CAMPBELL FIGHTING CAMELS Schedule Date Opponent Record RPI Result Score Record -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11/12/67 South Carolina State 1-4 387 W 87-78 1-0 11/17/67 at Mercer 2-3 81 W 88-86 2-0 11/24/67 North Alabama 2-4 293 W 85-67 3-0 11/29/67 at South Carolina 6-2 108 L 85-62 3-1 Game 2 at Mercer Bears This game was a number of firsts for Charlie Pinchuk. First road game (and win) and first overtime game (and win). We trailed all the way until the 8:14 mark when we finally tied it up at 66. We survived to force OT, and then both teams stumbled around dealing with fatigue and foul issues. But we managed to outscore them 6-4 in the extra period and got the win. Sophomore Matt Taylor had a breakout game with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and when you add him with our three post upperclassmen, we've really got a lot of guys who can score the ball down low. Freshman Barker has been aggressive and has been getting to the line regularly and we'll need every point we can get from the perimeter this season. Game 3 vs North Alabama Lions Our frontcourt dominated, with our usual 4 (Malliard, Washington, Sueing and Taylor) combining for 56 of our 85 points. Another freshman Cardaci grabbed a double double, with 12 and 10. As a junior and senior, I think Cardaci will be a very productive guard. 56% from the field is tough to beat. Code:

Their starting point guard and shooting guard and as well as the first guard off the bench Djoko, just tore us to shreds. Offensively and defensively. At several points in the game we had three freshman trying to battle their three seniors, and it didn't work out well. Charlie Pinchuk will get to that level at some point. Reserve post Matt Taylor went down with a minor injury, but he will miss the next game. Code:

We go 1-2, losing our two contests on the road and winning handily at home. For this first season, I think our recipe for success will be pretty darn simple. If we go against a team that has some weak post players or lacks depth, we'll find some success. If we go against teams that can match up with our posts, our guards are too weak to find much success.
We desperately need Townsend to stay out of foul trouble, which is something he's struggled with. When he has to come out of the game for any prolonged period of time, our whole perimeter rotation falls apart and we're forced to play freshman at point, and neither of them are really point guards. The Eagles had their own big man in Jeff Jimenez who gave us issues. Malliard going 5-10 from the line didn't help much either. Matt Taylor missed this game due to injury. Right now the routine seems to be that one of our freshman guards (Cardaci, Barker, Ingram) will have a solid game while the other two really struggle. If we could just get a few of them playing consistently it would make a big difference. Code:

Townsend and Cardaci were great, while Sueing continues to play very well off the bench, with 17 points and 9 boards in just 20 minutes. Washington had an inefficient 17 points, but I'll take the 9 boards and 2 assists that come with it. We're playing a very high pace right now, trying to maximize post possessions for our big guys. I keep looking at Hall's ugly numbers in the starting lineup and think about taking him out of the lineup. He's shooting 31% from the field and is 2-15 from three. But, besides starting Barker over him, I just don't have any real options. And he's easily the best wing defender we have, so he'll stay in the lineup for now. Code:

A 1-3 performance, with the entire slate being on the road. We do manage to pick up one win, at least, over Miami Ohio, but we take it in the chin for the most part in the other games. Washington and Malliard are still playing well and are very productive post starters. Townsend is playing well, and shooting the lights out (51.3% from three), but I don't expect it to last.
Given our limitations on the perimeter, this team likely isn't going to go far. I think a .500 conference record is a good goal to aim for. We did get two commitments that I'm really excited about and will be detailed below. Code:

A.J. Martinez, 6'1", 198, Kenly, North Carolina, 3*, #553 19.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.5 apg, 37.6% 3PT Undersized a little bit for a true shooting guard, but he looks like he's a legit marksman from out there. Plays decent defense given his size limitations since he's a very good athlete. Doesn't handle the ball well, or really attack the basket much right now, but his athleticism and his jump shot will get him in the rotation next year. Cody Sharp, 6'3", 191, Icard, North Carolina, 3*, #455 14.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 9.6 apg A real, legit point guard. The passing numbers speak for themselves, the question is if any of the other skills will reach an average level. He can at least hit a three, and his defense isn't embarrassing. But, if he develops right, his elite passing will get him in the lineup very quickly, regardless of how well his secondary skills pan out. I think we've gotten two future starters at Campbell. Game 8 at La Salle Explorers
La Salle has a guard named Rob Segu, who is a three point machine, 20+ points a game, and more than 8 rebounds a game as well. Our offense played well, but we could not keep up with Segu and company. Code:

Obviously tough to win when a guy goes for 40 like Minaya did for The Citadel. His 13 point average drops by more than 2 if you take out his 40 point explosion. We really shoot a crazy amount of free throws. Our 26 a game puts us at 13th in the nation. We'll see if we stay there all year or if it is just statistical noise. Code:

None of our guards were hitting shots. Just 6-25 from the field for our perimeter guys, (and 0-6 from three) and despite decent games from Mailliard and Washington, we just couldn't put up enough points and waste a very nice defensive performance.
