Armchair qb 3: AutumnWind vs GRUNT

AutumnWind vs GRUNT

OFFENSE

AW is a smart tough player. Ken Stabler has mobility and a strong arm and Biletnikoff is a beast on the outside. My goal was to avoid the big play with Barry but AW was able to get big plays from his generic running back and his bronze wide receiver. He was able to run really effective with his generic running back by pulling guards and setting up his blocks really well.

AW moved Biletnikoff around pretty well to keep me honest but mostly Biletnikoff was on the right side of the formation. Stabler continue a few drives with his scrambling ability. He also ran Biletnikoff in a twin formation which I found difficult to defend.

The drops by his receivers really hurt him in this game. Biletnikoff ran a post corner/corner route and he bobbled and dropped the ball. A really big play in he game. AW was in the game until the last minutes in the game.

DEFENSE

AW runs a press cover 2 man defense. He ran some zones but I think his personnel strengths lead to move press man coverage. There was one manual blitz that I should have picked up but I failed and took a big sack.

Anytime I see anyone controlling a player in the box I am going to try to account for the player to attack the pocket.

SPECIAL TEAMS

I think he used Tatum to run back kicks.

SUMMARY

AW is a really smart sim player and expect tough games.

Rocky vs GRUNT ARMCHAIR 3

OFFENSE

Think of Air Coryell, Greatest Show on Turf, the 2008 Pats. This is the offense you will have to stop if you play Rocky in Armchair 3

This is my James Lofton story. Mr. Lofton averaged over 20 yards per catch in his career. He is one of the greatest deep ball wide receiver in the history. So why and how did I get lulled into coverage that gave up 2 deep balls against Mr. Vertical.

I blame it all on the Eskimo. See Warren Moon could make all the throws. He picked my defense apart with underneath routes, short hitches, outs, posts, kitchen sinks, etc. I didn’t have any answer in the first drive. I also lost Greg Lloyd for 5 games in the first series. I played a loose zone during the first series trying to keep Lofton and company in front of me but by the 2nd drive I lost my patience and it was bombs away. I started playing 3-2 and 3/3 trying to get some pressure from my linebackers but Tony Nathan was picking up good yardage against those defensive fronts. I have to go back to my nickel and dime formations to contain Tony running.

I gave up three big passing plays 2 to Lofton and 1 to Herman Moore. He is more than willing to max protect and take his shot down the field. His team is built around the passing game. He is a big bomb waiting to happen but is more than willing to throw the underneath routes. By the fourth quarter after dealing with the loss of Greg Lloyd, I started to use man/zone combo with my legend safeties playing over the top. I was able to stop 2 drives but too little too late.

DEFENSE

He plays a cover 2 with mostly generic players. He plays good solid defense but its pretty vanilla. Don’t expect tons of blitzes.

SUMMARY

This team reminds me of the 80’s Chargers team. This is clearly one of the most explosive offensive teams I ever played in this game. You have to pick your poison and stay discipline.

Defense is cover 2 with mostly generic players. I wouldn’t be surprise if he leads the league in scoring and in points given up.

Great sim player and back to the lab for me to figure out how to stop Moon/Lofton connection.

Armchair qb3: Doc Holliday vs GRUNT

GAME NOTES

OFFENSE

Passing game

Steve Young is very effective and makes tons of plays with both his feet and arm. Opponents may need a spy a defender Joe to keep him from turning up field and extending drives. The Gold quarterback seems to make bronze receivers play more like silvers.

He will use multiple receivers’ formations and will line up his silver tight end in various places from a slot to the outside wide receiver in a trip set.

The mobility of Steve is a beast during the play action roll out. This play really extends the play and destroys zone integrity. He completed all his pa roll outs and he went 12 for 13 in the game. Joe ran a pa roll out and called a blitz with Eric turner. Turner came free but at the last moment reacted to the pa and Steve was free to extend the roll out completed the pass. I would use more zone blitz concepts to try to keep Joe in the pocket.

To be successful you must stop Steve mobility. Use various stunts and blitzes to keep him inside the pocket and hope for the best. I gave up a big play because my inside generic linebacker couldn’t fill the deep 1/3 of the field. Steve exploited this very poor play call. Try extending the drives as much as possible.

Running game

Natron Means is a good quick, power back. He ran off tackle with success. He gave him enough carries to keep my defense honest and also to build up the work horse attributes and became more successful in the 2nd half. I should have kept better contain to prevent those off tackle runs. I move my de just outside the tackle so my de plays contain much better.

DEFENSE

He likes to slant his de towards your guard and get amazing amount of pressure with his front 4. I should have slanted my offensive line and ran the ball more…duh with OJ. He seems to be a cover 2 guy and he sometimes manually blitzes with gold lb between the center guard and drop his de into coverage.

Special Teams

Barney is his returner for punt and kick returners

OUTCOME

The better team won 13-26. Good luck with the rest of the season. Doc is a great sim player that will keep you on your toes.
Peace.
