3 Things You Need To Know @ LA Clippers | Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Lakers at Clippers: 3 Things You Need To Know (10/22/19)

Here is what you need to know before the Los Angeles Lakers open the 2019-20 season against the LA Clippers.

  1. It's time for the Bron-AD Era to officially begin

The Lakers enter the new season without a doubt the most dangerous duo in the NBA, as LeBron James and Anthony Davis are ready for their official debut as teammates.

Their firepower is at a level that is rarely seen in the NBA. James (27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 8.3 assists last season) can do just about anything when he wants to on the basketball court. Davis (25.9 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.4 blocks) plays with a blend of athleticism and ferocity that can't be matched.

But beyond the volume of talent; the LeBron-AD pairing is even more lethal because of how well their individual games compliment eachother and fit together. James is one of the game's greatest ball handlers -- an unstoppable force in the paint and miraculous passer. Meanwhile, Davis is an explosion, ready to launch at the basket at a moment's notice.

Which poision will the opponents choose, we'll see.

  2. The supporting cast is also revamped

While Anthony Davis was the biggest import this summer, the Lakers' whole rotation is filled with new faces that are expected to contribute heavily in the coming campaign.

Danny Green, Avery Bradley, Quinn Cook, Jared Dudley, Troy Daniels and Dwight Howard all have shots at getting major minutes this season. How Frank Vogel uses them will be among his biggest challenges.

The most obvious addition that this group brings is shooting. Last season, the Lakers shot the NBA's second-worst 3-point percentage (33.3). Green (45.5 last year -- second-best in the entire league), Cook (40.5) and Daniels (38.1) should prevent the Lakers from repeating that same low percentage.

Plus, with Davis, Howard and JaVale McGee patrolling the post -- and Green, Bradley, Alex Caruso and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope guarding up top -- the Lakers' defense also has alot of potential.

  3. And on the other side of court...

All of basketball will be centered around Los Angeles, as the Lakers and Clippers are expected to battle for Western Conference supremacy after both added stars this offseason.

Paul George is still recovering from offseason surgery, but the Clippers still boast the services of Kawhi Leonard, who just led the Toronto Raptors to their first ever championship.

Winning the NBA Finals MVP, Leonard was monstrous in defeating the Warriors, averaging 28.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in the series. Leonard, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year will look to continue his tear in Los Angeles.

Besides dealing with Leonard's individual dominance, the Lakers will also have to compete with three-time Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams, defensive ace Patrick Beverley and rim-rattling big Montrezl Harrell.

Injury Report
Lakers: Alex Caruso (pelvic bone contusion) is probable. Rajon Rondo (sore right calf) is questionable. Kyle Kuzma (stress reaction, left ankle), Talen Horton-Tucker (stress reaction, right foot) and DeMarcus Cousins (rehabilitation, right knee) are out.
Clippers: Paul George (shoulders), Rodney McGruder (ankle) and Amir Coffey (ankle) are out.

Game Notes
The LA Clippers play host to the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center on Tuesday. The Lakers made a big splash by signing LeBron James last season and the puzzle pieces are finally falling into place. While they missed the playoffs last year, they made some huge additions this offseason. Most notably, that of Anthony Davis. The superstar big man was demanding a trade from the Pelicans for the majority of last season and he finally got his wish by landing with the Lakers. Los Angeles had to give up quite the haul though, sending Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart to New Orleans. The good news is that they got to keep Kyle Kuzma and even saved up some money for other players. The Lakers signed guys like Avery Bradley, Danny Green and Dwight Howard, as those veterans are expected to give this team depth and a much needed defensive presence. This is probably the greatest Lakers roster since the Kobe Bryant era and fans can't wait to see what they do this season. The Clippers made an even bigger splash than the Lakers this offseason, as they're likely the most improved team in the NBA. Adding Kawhi Leonard would have been impressive enough but pulling off a Paul George trade minutes after that signing was a true bombshell on the league. That's two of the best wings in the league and it makes this team one of the favorites for an NBA title. Where it really makes them scary is on the defensive end, with those wings pairing up with Patrick Beverley. That's three of the best defensive players in the league and it's going to drive opponents batty all season long. Unfortunately, George is expected to miss some time at the beginning of the season. The superstar small forward has been dealing with shoulder issues throughout his career and the Clippers don't want to send him out there until he's 100 percent healthy. That means he'll be out the first 10 games or so and it will be on Leonard to run the show in his absence. The funny thing about these matchups is the fact that homecourt really doesn't matter. They both play at Staples Center and that was clear when the road team won all four meetings between these clubs last season. Prior to that, the Clippers won 17 of their previous 18 games over the Lakers.

LA Clippers 104, Los Angeles Lakers 96 | Tuesday, October 22, 2019

Leonard leads Clippers over LeBron and Lakers 104-96

LOS ANGELES - Kawhi Leonard hit five straight shots in one stretch during the fourth quarter, creating a run for the Clippers that his new teammates quickly joined in.

"That's just a gret sign of leadership," coach Doc Rivers said. "He lets his game do the talking."

Leonard began the new chapter in his career Tuesday night, scoring 22 points to go with a very strong and dominating bench effort in a 104-96 victory over LeBron James and the Lakers in the teams' season opener.

Leonard chose the Clippers because he wanted to come home and his family was on hand.

"All these emotions just went right through me again," he said.

Lou Williams added a team high 25 points and Montrezl Harrell had 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench when the Clippers began their 50th season overall and 36th in Los Angeles as the once unlikely but now favorites to win the franchise's first NBA champioship.

"It's just one of 82 (games)," Rivers said. "Next question."

Leonard won his second NBA title last season in Toronto.

The Lakers showed off their new 1-2 punch of James and Anthony Davis. Davis scored a game high 35 points, making 15 of 26 field goals, and James had 28.

"For us, we're both aggressive," Davis said. "Sometimes we kind of miss each other. I missed him a couple of times and he missed me, so just trying to figure it out." The 35 points by Davis was the highest-scoring debut by a Laker in franchise history.

Leonard got it done without his personal recruit Paul Greorge, who is sidelined indefinitely while rehabbing from a pair of offseason shoulder surgeries.

"It's just the first game of the season, so it's going to take the season and mistakes and success to get us on the same page," Leonard said.

Wearing a bow tie along with a black tuxedo jacket, George received a mixed reaction when introduced in the playoff-like atmosphere at Staples Center, where the Clippers were the home team for the first of four meetings in the arena the teams both call home.

"Their fans were very loud early and I thought our fans took over from that point on," Rivers said. "I think it's great for the city."

The Clippers' reserves outscored the Lakers bench 48-11. Last season, Williams and Harrell were the NBA's highest-scoring reserve duo, and they picked up where they left off.

"This bench is going to be better this year that they even were last year," Rivers said.

It came down to the fourth quarter, and the Clippers dominated.

Tied 92-all, they quickly went on a 9-0 run to go up 101-92 win just over a minute to go in the game.

James had three of the Lakers' five turnovers in the fourth, when Harkless and Harrell each blocked shots by Dwight Howard.

"That was just very careless and they made sure they capitalized off of it," James said.

With 1 1/2 minutes left, Lakers fans chanted "Let's go, Lakers! Let's go, Lakers!" while others hit the exits.

"The NBA's back and everyone's trying to have the narrative of it's a rivalry game and it's a huge test," James said, "but I think both teams are not where they want to be. We have a lot of room to improve on."

The Lakers erased a 10-point deficit in the second, led by LeBron James.

The Clippers outscored the Lakers 36-26 in the fourth quarter.

The rivalry was on early with a male fan shouting "Go Lakers!" during the national anthem, drawing big cheers while Clipper fans booed.

"It was everything I expected," Davis said. "Very anticipated game and it was fun."

TIP-INS

Lakers: They fell to 43-29 all-time in season openers. ... G Rajon Rondo (sore right calf) sat out.

Clippers: They improved to 25-25 in openers all-time, but still trail the Lakers 3-2 when the teams meet in a season opener. ... G Rodney McGruder (right ankle sprain) missed the game.

UP NEXT

3 Things You Need To Know vs. Utah Jazz | Friday, October 25, 2019

Lakers vs Jazz: 3 Things You Need To Know (10/25/19)

Here is what you need to know before the Lakers' home opener against the Utah Jazz.

  1. Welcome home, AD

Sure, the season opener was played at STAPLES Center, but this will be Anthony Davis' first true home game. His first time playing regular-season basketball on the Lakers court, under the Lakers lights, in front of 18,997 screaming Lakers fans.

Davis put up numbers in his debut, dropping 35 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in Tuesday's loss against the LA Clippers. While his offensive game is predicated largely on pick-and-rolls and put-backs, Davis was a monster in the post for game one.

He used his length and strength to get what he wanted down low, and put on a bit of a show with his footwork.

  2. Don't Forget Danny

For as impressiviely as Davis performed, teammate Danny Green was another one who made some noise in his first game wearing gold.

Green scored 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from the 3-point line.

The two-time champion simply did his thing, splashing three 3-pointers in the second half, while also providing strong defense throughout the night. Now he'll look to continue his long-range threat after finishing second in the entire NBA in 3-point percentage last season.

  3. Utah is reloaded

After back-to-back seasons as the Western Conference's fifth seed, the Jazz are hungry for something more. So this summer they went out and acquired two key talents: Mike Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic.

Now, Conley shot an unsightly 1-of-8 in his Utah debut and Bogdanovic is questionable for this game. But both are capable scorers, and Conley is a veteran, two-way playmaker.

And it's not like Utah didn't already have some formidable players. 7-foot-1 Rudy Gobert isn't slowing down after back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year seasons. And Donovan Mitchell gets better by the day, as he dropped 32 points and 7 rebounds in the Jazz's season-opening win over Oklahoma City.

Injury Report
Lakers: Rajon Rondo (sore right calf) is questionable. Kyle Kuzma (stress reaction, left ankle), Talen Horton-Tucker (stress reaction, right foot) and DeMarcus Cousins (rehabilitation, right knee) are out.
Jazz: Bojan Bogdanovic (left ankle sprain) is questionable. Dante Exum (knee) is out.
