets first win of the season.

Re: Thunder and Hornets: Dual Fantasy Draft MyLeague

Thunder Continue to Cruise; Crush Lakers 125-106

October 31, 2018

Los Angeles, CA -- If the first week of the season is any indication of the future, then every team in the NBA should be terrified of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Led by All-NBA big man Shaquille O'Neal, the Thunder are off to a blistering 5-0 start and their average margin of victory has been 14.6 points. While Shaq and Paul George have given the Thunder exactly what the team expects from their superstars, it's been the ascension of second year point-guard Dennis Smith Jr. that is making the difference thus far.

And in their most recent win against the Los Angeles Lakers, Smith Jr., who drew some comparisons to Russell Westbrook after he was drafted, put on a Westbrookian performance with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists. Shaq led the Thunder with 42 points, 19 rebounds, and 6 blocks, but the young point-guard's performance is what the media was abuzz about after the game.

"Dennis is a very talented young player who has the potential to be very special," commented Thunder head coach Billy Donovan after the game. "What he did tonight...not many guys in our league are capable of controlling a game like that, by getting by his man and to the rim at will by using their explosiveness and athleticism."

Paul George was the complimentary third piece in OKC's seemingly new-found "Big 3" with 19 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. No other Thunder player scored in double-digits, but all three of Dario Saric, Jeremy Lin, and Ed Davis contributed 8-points apiece.

On the losing side, LeBron James had an eye-popping performance with 36 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Victor Oladipo helped with 20 points and 6 assists. Isaiah Thomas was able to contribute 15 points and 7 assists.

Dennis Smith Jr. just missed a triple-double with his 28 point, 9 rebound, 9 assist performance.

LeBron James did LeBron James-like things with 36 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Thunder.

Shaquille O'Neal continued his domination with 42 points, 19 rebounds, and 6 blocks.

Re: Thunder and Hornets: Dual Fantasy Draft MyLeague

Spurs top Hornets Behind Bird's 30 Points

San Antonio, TX -- The Hornets young guns just couldn't quite keep up with the defending Western Conference champs despite a valiant effort. Larry Bird scored 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 8 assists in the Spurs 124-118 win. Blake Griffin added 22 points and several jawdropping slams. Darren Collison scored 20 points and Jonas Valanciunas added a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double for the Spurs.

Joel Embiid continued his brilliant season with yet another double-double (22 points, 13 rebounds). In all, seven Hornets scored double figures: Embiid 22 points, Luca Doncic 18 points, Jayson Tatum 14 points, De'Aaron Fox 14 points, Lauri Markkanen 13 points, James Ennis 13 points, and T.J. Leaf 10 points. However, the balanced attack wasn't enough to keep up with the Spurs star power.
